The terrible human cost of Bush and Blair's military adventure: 10,000 civilian deaths

UK and US authorities discourage counting of deaths as a result of the conflict. But academics are monitoring the toll and have identified a grim new milestone

David Randall

02/08/04: (The Independent) More than 10,000 civilians, many of them women and children, have been killed so far in the Iraqi conflict, The Independent on Sunday has learnt, making the continuing conflict the most deadly war for non-combatants waged by the West since the Vietnam war more than 30 years ago.

The passing of this startling milestone will be recorded today by Iraq Body Count, the most authoritative organisation monitoring the human cost of the war. Since the invasion began in March, this group of leading academics and campaigners has registered all civilian deaths in Iraq attributable to the conflict. They do this in the absence of any counts by US, British, or Baghdad authorities.

Iraq Body Count's co-founder, John Sloboda, said: "This official disinterest must end. We are now calling for an independent international tribunal to be set up to establish the numbers of dead, the circumstances in which they were killed and an appropriate and just level of compensation for the victims' families."

BUT THINK OF THE LIVES WE HAVE SAVED BY GETTING THE EVIL DICTATOR SADAM OUT OF POWER...
I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not, but we need only to look at the history of his regime to understand how true that statement really is.

10,000 dead.. is only a fraction of those who were killed under his (Saddam) reign. Civilians die during war, what were you expecting. Live with it and look forward to a brighter day.

And how many of those 10,000 are the result of:

a) suicide bombers
b) roadside bombs
c) land mines from Saddam's regime
d) stray bullets from Iraqi snipers and fighters
e) mortars
f) families living with a wanted insurgent who refuses to give himself up at the cost of his family
g) people living lawlessly
h) the prisoners Saddam freed from the jails right before the war
i) kidnappings
j) carjackings

Am I missing anything else?

Good point, I thought about this the other night when the news reported a bomb being detonated near a police station killing 50 people. The number could be up around the thousands, but you won't read about that in this post.

I don't lose any sleep at night over whats going on in Iraq, but I assure you my deepest regrets and condolences go out to those who were killed, as well as their families, and all who were affected by the ramifications of America's war on terrorism.

If we wanted to, we could blame Saddam's mother for the war; she birthed the killer who reeked havoc in the middle east.

This just in: Another 50 Iraqi's died by way of a suicide bomber. The day before yesterday, when the bomb went off near a police station, over 50 Iraqi police recruits were killed. Today, another 50 Iraqi's were killed by yet another suicide bomber.

I don't knock any Iraqis for fighting back. What is upsetting is how these people are killing their own innocent people. Instead of blowing up innocent people, go blow up American soldiers. I'm not anti-American, but our soldiers are the ones with the guns, not the innocent people applying for jobs. Instead of fighting like cowards, fight like a man. Anyways, innocent people are going to continue to die as a result of both sides.

It's not like they are filling out an aplication to work at the local Kwiki-Mart, they are trying to join the army or police force to help keep the U.S. in control of the country.

Join the army/police become a target, risk your life or serious injury for $200/month and a US lead occupation of your country, that's the message they are trying to send. And it'll probably make people think twice.
