FLOYD MAYWEATHER:
"Laying back, relaxing, enjoying good weather, palm trees and piña coladas. While they continue to lie about making the fight...I'm just going to continue to travel and explore the world on my private jet," stated undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather, he recently took to his social network, Shots, to shoot down a recent report by TMZ suggesting that the long-awaited mega-fight with 8-division world champion Manny Pacquiao is a done deal. We're told that when the report was first released on Friday evening, Mayweather on his private jet heading to Jamaica.
Not long after the TMZ story first surfaced, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Showtime Sports, Stephen Espinoza, was the first to dispute it on his Twitter account, writing, "TMZ usually has good sources. This time, not so much." He then followed that up with a quick interview, telling Rick Reeno of BoxingScene.com, "These series of reports that the fight is done is completely baffling to us. Rick, this deal is not close to being done, and everyone involved knows that. Top Rank's lawyers have said that there are significant open issues, so I don't understand how Bob can conceivably be saying the fight is imminent and will be closed within the next couple of days...I want to make it clear that it's not going to be this weekend and it's not going to be in the next couple of days."
Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum also disputed the TMZ report, telling the New York Daily News, "No, I'm aware of the report, but there are still some contractual issues to work out. It's close but not done yet...We have two days, it [an announcement] could happen [on Sunday]. That would be incredible, wouldn't it?" While it's true that both sides are still working to finalize details of the bout, out understanding is that the fighters and their representatives are all on board, but there are still some issues that exist between the two networks, Showtime and HBO.
