The other side of the coin in this is, not only are many of the artist not worth the money in today's game, but with the whole free / bootleg downloading epidemic it's set for failure from the start.
Back in the early 2G's it was nothing to pay for a $1500 verse because we could run out to the street and Cd's would sell. I did it & it was all good, made my money back plus, but that's just not happening today like it was then. That all boils down to anything invested into your project. I think artist / independent labels in today's world are seriously budgeting and just like any corporation / small business is not trying to spend money that's not going to move & make a profit. There is no room for gambling in 2011 - 2012. That's why many independents no longer press a large amount of hard copies. They settle for digital downloads. It's cutting cost / budgeting. Spend a little less in hopes to make that extra money back a lot faster. It's back to the basics, it's all a test run again.
Now, along comes the artist who wants 2 to 3G's for a 16 bar measure & the artist / label paying has to really think outside the box. They have to think business, but most approach it as a fan & not care to dish out a large amount of money to someone they look up to. Thinking everybody in the world is a fan of that artist he's paying. He's not looking into that artists' current status. If the artist asking for 2 or 3G's is not selling units to match the money they're asking for, they have 10,000 hit's on youtube, but it was uploaded 4 years ago from the date you checked, their facebook artist page has a few hundred more likes than yours, their iTunes sales etc.
That's one way to check your artist current status and not just feeding into the sales pitch he's feeding you of the I, I, I... Of course just like you shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket, you wouldn't label that artist just based on that alone, but it gives you an idea of what your looking at in sales & the buzz this artist has in today's new digital world. Which is where most people are buying their music today.
