LOS ANGELES A pedestrian was killed today when a vehicle being followed by police in South Los Angeles struck her and crashed into another vehicle, which caught fire, authorities said.
The accident at Vernon Avenue and Broadway occurred about 10:40 a.m.,
said Officer Ana Aguirre of the Los Angeles Police Department. Paramedics took the woman to a hospital, where she died, said Ron Myers of the Los Angeles Fire Department. Her name was withheld, pending notification of her next of kin.
The suspect, whose name was withheld, was arrested at the scene, Aguirre said. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries, Myers said.
Two officers in a black-and-white patrol car were following the motorist
-- why was not revealed -- at the time of the accident, Aguirre said. The
officers breathed some smoke while searching for possible victims in the
vehicle that caught fire, Myers said. No one in that vehicle was hurt.
