In my opinion the absence of hi-hats makes in a rap beat makes some songs sound incomplete. This only came to mind when I heard the new Tupac track "Thugz get lonely too" produced by eminem feat. Nate Dogg. I try not to speak on other peoples shit...cause they do what they do. But I think it coulda used some type of hi-hat variation here and there or bring them in on the Nate Dogg hook then exit with the hook.....just an observation. It's cool...just sounds incomplete.

but you said it was an eminem beat my friend. and there is really no answer to give, i mean a beat with just a kick and snare is wack, but what if they put a shaker in place of a high hat, does that make the beat wack also? try being a little more specific.

Eminem's drums are BEYOND boring to me...Yet alot of cats dig em....I think on maybe the 1st couple of tracks they sounded ok but now ALL his drum tracks are the same...Or the people ACTUALLY MAKING them are doin em the same ;-)

^probably cuz he got Dres engineer twerkin em to make them sound real nice, the patterns themselves aren't nothing special but I do like alot of Ems beats.

On the subject of hi hats, yeah the absence of high hats could work it all depends on what you are trying to do with the song there are no real writtin in stone rules to making music thats what I always say.

I also said SOME songs.......also even if something else is used instead of the hi-hats....there is STILL something there occupying that space....the listener will get the same effect. Maybe I shoulda aksed it a different way.

El-P from Company Flow/Def Jux has made a lot of beats without high hats that were real tight. Check Cannibal Ox "The Cold Vein" and El-P's solo album "Fantastic Damage"

yeah sometimes I'll shorten the length of like a Guitar sample or something like that and use it as a high hat.

I've made a few beats where i just substituted the high hats with another sound, like shakers instead of hats, or some other percusssive sound It actually came out pretty tight, kind of like a beat that Keak Da Sneak would spit on.
It's good to change things up, songs don't "Have to have a certain instrument in it", experiment with everything, if you don't it's just monotonous, generic, bullshit. Real Chop

ive made only very few trax without hi hats. to me most songs need em. not all do tho. and subsitute em with shakers or sumthin does work well too. and on the Eminem beats subject... his drums are fuckin boring. flat out. he dont ever change his style of it. i think hes got a lil taent makin beats. but he needs to be more diverse and try new things. seems liek hes too scared to step out of line in a sense u kno? IMO

I've made beats with no hats or shakers that were dope.

And Eminem has plenty of tight beats. True some of them sound similar....but he has created his own sound. Dre is the same way.....you can usually tell if it's a Dre beat. Just like you can usually pick out a D-Sane beat. We all have our own styles and *signature* sounds.

If it ain't broke.....don't fix it. There's MILLIONS of people buying these cats albums who love what they're doin' and the beats they're makin'.....so your opinions are obviously in the minority.

I think Eminem makes some very musically inclined tracks, he has some talent, him and Dre collab alot, with Storch probably playing key riffs til one of them says ok thats it... they basically flip through samples, live, and pick a good sounding one, alot easier than playing yourself... Alot of rap songs these days are without hats, sometimes with out bass, because the drums sound cleaner, I think the classic 8th note hats, kick 1 and 3, snare 2 and 4 and some swing hip hop patterns are played to death... I like anytime I hear a beat where it sounds fresh, even if it lacks a bassline....or hats.....

or anything melodic in general
