The film, scheduled for worldwide release in 2009, will revolve around Chun-Li, who’s set o be played by Smallville actress Kristen Kreuk, who plays Lana Lang in the TV series.
Capcom also confirmed that Michael Clark Duncan (The Island, Sin City, Daredevil, The Green Mile) is on board to play Balrog, Neal McDonough (The Hitcher, Flags of our Fathers, Minority Report) will take on the role of M Bison, Vega will be portrayed by Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas, and Chris Klein (We Were Soldiers, American Pie) will play Charlie Nash.
According to IMDB, Andrzej Bartkowiak (Doom, Romeo Must Die) will direct the film, which it names as Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.
We’re not sure which other Street Fighter characters are set to appear, but thinking back to the 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Kylie Minogue, you had the likes of Guile, Ryu, Ken, E Honda, Dhalsim and Zangief, and we’d be surprised if new additions to the cast of the latest film don’t pop up sometime soon.
The 20th Century Fox distributed film is part of Capcom’s Street Fighter 20th anniversary celebrations, which will also see the domestic (Japan) arcade release of the much-anticipated Street Fighter IV (pictured) this summer.
The new Street Fighter film is just one example of many classic, and not so classic, games making their way to the silver screen in the near future. Check out Edge’s recent Reel Gaming feature to read about how videogames are invading the big screen, again, which includes a comprehensive run-down of all the major titles making their way to Tinseltown.
