I been really getting into the San Diego rap scene of late. The last review I did was R.Beta & Macnificent "Overhated & Underrated" which I gave a 10/10. I been listening a lot to Ecay's new album, Lil CS of course, Silas aka Smigg Dirtee (one of the most underrated up-an-coming artists out there), Cricet, Mitchy Slick & more. They all got a similarity. Just like back in the days when Snoop was coming up, Tha Dogg Pound was dropping "Dogg Food," Warren G was releasing his G-Funk classic, they all had a similar style to them. A West Coast style. Gangsta-ish, G-Funk music you could pop in your lowrider and ride to. Well, in my opinion the San Diego scene is very similar. It's got its gangsta-ish style to it, West Coast San Diego music that you could pound in your lowrider while cruisin down the street.
Mackvillin is one of those artists that fit in that category. He's a San Diego rapper who's new album "Dickies-N-Chuck Taylors" is creating quite a buzz on the streets. The album was produced completely by Mackvillin and Ecay Uno (with the exception of ne song). Guest appearances are by Ecay Uno, Lil CS, Slias aka Smigg Dirtee, I-Rocc, Cee Wee 3, Mr. Shadow, Cuzzin Ice Lecta, Illicit & more.
As soon as i popped in the cd and heard the intro I knew this was gonna be a good album. It's hilarious. Mackvillin breaks into some dudes house and lays a beating on him.
Next is the track "Dickies-N-Chuck Taylors" featuring Ecay Uno & Illicit. Ecay hooks up a sicc beat, I mean this shit bumps nicely. Ecay drops a phat hook while Mackvillin and Illicit drop tight verses. Definately a banger. But I'm feeling "Dickies-N-Chuck Taylors Part II" even more. This version features Ecay Uno, Illicit, Silas aka Smigg Dirtee, Lil CS, Cuzzin Ice Lecta, I-Rocc, Cee Wee 3 & LC Janet. Every single verse on this track is hott. Same Ecay Uno beat, just more heat.
"1 Foot In The Grave, 1 Foot In The Gutter" is another of the tight tracks on this album. it features Cee Wee 3 & Lil CS. Ecay Uno did the beat. Lil CS comes hard on this track. Harder than usual in my opinion. Mackvillin dropped a tight verse on the track and Cee Wee 3 finished it off and did the hook. I didn't like this track at first but the more I listened to it the more it grew on me. Now it's one of my favourites on the album.
"Knock'n" is exactly that, Knock'n! Mackvillin laced the beat and put it down on the mic. He spits that gangsta shit on this one and shows folx he's not to be taken lightly in this game. The same thing on "Ride'n." He spits that gangsta shit and is again solid on the mic. Ecay Uno provided the beat for this track.
"Southeast Life" features Ecay Uno and is produced by Ecay Uno. A tight beat is laced and with these two monsters on the mic, ya know they gonna smash on it. A sicc track to say the least.
"Loop Loop" I haven't made my mind up about yet. At first, this was probably my least favourite track on the album. And actually it still is. But I really didn't like this track at all at first but recently, it's been growing on me. Ecay Uno drops the beat while Mackvillin lays down the vocals. The hook was annoying to me at first but now I'm getting into it.
"Be A Victim" featuring I-Rocc is the only track on the album that is produced by someone other than Mackvillin or Ecay Uno. Homebeezy produced this one. It's got a gangsta-feel to it. Mackvillin and I-Rocc both spit tight. I-Rocc rips the hook on this one.
Other sicc junts on this album are "California" feat. Illicit. Another Ecay laced heater with Mack spittin his usual fire. "Steady Hate'n" featuring Mr. Shadow & Illicit. Once again Ecay laced the beat and all the artists spit gems. "Hoodratz" produced by Mackvillin is another track I'm feeling to the fullest. The beat's got a funky kinda feel to it and fits the hook nicely. Mack drops heat on the mic as usual. Really, I'm feelin pretty much the entire album.
If you haven't heard of Mackvillin yet, don't trip, you will. He just signed a distribution deal with R.N.D. Distribution and this album will be re-released this month. So, there shouldn't be any excuses why folx ain't copped this one yet. It's a West Coast album with a West Coast feel to it. Mackvillin & Ecay Uno produced the entire album with the exception of one track so you know the beats are gonna be hard. Mackvillin spits smooth, tight lyrics throughout the album and the features are hott. There's not much else to say. Buy it and bump it.
10/10
