Ever since Howard The Duck appeared at the end of ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ there have been rumours that the character could return for his very own origin story.
And the man who helped to bring Howard The Duck to the big screen for the heavily maligned 1986 effort - the one and only George Lucas - has figured out the perfect way to make a good adaptation of the comic-book character.
“Someday, I hope, Marvel will make a new version of Howard the Duck, and you’ll see it could be a good movie. A digital duck will make that thing work,” Lucas explained to Wired Magazine.
George Lucas worked as an executive producer on 1986’s ‘Howard The Duck’ movie, which despite starring Lea Thompson, Tim Robbins and Jeffrey Jones is widely regarded as an abject failure and the worst Marvel movie to date.
One of the biggest reasons for its poor reception was the decision to shoot it in live action rather than as an animated film, while Howard’s appearance was also labelled as laughable too.
However over the years ‘Howard The Duck’ has developed a cult following, and the film’s reputation has improved slightly. This was confirmed when Howard The Duck appeared in the post-credits sequence for ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’, where he was voiced by Seth Green and was also full CGI, and Marvel fans lapped it up in their droves
It’s still highly unlikely that Howard The Duck will fit into Marvel’s Cinematic Universe though. Especially in the next few years. But there’s still always a chance that he will make fleeting cameo appearances in future blockbusters, while Marvel has previously proven that they don’t mind taking risks with their franchises and output, and bringing Howard The Duck back to the big screen would be their biggest one to date.
