Actions and Reactions

“Ten percent of life is what happens to you and 90 percent is how you react”
-Irving Berlin

Anyone who has worked in entertainment for more then a few days knows that with all of the ups and downs involved it can seem more like a roller coaster then a business. The true test though is how you react to the things that happen to you. When Diddy was fired from his position at Uptown Records he could have taken the easy road and quit but instead he built the Bad Boy Empire which today has a stranglehold on music, marketing, clothing, and television. On the flip side there's always artists who come from nothing and then when given more money then they could have ever imagined they react by wasting it on things they don't need. As a recording artist you will constantly deal with setbacks whether it’s your record getting pushed back on a major or not making enough off your last release to continue funding your independent label. When these things happen it’s your choice to either quit or hit the streets, internet and world harder then ever. With the technology we have today it’s more affordable then ever to record your own music and press your own CD’s for release in the streets. Similarly taking advantage of the internet you can upload music for your fans to exclusively listen too and keep your name alive even through the hardships. Now when I say that doing it yourself is a method that can benefit you, don’t be confused and think that I’m saying you should sacrifice quality for quantity. Your music is your brand and the minute fans feel like your not giving them the same quality music they have became accustomed too, will be the exact minute they stop checking for you. In the eight years I have been working in entertainment I have been fired, lost money, and had quite a few set backs, but with a relentless attitude and a ability to see the light at the end of the tunnel I have always been able to keep my head above water. Trust me there were many times when I first broke into the business when I was bagging groceries forty hours a week and then shooting videos on the weekends for little to no money that I was ready to quit and forget about my dreams. But at the end of the day that is what separates those of us who make it from those who don’t. There are a million aspiring artists, business people, and film makers out there, but like my peers and I always say the ones who are really in it for the long run will show it through their attitudes and abilities to react. This isn’t a business that you can take breaks from and it’s definitely not one that is forgiving to you when you allow for set backs to stop you. So in this roller coaster we call the entertainment business always remember that its not what happens to you but instead how you react to it.

It's the story of a real hustler's life... you never quit because you run into adversity. Every winner in the game has lost before. Taking losses can show you more than you will ever know. It will also show you if you are built for the game.

Good read Miles. Regaining and picking one's self up from failing, learning why a certain business fault occurred, and how to prevent it in the future and grow is what makes that person succeed. Technology and keeping up with technology is the key. If you can't keep up with technology in this day and age, your going to get left in the dust, and in the 21st century it is possible to have a successful income and business on your own, independently, you just have to go about it in the right way and the first step is to educate yourself.

Your blogs hold invaluable information Miles. Don't take this the wrong way, but you need to make paragraphs when you write something like this. That being said though, this is advice anybody in the industry should soak up and apply to their hustle. Keep them coming man.

I agree 100%! Your always keeping it positive... Yeah, the paragraph thing would be good though, because I keep losing my place when reading your posts, lol... :)
