You should mention that the article is about major label artists, and they're talking about bands (guitar, bass, drum, vocal).

So technically the band is making about 100 bucks per 1000.

So you're seeing a decent paycheck by that time, I would suppose. I'm sure this article is covering the Nickelbacks and Green Days of the world.

Most bands are now fronted recording costs by the label (say $10,000) and they don't see a penny of it until the debt is paid back. This is why there's an influx of bands on tour since its more probable to make the money to pay their debt back, then they can start collecting money from CD sales. It's a rip off but bands are slaves to the marketing system the labels have. Myspace almost killed this business model, but Facebook took over in popularity and we're back to square one.
