Mixing 101 - so feel free to flame me...but

How do yuo get your 808 kick to stop distorting your bass? They share similar frequencies - so it would make sense to just cut the lo's out of your particular bass. However, this doesn't seem to work for me...still get distortion - or it weakens the bass beyond belief.

EDIT: The worst example of 808 kicks distorting with bass is Sicx's ITWCT album. One of the worst mixing jobs as far as lo's go I've ever heard.

another good example of that Nostril King would be Loaded. Listen to a song like heatas with HELLA bass and then the extra 808 bass in there. Damn, it's impossible to hear what's goin on in the song if you have a system with a lot of bass.

What I normally do for doing a track with some 808 bass under a kick, is I tend to go easy on a bassline. For instance, when the bass cuts out, then throw in the 808. You could also try compressing the 2 together in a chain. Another thing would be to try EQing the bass and 808 so that they don't share the same frequency, but if you're using a bass sound that has a lot of low end, you'll most likely end up losing that part of the bass, which might not be the sound you'd want.

What works for me is to mix the 808 about 5db quiter than my main kicks. Do a lpf on the 808 at about 35Hz and a hpf on your bass at about 35Hz as well.

The main thing is to not use a sub bass played in the lower register at the same time you use an 808. They aren't compatible. You can put the 808 kick in when there is a silent space in your bass line if you want, but you don't want them playing at the same time.

pay attention faggot. start off by getting the kick and bass to blend using your VOLUME faders FIRST. After that you should cut ALL FREQUENCIES **BELOW** 40HZ (on yuor gay ass kick and bass) as these frequencies are not needed. You can use a filter or eq just get rid of everything below 40hz. After that BOOST all low frequencies until you find the frequencies that are destroying your sound. 250-500hz range is where your problems are going to be. CUT it by 3db first. After that CUT by 6db but make SURE you dont suck too much of the low end out of it. A *multiband* compressor OR gate (yes gates can be used on bass ASSHOLE) can work wonders also.

EXPERIMENT YOU LAZZY PIECE OF SHIT AND STOP ASKING DUMB ASS QUESTIONS ON A MESSAGE BOARD. BTW MAKE SURE YOU PICK THE RIGHT EQ FOR THE JOB. I BET YOUR SORRY ASS DOESNT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A GRAPHIC OR PARAMETRIC (USE THE PARAMETRIC)....

That song you did with him was clean.. Almost reminded me of a twisted Lenny Kravitz he made..... You definitly got a different flavor Rock/Rap/Spoken word... I was choppin about the Motif with him and he said he was messin round with the ES.... Small world
