03-26) 17:31 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco police asked for the public's help Friday in solving two recent slayings in the Bayview, including the case of an 83-year-old man who died nearly two months after being kicked by teenagers while getting off a Muni bus on Third Street.
Huan Chen of San Francisco was beaten at 6:20 p.m. Jan. 24 at Third Street and Oakdale Avenue by as many as six teenagers, police said. He died March 19 at San Francisco General Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment since the attack.
"They came up from behind, knocked him down and put the boots to him, then everybody took off laughing," said Lt. Mike Stasko of the police homicide detail.
Chen was on his way to visit his wife, who was in a convalescent home nearby, Stasko said. "These guys attacked him for no reason," he said.
Investigators are looking at whether there is any connection between the attack on Chen and an incident Monday evening at Third and Oakdale, in which five teenagers grabbed a 57-year-old woman by the neck and threw her off the Muni T-line platform. She was injured but is expected to recover.
A 15-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the assault, which was recorded by a Muni surveillance camera. Footage of the attack can be seen on the Police Department's Web site, sfgov.org/police.
The boy, whose name has not been released because he is a juvenile, is not a suspect in Chen's death, Stasko said.
Police are also searching for witnesses in a second fatal attack, the March 18 shooting of Deoaunta Lyons, 28, in front of his home at 37 Commer Court. Lyons was declared brain dead the next day.
Stasko said Lyons was on a stairway with another man at 1:40 p.m. when a man walked up and opened fire with a handgun.
"It's sad that someone comes out of their house and suddenly gets killed," Stasko said. "Right now, we don't have a bunch of folks coming forward, and if anyone has any information, we would like to talk to them."
