They don't need him at this point, as long as they got the gist of the stories as far as an ending goes they are fine. They already deviate enough from the books to be its own separate entity really. Just have a few more seasons then end it and move on to Dunk and Egg and whatever else they are planning, this money train is going to keep on chugging regardless if he ever finishes the damn books so I doubt they even care lol. Only the book readers are somewhat pissed that the show will spoil some of the plots but so what, I'm a book reader and I don't care, he's never going to finish anyways and when he dies I bet those hardcore GRRM fans that run that Westeros website will finish it for him, I mean GRRM checks with them for fact checking and whatnot as it is, they seem to know more about his universe than he can remember.

Don't fall victim to the dramatic irony, Jon Snow is pretty much what the entire books have been about this entire time lol, pretty sure he's going to be there til the very end.
Face it, you will probably be rooting for him when he turns bad ass, and is the smartest most calculating character left come the end. He'll be the character making no mistakes, having learned all the lessons in the hardest ways. At the very least he'll probably get some kind of super satisfying stark revenge arc

Some Targaryens were awesome though. It's basically 50/50 on being awesome or crazy if you're born a Targaryen. Like Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, he was loved by everyone and all around good dude. And who is he? The leading candidate of being Jon Snows real dad, and the mother being Eddard's sister Lyanna Stark. So that is literally fire and ice, the god damn name of the book lol. Everything points to Jon Snow being Targaryen/Stark. If he isn't then it would be one of the biggest let downs in the history of storytelling lol

GRRM knows the end game the problem for him is finishing it all. I'm sure there are millions of side characters and whatnot that he doesn't know what to do with but the idea of an ending I'm sure he figured out decades ago.
