Inspector General: Gov't Partner Paid $500 Per Gallon of Gas in Afghanistan | The Weekly Standard

A recent report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) recalls the 1980s stories of $640 toilet seats and $500 hammers. In a report primarily addressing the construction of a hospital in Afghanistan that is two years behind schedule, SIGAR also found some egregious examples of overpayments to contractors, including one instance where USAid reimbursed a $300,000 charge for 600 gallons of diesel fuel, or $500/gallon:

In one instance, SIGAR found that IOM [International Organization for Migration] paid the contractor $300,000 for 600 gallons of diesel fuel—a cost of $500 per gallon
. According to IOM officials, the market price in Afghanistan for diesel fuel should not exceed $5.00 per gallon. As a result, with a proper invoice, the fuel charge should not have exceeded $3,000. In another instance, IOM paid $220,000 for an automatic temperature control device that should have cost between $2,000 and$10,000. IOM could not provide us with a vendor invoice for either of these payments. USAID did not discover the overpayments and reimbursed IOM for these unwarranted costs.

In response to the SIGAR report, USAid stated its intention to conduct a financial audit and recover these and any other overpayments

^contractors are paid somewhat decent (can never be enough when in a war zone though and one where we don't belong)- we were offered 5x salary and that's tax free if 330/365 days spent there, though unless they mercs or with a contracted security like Blackwater aka Xe now Academi contractors are unarmed- armed contractors are held to even a higher standard and bigger microscope than military personnel. Military still doesn't get paid shit tho and they on the front lines 24/7. At the end of the day corporations getting rich from everyday peoples blood being spilled and they want to give us peanuts in return. A mother or father cannot be replaced.

years ago i thought about doing the whole contractor thing over in iraq, they needed mechanics and the pay was awesome...all tax free also...however the catch was...you might be fixing vehicles like the one that stalled out in that video on the fly during a combat situation...with no firearm ....the survival rate seemed fairly low so i passed on that idea...good thing i did because thats when they were taking hostages and beheading people over shooting them quickly

When I got out of the military my old chief who retired from active duty was trying to get me to work for him as a govt contractor in Iraq. He said I would have gotten paid like 90k a year. Sometime I wish I took that shit but I also could have been killed out there.

contractors for the military get overpaid even if they aren't working in a hazardous environment. my cousin does concrete and he got paid double his regular wage while working a job on an airforce base, then when there's OT it's just ridiculous

same thing with my gf's brother in law. he's more of an office type/admin, but he's bringing 6 figures home, untaxed.

A military base, while much safer than a warzone, is always a potential target, I've been on one when some shit went down and I wasn't getting more than my regular salary. Granted I've been in the streets a number of times when some shit went down, tho that is 180 degrees different.

lol @ the drive of the stalled convoy

"im fixin ta get killt GATDAMMIT!"
When I first seen that video a few years ago it had onscreen commentary, I cant find that one tho...

I dont know how true the commentary was but it said somthin about the Humvee in the front was a national guard unit.....they never returned fire.....and at the 2:50 mark when the truck in front of the humvee got blasted on its side(IED??), it stopped the convoy.....dudes truck stalled out....the national guard unit bailed first.....then it became an every man for himself type situation.

Fuck that shit. I dont like money that damn much.

is there any truth to the rumor i heard that if you do die than you get nothing

i remember seeing this movie called buried and dude was basically a contractor and the corporation he was working for cut him off once he was kidnapped..no benefits, no money, nothing for his family...sure its a movi, but i've always wondered if they would be shady like that
