Algieri Confident Judges Won't Favor Pacquiao in China

If Chris Algieri actually has a shot at upsetting Manny Pacquiao, the light-punching underdog likely would have to do so by decision.
And if their 12-round WBO welterweight title fight Saturday night in Macau, China, goes to the scorecards, Algieri isn’t concerned he won’t get a fair shot in a building full of Pacquiao supporters.
“I don’t think fans score fights, judges do,” Algieri said. “Judges are a lot closer to the action than fans are. Fans sure can sway the way a fight looks, but I’m confident in the abilities and the professionalism of the judges. So if I do what I’m supposed to do and things go the way we’ve planned, we’ll have a victory regardless of the fan support [for Pacquiao].”
New Mexico’s Levi Martinez, Chicago’s Patrick Morley and Florida’s Michael Pernick are the three judges who’ve been assigned to the Pacquiao-Algieri fight (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT; HBO Pay-Per-View; $69.95 in HD). Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter, doesn’t believe Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) owns the advantage the Filipino superstar is perceived to have because he’ll battle Long Island’s Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs) in nearby China.
“You have to understand,” Arum explained, “if a fighter was fighting in America, and he was Mexican, would you say that the American judges would favor him because they come from the same continent? And the answer is ‘no.’ Manny Pacquiao is a Filipino and most of the people at the fight will be Chinese, whether from Hong Kong or mainland China. And to say that the Chinese would favor a Filipino over an American is to not understand the geo-political nature of different countries.
“The Chinese have as much affinity for a Filipino as they would an American, just like Americans would not necessarily favor a Mexican who is fighting over here. I mean, you have to understand that. We can't get into the narrow thinking that an Asian is an Asian. That’s silly. That just isn’t the case. There’s Thais, there’s Indonesians, there’s Japanese, there’s Chinese, there’s Filipinos. There’s various groups and they’re not always particularly friendly to each other.”

MACAO - Manny Pacquiao weighed in at 143.8lb Saturday for his welterweight world title defence, but his opponent Chris Algieri had trouble on the scales ahead of Sunday's fight.
Undefeated American Algieri could not make the catchweight limit of 144lb and was still 0.20lb over after a second attempt despite stripping down to his bare essentials at the Saturday morning weigh-in (Friday night in the US) at the Venetian Macau's Cotai Arena.
Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs) was given two hours to sweat off the remaining weight and came back for a third attempt which saw him finally go under at 143.6lb.
Despite the hiccup, which would have thrown Algieri's final preparations for Sunday's fight slightly behind schedule, the former kickboxer from Long Island predicted he would win.
"I did all the hard work I needed to do," said Algieri. "I know I can count on my skills to do it. This is dream come true and I'm ready to rock."
Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) has been relaxed and confident all week in Macau. The Filipino eight-weight world champion has been impressing all who have watched him train with the intensity and power he has shown in his workouts.
"I've been preparing like the early days in my career," said Pacquiao at the weigh-in. "I want to get back the hungriness and the aggressiveness that I had when I was young."
Earlier this week Pacquiao had said he enjoyed fighting unbeaten boxers, such as Algieri, because he liked to teach them what it is like to lose. But on Saturday the Sarangani province congressman was more diplomatic.
"I like to fight undefeated fighters like Algieri because it's an honour to be in a fight like that," Pacquiao said.

Algieri is gonna give Pac hella problems I think people are going to be shocked to see Pac struggle. Dude is big, his trainer was saying they are expecting him to be about 158 pounds inside the ring. His height, movement, really good jab and long reach are gonna be difficult. His only downside here is lack of power, if he can't get Pacs respect early maybe Pacquiao catches him cold. If not, it's gonna be a long night.
Definitely wish this was regular HBO though, too many ppvs this year hurt an already weak year of boxing. But they know X amount of people are going to buy a Pacquiao fight regardless, so if 300k buy at $60 a piece, plus the millions they get from the casinos in Macau, they get their money and are happy.
I disagree with fat Dan saying this will do 500k to 600k, I think 350k AT BEST.

I've always been a form believer in less ppvs. Maybe two a year tops.
As for the networks, yeah that would be the ultimate goal but as of now there'smore money on HHBO and SHO. Let's see how Al Haymon does with his NBC deal, if the guy can find away to make GOOD fights and get these guys paid at the same time, then that would be sick as fuck. But that remains to be seen.

thats what we do for ufc fights just get a group of people chip in or if we are just wanna watch a couple fights we go to buffalo wild wings and watch for free

Ya, his height and reach is going to be a huge factor but Manny is super janky with his angles and movement. Plus Algieri doesn't necessarily pack scary power.
If Manny is mean he will be awarded the late stoppage. We haven't seen him bully for years though.
