HERESY @HERESY I just found out the names of Cotto's list of possible opponents and it's worse than I thought. Embarrassed to type them.....Timothy Bradley, K9 Bundrage and Brandon Rios.
He played himself. He should have taken the Canelo fight. This fool needs to hand over the belt ASAP.

Quillin on Golovkin: “We Need Each Other To Make That Next Level”

Peter QuillinAs part of Al Haymon’s ever growing stable of boxers, Peter Quillin’s options after his fight with Andy Lee, continue to grow. Al Haymon has plenty of middleweight contenders to match with Quillin and more television channels at his disposal every day. Danny Jacobs, Billy Joe Saunders may be two legitimate options, but as always in the sport of boxing, the fight we all want to see seems nearly impossible to make.

Peter Quillin spoke with ThaBoxingVoice about why a fight with Gennady Golovkin has not happened yet and what would need to happen for that fight to be made in the future.

“Well, he’s on HBO… before Richard Schaefer left Golden Boy, I was willing to fight him. He didn’t want it to be off of HBO. He wanted to keep his relationship intact with HBO and at the time I was on Showtime.”

Of all of the channels Al Haymon has been partnering up with over the past two months, the one that remains out of his reach, is also the one that Gennady Golovkin is committed to; HBO… of course.

For now the possibility of a Quillin/GGG matchup seems out of reach but one nice takeaway from the conversation was that there was quite a bit of diplomacy coming from Peter Quillin toward Golovkin. This seems to be something more and more common among Haymon fighters, which may be an early sign of future bridge-building.

“When the fight is happening, for the right money and everyone can agree to it, then the fight will happen. Until then, Kid Chocolate is in no shape, no way, no how runnin’ from nobody…”

Quillin continued, “He is no more valuable to me, and I’m no more valuable to him and it’s almost like we need each other to make that next level fight and take us to the next level.”

The question remains whether Golovkin would have to agree to fight on a PBC network like NBC or if the fight could be made on HBO. Of course, it is going to be an Al Haymon decision.

“It would have to go through Al Haymon, and we sit down with Al and figure out the logistics and that’s how it can be made.”

Peter Quillin has an April 11th fight with WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee before his next opponent will be decided on but anyone in the know will tell you a Golovkin fight seems about as far away as it can get for the time being. The upside is that we are seeing Haymon fighters showing respect to rival fighters more and more often than we have seen in the past which may benefit negotiations (and fight fans) down the road.

Demetrius Andrade vs. Jermell, Jermall Charlo Saga Revealed

Demetrius-Andrade_FukudaDemetrius Andrade has been head-hunting, but unfortunately for the current WBO light middleweight champion, the only thing he has been able to take a whiff at, has been hydrogen. Like all fighters, Andrade does not want to fight a natural element of the earth. An element that feels no pain, but he wants to inflict pain on a human that has approximately 9.5 percent of hydrogen in him. In this case, it’s Jermell Charlo.

Andrade (21-0, 14 KO’s) has not fought since June 2014 and has been desperate to get a fight. His last victory was a decisive stoppage against English boxer Brian Rose, who was knocked out 14 February against Carson Jones for the WBC International light middleweight title.
Rumors have floated around continuously about Andrade’s plans on the internet; which are plentiful, but Andrade attempted to break it down for the fans.

“They wanted me to fight at 160; that was a rumor. It got on the Internet,” said an energetic Andrade explained. “My name got in the mix, so I was supposed to fight. Then December 13th came, and I was supposed to fight Charlo, one of the Charlo brothers on the Alexander-Khan card. Now that was not a contract that was faxed to me, or emailed or mailed to the house,” he explained.

“It wasn’t, it was just something over the internet that people were tuned into. Showtime just blasted it out, but nothing was in writing for me,” he added.

Andrade pleads that he never saw the necessary paperwork to make the fight happen.

“I was like, well where is the paperwork,” he questioned. “I signed mine, and I’m still waiting for you guys to sign yours and I signed mine the last week of January. What are we waiting for?”

As a result, Andrade turned his attention to the TV networks, stating that either one or the other needs to come up with the money to make the fight, albeit that is not his job. All Andrade wants to do is get in that ring.

This is a continuing problem in the sport. For example, with the Hank Lundy and Dierry Jean situation. It appears that it is not the fighters who are the problem; it’s the people on the business end who are preventing fights from taking place.

“HBO has my last refusal,” he stated. “Therefore they can match the numbers that Showtime was putting up and take the fight. Showtime could double it up, or all Showtime has to do is put the money up, or HBO has to put the money up. I am ready to fight,” he elucidated.
Andrade then made a case for why the fight would be an intriguing matchup.

“I’m young, he’s young, he’s undefeated, I’m undefeated, I’m hungrier, he’s hungry and this is what I have done since I was six,” he added.
“If your boy, don’t get me wrong; no disrespect, he is a young, hungry guy that wants to make something of himself, but you are barking up the wrong tree, brother,” Andrade exclaimed.

It is hard to tell what is real and what isn’t in boxing these days, but from what Andrade is alleging, it is Charlo who needs to take the next step.

“Let’s make it happen. Sign that contract so we can go ahead and make this fight happen,”

There are always two sides to every story. But, it was Jermell’s twin brother Jermall, also undefeated that answered questions on his brother’s situation with Andrade.

“I don’t care about Demetrius Andrade,” an upset Charlo said. “He had a chance to fight my twin brother; he turned the fight down, now he is begging for a fight. Next time choose wisely.”

Will Demetrius Andrade and Jermell Charlo ever meet in the ring? Unfortunately in the sport these days, we see this type of doltish banter going back and forth. The politics and the business side of the sport tend to get in the way of what the sport is all about and that is making the best quality fights against the best possible opponents.

In addition, the people with the brains in the sport- the promoters and the money makers alike, have the ability to take advantage of fighters who are not knowledgeable about the process. No one is willing to say it, but it happens all the time. Until all of the fighters educate themselves about the goods and the evils of the sport, we will continue to have these problems.

In a perfect world, the sport would be 100 percent sound and rid of all its flaws. But, we live in an imperfect sport and an imperfect world, so we must embrace what we have and just learn to cope with the problems.

So we all know Chavez and GGG agreed to fight each other last year, but then Chavez pulled out.

So after the Murray fight, Chavez tweeted he wants Golovkin and that he wants to bet him $1 million dollars of the purse that GGG won't knock him out. Chavez then said "come to my weight class. 168 or 170" (lol at 170). Anyways, GGG responded by saying he accepts the bet. So we'll see how Chavez does against Andrzej Fonfara in April (is this at 175 pounds??). So that's a potential big fight for later in the year if GGG can't get Cotto/Canelo.

Provodnikov-Matthysse Set Down in Verona, New York

By Steve Kim

Sources have told BoxingScene.com that the highly anticipated junior welterweight showdown between Rusland Provodnikov and Lucas Matthysse will be staged at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, New York on April 18th as part of a split-site doubleheader on HBO, which will also feature Terrence Crawford, likely against Thomas Dulorme. This deal was finalized on Monday afternoon.

Golden Boy Promotions and Banner Promotions had hoped to put this fight in the Los Angeles area (specifically the StubHub Center in Carson) but found that these various venues were already booked.

The Turning Stone Resort and Casino is no stranger to boxing having staged cards in the past. Gennady Golovkin made his stateside debut in 2012 at this venue. Ringside seats for Provodnikov-Matthysse are expected to be no more than $75.

Bob Arum To Launch Counter-Strike At Haymon with Network Deal

“The wise learn many things from their enemies,” – Aristophanes

I recently wrote a piece that stated that if the rumors about an Al Haymon deal with ESPN are true, then the war is already over. With this final ESPN piece in place, he would have a strategic stronghold from which to build his boxing empire. I ended the piece by chastising Top Rank and Golden Boy for years of complacency and urged them to become more aggressive. Ask, and you shall receive, as now there are signs that this may indeed be happening.bobArum

Nestor Gibbs of ThaBoxingVoice was able to squeeze a few exclusive details out of Top Rank’s Bob Arum about his company’s plans for the future and how those plans might play out on network television. Gibbs brought up Arum working with Haymon to get the Mayweather/Pacquiao deal done, as a possible sign that Arum would be willing to work with Haymon in the future. Arum was asked specifically about the possibility of some of his fighters ending up on NBC under Al Haymon’s new Premium Boxing Champions series.

Arum replied, “As far as putting our fighters on NBC, I wouldn’t count on that because we will be announcing a major network deal within the next couple of weeks, We have a lot of spots to fill on our shows.”

Arum’s casual tone made the comment sound overstated. It came out as more of an off-hand remark than the kind of game-changing thing that a “Top Rank/major network deal” would actually be. The follow-up question keyed in on what it was exactly that Bob Arum was saying. When prodded, regarding the “major network” claim and whether it would be a CBS or FOX level deal, Arum confirmed that assumption.

“That is correct; that is correct… I mean I don’t want to characterize ‘this station’, ‘this station’ but yes, it will be on free television… major network.”

Top Rank does not have the best recent history when it comes to exclusive deals with networks. From 2006-2008 Top Rank churned out a notorious string of unwatchable fights that would make anyone skeptical of their willingness to actually make the best of an exclusive deal with a network but Top Rank is in a completely different situation in 2015 than they were back in 2006.

Right now, Top Rank is fighting for their life. They are under a tremendous amount of pressure to put on great events and fortify the strength of their brand, which is now in direct competition with Al Haymon and his multi-network spanning “PBC” series. The days of complacency are over. Bob Arum and Top Rank will have to fight to survive, and we will all benefit as fans of the sport.

This is all very reminiscent of how things played out years ago in professional wrestling. It was direct competition from Ted Turner backed WCW that forced the then WWF to push the envelope and up their game. This direct competition fueled both companies and rocketed professional wrestling to a popularity that remains unrivaled to this day.

I would love to see the same type of effect on boxing. Right now, Al Haymon is pushing Bob Arum and Oscar De La Hoya, and that is a great thing for all of us. If you care enough to read an article like this, you are exactly the person that stands to benefit from these huge promotions trying to outdo each other.

So far, the pattern has been one in which Al Haymon makes a move (or two, or three), and the other guys scramble and react. The latest news from Arum is fantastic, but it still reflects this “reactionary” pattern. The next thing I would like to see, as a fan of this kind of competition, is either Arum or De La Hoya taking the lead on the next move. They have stood back and reacted long enough; I would like to see them be proactive and present an innovative new idea that shakes up the world of boxing even further.

People can say Mayweather vs. Pacquiao is the fight that will save boxing but, I disagree. The real fight that will save boxing is the one that is happening behind the scenes. The one between Al Haymon, Bob Arum, and Oscar De La Hoya. It is how this fight plays out that will determine just how healthy the sport of boxing will be in the years to come. I personally think the future looks as bright as it ever has

Abel Sanchez Says Oscar Will “Milk” Canelo; “Cotto Would Never Fight Us”

Golovkin-CottoWith each successive knockout, Gennady Golovkin finds himself in an increasingly unfortunate situation. Gennady needs to get in the ring with a name like Cotto or Canelo to help elevate him to the next level. Unfortunately, Golovkin’s star isn’t bright enough to allow him to offer “name” opponents the kind of incentive (i.e., money) it will take for them to get in the ring with him. It’s a classic “catch 22” situation that Gennady’s team is going to have to figure out in the upcoming months.

ThaBoxingVoice caught up with Abel Sanchez to discuss Gennady Golovkin’s future and what his chances are of getting Cotto or Canelo into the ring by the end of the year. Sanchez doesn’t sound very confident for 2015.

“First of all, I don’t think Cotto would ever fight us. Canelo may fight us in 2016, at the end of the year maybe or sometime in the middle of the year.”

He then went on to suggest that Oscar De La Hoya would continue to “milk” Canelo and protect his star before he would put him in the ring with a guy like Golovkin. Passive aggressive comments aside, Sanchez, didn’t disagree with the tactic.

“I think Oscar’s gonna use Canelo like Bob used uhh, Manny… to build him up a little bit first before he puts him in a tough fight. Canelo’s a young man; he’s only 22, 23 years old so there’s no reason to put him in against a guy like Golovkin. But I think Oscar should… and is going to, milk it as long as he can.”

On the off chance that Cotto or Canelo would be willing to get into the ring with GGG, Sanchez insists that neither fighter would be able to last more than 8 rounds. When asked, he elaborated on why he remains so confident in that prediction.Canelo-Golovkin

Sanchez explained, “… Gennady is on a different level and uhh, I think that both of those guys understand that, and both of those guys’ management teams understand that. That’s why they don’t want to come forward and face him… if they wanted to face Golovkin, they would have made offers or called promoters…”

Gennady Golovkin’s success seems to be his biggest obstacle this year. As long as he keeps disposing of his opponents in brutal fashion, people will continue to question the level of his competition. For now, the guys that actually do accept Golovkin’s legitimacy, happen to be the superstars he is desperate to face. Until those stars begin to underestimate him as much as his detractors, we may have to settle for more of the same from Golovkin in 2015.

Assuming Cotto doesn't take Golovkins offer for June, who do you think is the best fighter as far as competitiveness goes?

All the title holders have fights - Lee vs Quillin and N'dam vs Lemieux.

So that leaves guys like Tureano, Monroe, Eubank Jr. and Sergio Mora.

I like Monroe, I think he has the most potential out of that bunch but it's probably too soon for him. So that probably leaves Tureano. What do you think?

I guess I like Monroe the best out of those four. He's solid and can move well, don't think he can pop enough to keep Golovkin off him. Mora would get crushed, I'm not really confident Eubank Jr is gonna beat Chudinov this weekend - it's at the least a pick em fight, and Johnson would be a cool fight for a minute until Johnson gets smoked.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Tureano would be the most entertaining, but if people want to see GGG against a guy who boxes well and moves that's Monroe. But like you said not enough power to keep him off and earn any respect, but he could probably at least frustrate Golovkin for a bit.

GGG better not go backwards and fight none of those sardine cans lol. Its gotta end somewhere. Got Em!!
He probably will have to take a step back from Murray considering who is available. Golovkin wants to fight in April/May/June, so he can either stay active and stay in the spotlight, or sit on the sidelines for 6+ months while waiting for someone who may or may not fight him. Here is who is available and who inst:

Andy Lee vs Peter Quillin for the WBO title, April 11th
Danny Jacobs vs Caleb Truax, April 11th
Billy Joe Saunders vs TBA, April 11th (and then will fight the Lee/Quillin winner)
N’Dam vs David Lemieux for the IBF title, date yet to be determined
Canelo vs Kirkland, May 9th
Chavez jr vs Andrzej Fonfara, April 18th
Lara - can't fight on HBO
Cotto ??????????
Tureano Johnson ??????
Willie Monroe Jr ??????
Sergio Mora ???????

So the options are Cotto, Tureano, Monroe and Mora. Obviously they are going after Cotto, but he won't take it.

And if you want to bring up Ward, he's not available for that time frame (even if he was, he's looking at a tune up fight on a Roc Nation New York card). The rest of 168 pound division? Froch? He dropped his belt, only interest is fighting Chavez in Vegas or retirement. Kessler? Recently retired. Anthony Dirrell vs Badou Jack 4/25. Bika vs Stevenson in April. Andre Dirrell? Deal almost finalized to fight DeGale 4/25. Felix Sturm vs Fedor Chudinov 5/9.

The wildcard could be Demetrius Andrade. Not sure WTF is going on with him though, he pulled out of the Korobov fight at 160, then accepted the Charlo fight at 154, only to pull out saying he didn't like the purse, but now it appears talks are going on again. No idea what's up with him and if the Charlo fight will be made or not.

Chavez jr vs Andrzej Fonfara, April 18th. So the earliest Chavez can fight GGG is July - September. Golovkin already accepted. Now Chavez has to win His upcoming fight at 175. And just to be clear, Chavez pulled out of a ggg fight last year which would have been a $10m payday for him.

And why 170? Is Chavez that lazy he can't even make 168 anymore?

^^^so, how much is Chavez getting for his next fight? Who would you sign with, $2mill paydays on up with your promoter or a manager who is gonna use you for his own personal gains? $10 mill is a lot to drop.
