Man I still thought he'd beat Smith. Like you said it's just the way boxing is, not too many happy endings.
On a different note, I really want to see Usyk against some other CW titlist. And it's definitely possible cause as much shit as that division gets there's always a fight happening between two top 10 cruisers.

And in China Cermeno defended "his title". Would be nice if the WBA stood by their word and had the winner of this fight fight the winner of Rigo/Flores.
I'm loving this month, they stacked so many good fights/match ups. Povetkin/Duhaupas happened too. I may watch that card later today just to catch some of the prospects that fought.

That's what pisses me off is that this was completely unnecessary. He was coming off a TWO YEAR LAYOFF and coming in the ring at 52 is just ridiculous, I don't care who you are. So fighting a big strong young hungry fighter is never going to be easy for an old man, now you throw in two years of inactivity? Forget about it. And it was a pointless fight - Smith is a top ten guy and that's it. Nothing historic about this fight. So if that's case, why not fight a safe fight for retirement, like someone like Murat or Shumonev? Such a stupid decision in hindsight to ruin his "never been stopped" in over 20 years of fighting. Even though he got beaten badly by Kovalev, he went the distance and i thought that was something to hang his hat on - not only had he never been stopped, not even Kovalev in his prime could stop him two months shy of 50. That's gone now because Hopkins wanted to test father time one last time.
It could be worse though. At least he's not fighting local fighters in Russia for table scraps, getting KOd every other month for 10,000 Rubles like Comrade Jones.
I'll always respect Hopkins though, he'll obviously be in the hall of fame five years from now and people will remember for what he did at middleweight and his accomplishments post-40, and not so much his embarrassing exit from the ring (literally and figuratively).

While I agree that he shouldn't have come back, this won't stain him at all. While it would've been cool to retire never having been KO'd, it's such a minor accomplishment in a sea of greatness.
It's actually probably better that it happened this way. A close split decision or something like that may have tempted him to come back. The finality of this, getting punch out of the ring by a guy you would've clowned 3-4 years ago just confirms it.
Also, I don't EVER take what someone says after getting clobbered like that seriously. Hopkins can say what he'd like immediately after in the ring and getting punched out like that, but once he watches the tape he'll know what happened, whether he admits it publicly or not.
Now it only Roy stops taking fights and they could both go in the hall together, that would be kind of cool.
