Because the idea is to "inspire" kids to go to college, work hard, graduate with 100k-200k in debt...get a good paying job within 2 years (defer the debt for 6 months and then go into forbearance), pay off the bill in less than 10 years, and live a prosperous life between the ages of 30-65 when you retire.
Unfortunately, that looks like ass to a kid who is living in the lower class, and just perpetuates the shittiness. The "American dream" has turned into a nightmare in the course of 50 years. My mom's total tuition was $2k back in 1969-73. It cost more than that for COMMUNITY COLLEGE in 2016 for one year.

I love the idea that $15 an hour, which is $31,200 annually, is living large and people wouldn't have motivation to go to school and get better jobs lol my man, $31,000 a year is barely getting by, not getting by at all in certain cities. The average income in Seattle for example is $71,273. Good luck making it on $31k

the kids who want to go to school right now, try. the fucked system doesn't let them all get in, but they try. the ones who don't give a fuck about college, which is a huge chunk of society, don't try. just like a lot of kids don't try, in free high school. in Bernie and his supporters pipe dreams minimum wage goes up $15 an hour while the rest of the country stops. therefor the $15 an hour is worth so much more money. minimum wage is like $8 in the mid west. you guys believe that extra $7 an hour is going to be extra money.
Doritos buys ingredients from multiple sources. those sources now have to pay their minimum wage workers more money. they also pay the state more payroll taxes. they also pay the workers comp carrier more workers comp premium. those sources will also pay their employees who make "above" minimum wage a little extra so there is still a gap. those sources raise their prices, obviously. that cost forwards itself to Doritos manufacturing. then you go to distribution, and the same shit applies. then 7-11 pays their workers $15, along with extra payroll taxes and workers comp premium. then the Doritos go up in price because of the obvious shit i just expressed. add that to every item in 7-11, McDees, and where ever the fuck you can imagine. is that $15 an hour really worth $15 an hour? no. it just makes you feel better for supporting it.
how can college be free for all? do you think they should run off volunteer labor and supplies? if you think it should, do you think it can? free college is nice in theory, but it's not realistic.
It's not realistic in our outdated system that has long past it's useful purpose but if you want this country to progress at all and the world to progress then absolutely school should be free to all, along with healthcare and basic housing and a basic right to fair pay. If you want this country to continue the downward spiral of widening the economic gap of the rich and everyone else, by all means support the status quo.
When the education system is a for profit entity there is a deep fundamental flaw. When the healthcare system is for profit there is a deep fundamental flaw. Doritos is an excellent example you bring up, since it has harmful chemicals and bullshit junk that no one in their right minds would ever include in food unless it's about maximizing profit and making the shareholders money, so that ethics, quality and everything else go out the window, and they realize hey! We can save millions of dollars to switching to a chemical that is used in rubber car tires, so what if it's harmful it will widen our profit margins, brilliant! If this is the world you're OK with, where the worker bees work too much, get sick, fall behind in medical debt, struggle to pay their mortgage if their lucky enough while getting fucked over in every which direction, well that's a pretty sick and twisted world view. It's time we start evolving this country and become more progressive rather than go backwards.

I give credit to Bernie, even though he has done nothing in four decades as a politician, he doesn't flip his positions to appease. However, he is less of a socialist than Hillary.
