Since Best Buy is having a 4th of July sale, I'm also shopping for a tv. I'm thinking about going with a Sony or a Samsung. I've had Toshiba and Panasonic tv's before and they've all fucked up. I'm looking for something between $900-$1200. Mostly gonna use it to play my Xbox 360. I have a small room and I'm looking from a 32" to 47". I'm hoping to go with a 1080p but I heard 720p is just as good. I'm not too sure about the hz though. I know it matters when watching blu-ray and sports so i'm not sure on that part. What are some good recommendations? Have any of you bought any tv's lately? What should I look out for? Thanks in advance Siccness members.

720p is what cable and dish networks brodcast their HD channels in. 1080p is what blu-ray is shown in. 120hz is what the top of the line sony and samsung lcd tvs have. You will notice it only if you are using a 120hz monster cable. i like plasma have 2 of them but they are not recomended if you have a lot of light in your room. Also if your that person that loves to pause tv this will leave a burn mark in your screen. Also dont be fooled by the color ratios because there is no set guideline. All companys use there own scales. Lcd are better overall tvs for any size and room lighting.

1080p is only really noticeable once you get into the bigger TVs. Anything under like 37"-42" and you should be good with 720p.

LCDs are also better for gaming from what I've read.

1080. fuck 720. if someone tells you there's no difference, tell their ass to go get fuckin GLASSES. or eat the carrots instead of sittin on them. lol

i got a 50" plasma....cause i had room for it, that was an issue for me kinda, until i moved...so i got a bigger tv...lol...but....you'd be cool with a 42 i'm sure, but, i thought a 42 was ok til i got my 50".....lol....

mines got like 4-5 hdmi hook ups...and some special bullshit....but, it's just a tv.....and it does what i want....and red faction guerrilla looks fucking SICK on it......but that game also goes in 1080i and 1080p, so either way you're good.

just don't get a fucking tv with 720 if you're going to spend that kind of money. you'll see someone with 1080 who paid the same and wanna kill whoever told you 720 is "jsut as good."

you want 1080p if your going bigger than 32 inch, some 32inch models got 1080p but they are hella expensive, almost the same price as a 37 inch 1080p. you want at least 6ms of response time and at least 120hz (the new tv's got 240hz). go with a name brand becuase once you get your shit hooked up in your room you dont want to be second guessing the purchase like i wonder if i should of spend that lil bit extra to get the one i wanted.

Samsung has good LCD's. Get an LCD if you are mostly playing video games. Going with 720 will save you money. Odds of you needing the 1080 are slim to none. Save the money now, by the time you have the "need" for 1080 TV's will cost less and you'll want something different anyway.

if blu rays are broadcast on 1080 will it be all good on a 720 as well?
you tv's highest output will be accepted. say if your tv can only play video in 720p then it plays it in 720p, even if its a blu-ray movie (in 1080p). if your tv is 1080p and you only got a wii itll play it to the wii's max output which i think is 420p.

basically your tv will play anything as long as its hooked up.

1080p is extremely rare in broadcasting, as all major networks use a 60 Hz format in the MPEG-2 header – either 720p60 or 1080i60, and the consumer televisions do not support codecs needed to support 1080p50 or 1080p60 as of yet.

All Blu-ray Discs are able to hold 1080p HD content such as movies. All movies released on Blu-ray can produce a Full 1080p High Definition picture when the Blu-ray Disc Player is connected to a 1080p HDTV with a HDMI cable. However, current specification for BD-video only allows encoding of up to 1080p24 signal.

Also just because Blue-ray are able to hold 1080p does not mean the majority of the content is actually 1080.

^^^ its not that wise to get a 1080p with a 32" but if your a gamer you made the wise choice with the Samsung. I got a 720p 32" Samsung and that shit never fails to amaze me in how clean it looks playing games and watching movies and shit. Samsungs are probably underrated in watching movies and shows in HD also.
