Due to so many weak rappers out right now, I don't really check out that many new ones. I stick to the good ones I know from the 90s and check out new ones when I hear some positive comments on The Siccness or rappers friends introduce to me.

The truth is that the proportion of weak rappers among independent artists is not lower than that among mainstream ones. And because there are so many independent ones, it is a sea of wack music one has to swim through to find the gems.

Also, it would be better if independent rappers were making independent music (in purely artistic terms) but that's not the case - while some do, most seem to just follow the mainstream trends

back in the day if you were underground you had to be tight but around the late 90s a lot of people saw the underground pioneers doing it and thought they could do it too. but that's life and art for ya, when something gets big people eventually want to get involved.

I think the influx of more rappers is a double edge sword.

It's definitely given us more weak rappers.

On the other hand it has opened the genre into many different styles.

I think biggest change is in how we listen to music. Majority of people don't listen to "albums" anymore. They listen to singles, and artist on a song by song basis, because are attention span is so short. I think this is the major adjustment to come in the next 5 years, I bet we will have artist that don't even release albums, just singles through Itunes.

i couldn't name too many weak rappers because usually if i hear something i don't like i keep it moving and maybe throw on something i do like, without taking out a notepad and writing down their name in my weak rapper list.

but imo there's about as much dope shit coming out of the bay as there was in '05, just w/o a funny ass bullshit "movement" attached to it.

I don't think it is as bad as the HYPHY era. When the local scene went to shit. But IMO their are still more weak rappers than solid rappers. But at the same time their is still alot of good underground music coming out. I still prefer to listen to local or west coast artist than the mainstream. Most Mainstream music seams to be catchy but not really saying anything if you really listen. But it also seams like for underground rappers their might be 1 or 2 in the crew who can really spit. Than like 6 other cats on every song that just really suck. Just because you can make a few words rhyme doesnt mean you should.

It's actually worse than in the hyphy era. At least hyphy was a style with identity, now even that is missing.

Bruh...I'm actually embarrassed if I flip through BET or MTV2 and catch any of the new videos. I'm embarrassed for the 'rappers', their crew or anyone down with them. It is pop music now...same with new country...new punk...

Back in the days, old school country was hardcore music that spoke volumes of originality...punk was almost the original 'street knowledge' type music...original rap followed in line with another culture's real gritty innovative and original style of music. This new 'music' is an abomination to anyone with human ears or anyone with any sense of originality.

I've also thought this would happen and perhaps it will in the future. But one would expect if that's the case that artists would release a small number of focused singles. Which would be bad because it would mean that most tracks would be made with how a hit single should sound in mind and this would eliminate a lot of the music that does lend itself to being a single and that was making albums more than just collections of tracks.

Yet what seems to be happening is that artists are making more music than ever and putting it on countless albums, semi-official albums, official mixtapes, unofficial mixtapes, etc, i.e. the opposite of what one would expect

For the most part mainstream rap now is crossover punk or light rock music
