Simon Angilda, convicted of raping 92-year-old woman, looking at 85-year sentence
Simon Angilda claimed that he was drunk and high on Ecstasy when he raped a 92-year-old Leawood woman last June. That's what The Kansas City Star reported, and it sounds like a cover story (and not a very good one).
Jurors saw through it and convicted the 21-year-old of 14 counts of criminal activity -- including rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, home invasion and aggravated robbery -- and recommended an 85-year sentence (because they couldn't recommend ripping his genitals off and feeding them to rats, a la Johnny Rock).
If you need a refresher of Angilda's alleged monster lapse in humanity, here goes: On June 29, Angilda forced his way into the elderly woman's home, demanded money and sexually assaulted her. The woman was able to call 911 for help while Angilda rifled through her purse. Lucky for her, officers were on the scene within a couple of minutes.
Bad news for Angilda, while trying to flee, he sucker-punched an officer, who just happened to be the Leawood PD's "ground fighting instructor." So yeah, he didn't last long.
If that wasn't enough, Angilda violated a protection order on July 19, apparently contacting the victim.
Johnson County prosecutors say post-trial motions are scheduled for January 25. So more to come.
