You know how we were talking about Rhaegar supposedly kidnapping Lyanna led to Roberts Rebellion? Well that was just the start of it. The Mad King BRUTALLY killing Brandon and Rickard Stark is what really set things off.

Execution
After Lyanna's abduction, her older brother Brandon was enraged and rode to King's Landing demanding the release of his sister and the death of Rhaegar. Aerys arrested him for treason and called for his father to come to the capital to ransom him. When Lord Rickard complied, Aerys, now utterly mad, arrested him for treason as well.
Lord Rickard demanded a trial by combat. Aerys declared "fire" the champion of the House Targaryen and had Lord Rickard suspended from the rafters of the throne room while pyromancers lit a blaze beneath him. As he burned, Brandon was brought into the throne room, a leather cord attached to a strangulation device was wrapped around his neck. Aerys told Brandon his father was a dead man but there was a chance to save him. A longsword was placed on the floor just out of Brandon's reach. And the more he struggled to reach it, the more the cord tightened around his throat. Brandon Stark strangled himself trying to free his father, who was roasted alive in his own armor. The entire court stood and watched this atrocity take place, Ser Jaime Lannister and the Kingsguard among them.[1]

Deleted scenes
Brandon Stark is executed by the Mad King.
Due to limitations of filming time, there was very little shot for the season which was not eventually used. However, a notable scene cut was a flashback scene featuring the execution of Brandon Stark at the hands of the Mad King. Actors were cast for this scene and it was filmed, even appearing in some trailers, but ultimately was not used. The scene did not even appear on DVD or Blu-ray releases of the season.[2]

I think that's the real reason Ned never told her the truth about Jon. He knew she'd fuck it up lol.
I'm going to ramble on here but there are theories that Benjen Stark knows the truth about Jon. Theories that go deeper too; Benjen and his sister Lyanna Stark were very close growing up and some suspect that he helped her "escape" and run off with Rhaegar to get married in secret, which if if they did get married, Jon is no bastard born child, he would be a legit Targaryen. Anyways, the official story is Benjen stayed at Winterfell because a Stark always has to be there and shortly after Ned returned home after Roberts Rebellion, Benjen suddenly left to the Wall and joined the Nights Watch. GRRM has never explained why but says he will one day. This leads some to believe he feels guilty for helping Lyanna which eventually led to her death. Or perhaps Ned "made" him go to the Wall because he knew. What does this have to do with Catelyn? Nothing really other than I'm betting Ned trusted Benjen more than he did that dumb cunt lol

watching the episodes again, got a couple questions I'll throw out there
shae the whore came back to testify against tyrion...does this mean bronn betrayed tyrion? cuz bronn was sposed to have seen shae off on a ship
when mance and them attacked the wall, why didn't they attempt to breach one of the unmanned castles? I mean, the obvious answer could be to further the storyline for the show, but just thought I'd ask just in case
