LOS ANGELES (AP) - Fans who gathered to pay their respects to singer Adan Sanchez grew rowdy Thursday when a viewing of his body ended early, leaving thousands disappointed.
The crowd swarmed the streets of Norwalk, a suburb 15 miles southeast of Los Angeles, knocking over portable toilets, throwing rocks at sheriff's deputies and rocking cars trapped in intersections.
Officials had not expected so many people to show up for the viewing at St. John of God Church, officials said. Sanchez, 19, died last week in a car crash in Mexico.
``The crowd started at about 500 people at about 11 or 12 a.m., and from that to this evening it was up to about 10,000 people,'' said Sgt. Angela Shepherd of the Los Angeles County sheriff's department.
Church officials were forced to end the event about 90 minutes early because of the crowd's size.
As a hearse took Sanchez's body away, hundreds of mourners threw flowers and reached out to touch the car's windows. A handful of people jumped on its back bumper, falling off as the hearse picked up speed.
Television footage later showed people blocking traffic and trying to tip over passing cars.
Shepherd said 300 officers were trying to disperse the crowd. There were no arrests, she said.
Sanchez, son of narco-ballad singer Marcelino ``Chalino'' Sanchez, died March 27 in a car accident in northwestern Mexico.
Sanchez had recorded nine commercial music CDs that included romantic ballads and tributes to his father. He had a large listening audience in Mexico and the United States.
