Hrgovic becomes the first boxer from Croatia to win a medal in boxing with a bronze at super heavyweight. I thought he won rounds 2-3 and should've advanced but round 2 was close.

So Nikitin dropped out due to injuries (that's how bad he was getting beat up past couple fights he won by robberies) which means Shakur Stevenson advances to the next round, meaning he is guaranteed a Gold or Silver.

Mayweather is in Rio and tweeted he signed Stevenson to TMT:

Shakur has remained silent about this and has not confirmed or denied it.

Personally, I really hope he doesn't sign with TMT. TMT has shown no evidence they are capable of building new stars. I would have much preferred he signed with Top Rank for a two to three year deal and then become a free agent. The reason being is Top Rank is excellent at building young talent into stars, better than anyone else by far in this regards. They can become a problem once a fighter becomes a star (thus why I think he should try and sign a three year deal or something along those lines and leave if/when he has to).

Bit if he signs with TMT I'm sure that probably means he'll also hire Al Haymon as his manager, so if he gets into PBC I'm sure that will work out as well. Regardless, a Silver or Gold Medal guarantees the fact promoters/managers will be drooling over the idea of signing him so I would have hope he would have waited longer and explore all the options (with a lawyer) instead of signing with Mayweather just because he's down there scouting. In any case, I'm sure this kid has a very bright future ahead of him!!

Fuck, just watched the Heavyweight robbery. For the most part, decisions have been pretty fair but these two fights were clear blatant robberies. Not a good look for Russia right now.

This was far worse than Conlan's to be honest. I could actually see an argument for Nikitin winning, there's no way Levit lost that fight. Levit should've had the honor of beating Savon & Tischenko back to back, who are #2 & #1 going into the tournament, and going home with gold.

What a shame.

Good fight for Shakur. Dropped it to Ramirez. Cuba takes home 3 golds and 3 bronze medals and if Sotomayor wins tomorrow that'd be another Cuban fighter taking home gold (although it would be for Azerbaijan).

When they announced the rule changes in 2014 it was really really slow transition with only a small number of pro Cuban athletes but that's been increasing lately, so if that trend continues and in larger number, these guys might be able to go pro without having to defect within this next year or two.

When they announced the rule changes in 2014 it was really really slow transition with only a small number of pro Cuban athletes but that's been increasing lately, so if that trend continues and in larger number, these guys might be able to go pro without having to defect within this next year or two.

Yeah, I'd much prefer they defect and actually get compensated for the beating they inflict on themselves. Not a huge fan of these guys fighting 12 rounds professional fighters and all the money going to the government.

Yeah but some of them support the Cuban system and would prefer to do it legally versus having to defect and never be able to return to their country and families. For those that want to defect, sure absolutely, I hope they defect too, but for those that don't want to this can open the doors for them to fight professionally.

There's no way of knowing if they're for or against the government. Some don't want to leave their families and speaking out against the government or even being suspected of wanting to defect will shut them out of international competition.

I wouldn't be a huge fan of watching everything these guys have to go through and fighting top pros only to get nothing for it.

So a few firsts from this Olympics which are pretty cool.

Yuberjen Martínez (light flyweight) is the first Colombian boxer to win a medal higher than bronze (silver)
Claressa Shields (middleweight) becomes the first American to win back to back gold medals

Uzbekistan wins 3 gold medals and leads all medals in boxing with 7 for the first time ever (on both accounts) and Hasanboy Dumastov becomes the first Uzbek fighter to win the Val Barker award

Very big for Uzbekistan. I feel like Kazakhistan was unlucky in some of their decisions and probably should have won more medals. Levit, Yeleussinov and Alimkhanuly are talented guys that can probably make it as pros, I think with Golovkins success in Europe and America a lot more promoters are open to sign these guys.

I'd like to see if any if these Uzbek fighters can make it big as a pro. Ruslan Chagaev is the biggest name I can think of in past years on the pro level. Of these guys from Rio, Dusmatov stands out the most, 23 years old and I heard he signed a pro contract with a South African promoter. Not too sure about the other guys.

Well I'd much prefer the door open. Guys can still defect if that's their goal while at the same time it provides opportunities to guys who don't want to defect to fight pro. Defecting is still going to be there, in fact this would probably make it even easier to do so since pro fighting would happen abroad.
