@ A-WAX XPLOSIVE MAGAZINE INTERVIEW! http://archives.xplosivemagazine.com/Issue_12/awax.html

If you want to follow a good example on how to come from nothing, and succeed, then follow A-Wax’s career. He has released now 4 solo albums and a few other affiliated projects. His thug status has earned him covers of magazines, and countless appearances on other rappers albums. His new album ‘Thug Deluxe’ is selling like crazy. Let’s see why A-Wax is climbing the charts, and collecting Gold and Platinum plaques on his way. We kicked it at my house. We did the usual, relaxing, smoking on 2 to 3 backwoods, I asked Wax, what are you working on right now? A-Wax replied, “I got the A-Wax and Woodie album. It got 2 songs with me and Woodie. Then I got 5 solos and he got 5 songs with him and a few East Co.Co. cats on it. My solos are fire, Rob Lo did all the beats-so you know it’s fire.”

Your new album is in stores now, tell everyone about it. “’Thug Deluxe’ is in stores nationwide right now. City Hall is pushing it. As a CEO, it’s on me. Put it like this, I didn’t run a barcode on my last 2 albums, my ‘Concepts & Contradictionz’ and the Baby Bash & A-Wax. But I sold records. When I was on Bayside I sold a good 5 or 6 thousand records. Then I go over here to City Hall. I’m really just trying to pump it up, keep my name buzzing. My albums are getting good enough to where I got enough substance behind them. I’m not just rapping like I used to. I’m putting messages into my music. I’m putting thought into it, putting a lot of my life into it. I’m trying to stay away from the bullsh#t. I’m trying to spark somebody’s mind, someway or some form. I’m trying to take it to another level, some real sh#t,” said A-Wax.

What else are you working on? “My new, new album is called ‘Unconditional Thug.’ I dedicated the ‘Thug Deluxe’ album to my folks E-(Ernest) who I lost. He was there when I first started my rap career. He died in a car accident up there by Seattle a couple of months ago. I did a song for him on the ‘Unconditional Thug’ album. E was somebody close to me, but I got to keep going. Everything that happens in my life, I use for inspiration in my music. I try to turn it around, turn it into messages. I take lessons in the streets too. That everyday sh#t that you can’t speak about unless you were there, or really there to understand it. I got meaning behind it. Like ‘65 G’s In A Jordan Briefcase,’ I had a goal. I just said I wanted to do a gangsta album. I like listening to Brotha Lynch, C-Bo, Spice 1, them is the dudes I grew up with them. I like the way they spit. I used to always tell myself when I was young, I wish they did an album with all the hard songs, cause I only liked bumping the gangsta sh#t. I didn’t like C-Bo’s songs for a bit@#, his party songs, I liked his gangsta sh#t. That goes for all of them. I liked them for their gangsta sh#t, not for their playa sh#t, I wasn’t into that. So I told myself, since they wasn’t gonna do a whole album the way I wanted, I’m gonna do an album with all gangsta sh#t one time. None of the bullsh#t. ‘Savage Timez,’ that was just me getting in the rap game. I got raps, I was a curb M.C., a Penitentiary M.C., I was good for 16’s. It’s not like I’m doing it now,” said A-Wax.

Isn’t ‘Savage Timez’ being re-released? “Yes, I’m putting some hot new songs on it too, just to make sure it does good. I still have hella songs recorded for the Telly Mac and A-Wax album, ‘The Hittaz Wit Spittaz’ album, it’s still coming. The ‘Unconditional Thug’ album, I got songs for the females on there. I’ve been writing some different songs for it. I’m trying to round it out,” said A-Wax. Who did the beats on it? “I got Doug Infinite, he’s from Chicago. He’s Kanye West’s mentor. He’s out here in Frisco doing his thing. I’m gonna be fu@#ing with him for a long time. Lev got some on there too. I got Happy P, who I’m trying to get back in line with. I’m gonna be on too many mixtape joints in the next year, I’m gonna bring the mixtape sh#t back. It’s not gonna be no regular sh#t. I got an all Alchemist mixtape. I’m gonna do a Wax-Fase/Nirvana mixtape. Taking a bunch of their guitar licks with some drum patterns behind it, and I’m rapping on it. If I’m gonna take somebody’s verse and put it on my mix, I’m gonna take a Curt Cobaine, or a Bob Marley, Tupac, somebody who’s not breathing right now. I just want to use their hooks, use a couple of their words out of their songs for inspiration to write my own songs. I’m doing something totally different. Everything I touch, I don’t ever rush it,except ‘Savage Timez,’ everything after that, was all properly done. Lev Berlak at the Grill mixed everything. I set the bar for myself with this ‘Thug Deluxe’ album. Lev made the beats for me. He did the whole album. The only feature on it, is The Game, he’s one of the most anticipated names in Rap, that’s huge, especially for the West Coast,” said A-Wax

I heard you got a Gold Plaque? “Yeah, I got that from being on my dog Baby Bash’s album ‘The Smokin Nephew.’ His new album is sure to go Platinum, so I will have that one too, cause I’m on his new album too,” says A-Wax. Right now, the West Coast is quiet. A-Wax plans to shake things up. Make some serious noise. Keep up with his progress, read Xplosive Magazine.
