during the 9ers game vs seattle, i saw the 9ers line up on the scrimmage, and the running back would go to the other side on an audible, but he would line up perpendicular or 90 degrees to the scrimmage line and the other offensive linemen, and the running back would be set up what looked like he was in between two of the offensive linemen. the running backs backside and frontside was facing the sidelines. his outer shoulder was facing the defense. usually the rb face is facing the defense. the rb had a sideways stance.

the running back was sorta like sideways blocking like this, |-- , where the scrimmage is the, | ,and the running back is blocking is the dotted dashes.

now, i always thought that all the offensive players were to be set up parallel to the scrimmage or at an angle, but they couldn't be totally 90 degress perpendicular to the scrimmage. sorta like | I, where the scrimmage is the, | , and the I is the offensive players.

when did the rules change, or is this something legal that teams are starting to implement into the offense? this sideways blocking scheme???

also, off topic but i am starting to see the old delay the hand off to the running back like what the buffalo bills did with thurman thomas. i think this is something that teams are using to shake it up a lil bit from the norm. the teams will pretend that the running back is in the backfield to block and then if nobody is there for the running back to block - the qb will hand it off to the running back. it's like some trickery running play, that gets yards cuz the opposing team is far down the field to come back and get the running back

im seeing this with delays in passing, where they will at the last minute, the qb will softly throw it off to the side to a running back and this will give the rb room to run with offensive linemen screening and blocking for him.

i cant remember seeing this kind of shit before that is why im asking if anybodys seen unusual or new formations and plays this year that they didnt see from years before. i know about this wildcat bullshit, but im looking for some unusual shit. ill google and see what i can find about the blocking schemes.

Delayed handoffs have always been around, more teams use them than others. And the delayed pass to the running back is called a screen and is used in every single football game. They also throw screens to receivers, but not as delayed.
