OAKLAND -- The A's outrighted shortstop Hiro Nakajima to Triple-A Sacramento — where the high-priced Japanese infielder already has been playing all season — and removed him from the 40-man roster Friday.

Nakajima had to be exposed to waivers to be outrighted, but it was a fairly safe move for Oakland, which signed the 30-year-old shortstop to a two-year, $6.5 million contract in the off-season. Nakajima, who suffered a hamstring injury in spring training and lost the starting shortstop job to Jed Lowrie, has yet to play in the major leagues.

The A's likely made the move to clear a roster spot for the purposes of improving their catching depth. With John Jaso to miss at least the next three weeks and possibly the rest of the regular season with concussion issues, the A's desperately need to improve their minor league catching depth.

Nakajima, who is hitting .282 with four home runs and 26 RBIs for Sacramento in 75 games, was not in the River Cats' lineup Friday night.

Colon on the 15 day DL and couldn't have come at a better time. Maybe the groin injury is why his last 2 starts were garbage. Milone is back to take his place for now and hopefully he's been humbled being back in AAA and comes back with vengeance. We've been playing like shit lately and back to 1.5 games behind Texas again. Texas has an amazingly easy schedule the rest of the way so we just have to keep pace and hopefully take 5 of the 6 games we have left with them and I think we can take the division. We just cant afford to lose any more games to the Astros like that. 1 run losses to them, I just could not believe that shit. Maybe we can go on some sort of Dodgers type of run the rest of the way, that would do the trick.

I wonder if the A's starting hot winning as much as they did in the first half effect how they are playing now, have they ran out of gas? our pitchers mostly being 1st and 2nd yr players not being use to this much pressure.
how much is the hitting coach responsible for when players start off hitting so well then they have a stretch like we have been having lately where players can't hit for shit?

nah. still got gas.

dont put them not hitting on chili davis. hes a good hitting coach, proved himself the last 2 years. you can only do so much as a coach, and players not hitting this part of the season is on the player. what needs to be said and acted on, is the swings these guys are taking with runners on base. donaldson cespedes reddick moss, all try to hit a home run, instead of just swinging the bat and taking what they can get

cespedes just gunned down swisher trying for a double.

so who do you blame when the player or players in this case stay not hitting anything chasing everything to try and get a hr and have really bad at bats?
if the player is having trouble seeing his mistakes isn't that the hitting coachs' job/responsibility to step in and give him some advice? he's looking at these guys play and practice just about every single game day of the week observing and analyzing every single at bat so yes I do think they are to blame in some degree not all but some blame should be put on them.

you think they arent seeing their mistakes? do you have some inside the locker room knowledge I dont know about?

You think chili doesnt tell cepesdes or donaldson to not try and hit a hr every pitch? its fundemental shit, you can hound a player all you want, doesnt mean they are going to listen , or have the same mindset once they step into the box.

If all these guys were still under .250, then yeah, blame the hitting coach, but hitting coaches arent hypnotists. they cant make these guys swing or not swing at bad pitches

The 40 man roster is the 25 on the big league roster, anyone on the dl and minor leaguers. If you're in the minors and they wanna bring you up, you have to be placed on the 40 man roster.

You're thinking of when they expand the big league rosters Sept 1st.
