i dunno but after seein a pac is overated, and scarface the movie is overated thread, i jus had to start this up. am i gettin too old cause i think pac is tha greatest and i think scarface is a classic. it jus seems to me that if u grew up in my time (im 30) then u would appreciate these. thats like sayin E.T. isn't a classic cuz tha special efx isnt' that good. i don't want this to be a pac thread, or even a scarface thread, i jus wanna know if the older cats are feelin me. i'm feelin like my dad when i was young talkin bout, "oh, yall don't kno music these days, this is real music," (then puttin on some earth, wind, and fire). i feel like i'm doin this now with rap, oh yall don't kno REAL rap these days, (put in some 2pac). it jus seems like youngstas nowadays dont respect shit. growin up, i never said shit like marvin gaye is overated. now young peeps are sayin shit like pac overated, i dont know, ya'll feel me tho? fold.

i feel you to a certain extent...but its not like these are 15-16 year old kids saying pac and scarface overrated, the majority are probably in their twenties and are old enough to form their own opinion on things...thats all it is when it comes down to,just a difference of opinion, dont think age has much to do with it...when you dad told you about real music he was probably 30 something and you were like 14,big difference between that and being 30 and tellin somebody thats 22.like i said i do agree that young cats do lack a lot of apreciation for good music, but just like you said, our generation was the same way,its always going to be that way...it all comes full circle eventually,in the same way i listen to all the stuff my parents listened to these days (like your EW&F example) these kids will do the same...they might not have the apreciation now but they will come around...good music will always resurface

Yes you're too old.

Does liking Pac & Scarface make you too old? No

Most of the people in that Scarface thread that said it was over rated were "old". I'd guess the average age was well over 21. It's just an honest appraisal when you compare the movie to other movies in the genre, let alone a list of classic films or even other films by the director.

Seeing Pac get an overrating comes as this site gets more popular with people outside the "traditional" westcoast listenership who place different emphasis on a variety of qualities they expect in their music. (and a growing hatred for the type of self-barnumization perfected by Pac).

YESSIR....these cats on here haven't even seen MTV Raps... it's sad mane...I feel bad for them because they grow up on 50, 'lil Jon, Chingy, Nelly etc...they don't even appreciate how lucky they have it....hip-hop is pretty much mainstream nowadays. you had to be a true head to have hip-hop records because if you went into tower & asked for T LA Rock...they looked @ you stupid and walk the other way. they have NEVER experienced a culture being born like we have....from conception, to birth and all of the phases since...music is DEFINATELY stale at the moment...TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON IMAGE & NOT SKILLS...where's the DJ at??? More ROCK groups have DJs than "hip hop" acts do...
"What ever happened to the DJ cut? / No corny ass hooks, 'jus scratchin' it up / What the fuck??!!
I really miss those days / When we left we was "Audi" / Fila boots were suede / No Fades / 'Jus comb your hair back / Derby coats, Herringbones & China Flats / No gats / We knuckle up & throw down / 4 6X9s in the back, had the 'lark on pound..."
...sorry had to let that out...I feel HELLA old because shit I used to sport in Jr High, is RETRO gear now,,,what the feezy?? Fuckin' wrestlers & actors I used to watch as a kid, are fuckin' governors...GOVERNORS...shit, I would have voted for Superfly Snuka or Al Pacino if THEY would have ran...Scarface shook the world like Colors did...put too much game out there for those dumb asses who think movies are real life & they get to imitating that shit...they act like po-po don't go to the movies too...see all that shit YOU saw & wait for us to act up...thanks hollywood

Scarface is coo.its way over hyped in my opinion tho.my dad told me when i was little that the original black & white one is better,i still aint seen that tho.........

but i do got an apreciation for music.i just like music.my dad had me growin up on Santana all that old school funk and soul shit.that real R&B with live instruments and actualy singin.i still fuck with that old shit.my little girls be singin the old shit too.i cant fuck with this new R&B shit with the rap beats.thats for these youngsters.my mom listened to that old school soul/funk shit too,but she also listened to Fleetwood Mac,Lynyrd Skynyrd,Eric Clapton, all that classic rock shit.so i can dig all that shit.these younger cats just listen to rap.they dont wanna hear anything else.........

I think it's because alot of the younger audience weren't around to feel the impact that these artist made. Nothing about pac was fake or overstated at all. He was like the representative of the people and spoke for alot of people through his music.

Seems like kind of a phase... Like lookin' back you can see how Rock started off n had a lot of political meaning and the great guitar players like Hendrix, Santana, etc. Then look at rock in the 80's and it's mostly headbangin' shit without meaning and a lot of image and copy cat shit. Most shit comin out at the time sounded the same.

Maybe hip hop is going through a similar phase either due to corporate manipulation and distribution or other reasons, and until a new form of music comes out and brings some meaning back we'll be stuck with the same shit about how crunk i am with my 36 inch rims.

I like your line of thinking. I always wondered what would happen when I got old and my kid's didn't appreciate my music. I still think I'm gonna beat them.

Here's a little story for you though:

I work in an office building, shirt and tie, all that good shit. I'm 21 years old, relatively young, but definately not in middle school if you feel me. So, I'm driving home bumping "Feel Me Flow" by Naughty by Nature with my window down rapping at the top of my lungs not paying attention to anybody. While this is going on, there's about 20 middle school kids at the cross walk waiting to go across the street, and they're all watching me and laughing at me. Finally I turn my head and I see this little kid go "Look at that white dude tryin to act all hard". So I get pissed off, turn my radio down, stick my head out the window, and scream at this group of 20 kids "YOU KIDS DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT REAL HIP HOP!" and then I drove away. They were definately laughin at me.
