What's funny is with both rematches Manny vs Bradley...and Floyd vs Maidana the majority of people said there is no reason for a rematch because the top dogs (Floyd/ Pac)
Lol there were huge differences.
Pacquiao vs Bradley 1 everyone thought Manny won by a wide margin but was robbed. The second fight happened After Pacquiao was knocked out by JMM so a lot of his drawing power took a blow.
Floyd vs Maidana 1 was viewed as Floyd's toughest fight in his career or at least since Castillo. I think the casuals were expecting the immediate rematch would be more of the same (which was a really exciting fight ) whereas the experts and hardcore fans or whatever predicted more of a wider decision for Floyd.
You, or we I should say, really can't make assumptions based on what the critics and hardcore fans say because Thats the minority. Case in point, everyone slammed Garcia vs Salka, it was a joke in the boxing world, and yet it got better ratings than cards 20x better. Critics and hardcore fans mean jack shit at the end of the day, which is why all these crappy mismatches we've been seeing keep happening. Doesn't matter how much the hardcore community complains.
Manny vs Algeri is going to be the nail in the coffin if the numbers are low and Arum and company start singing a sad song...that's gonna mean the money from them Chinese casino ain't cutting it.
It matters little if the PPV does low numbers. Why do think its in Macau? Because the casinos there pay absurd amounts of money for him. Remember, Macau is about 20x bigger than Vegas in regards to how much money they make. It's insane the cash they get. So if the PPV does 300,000 buys or whatever, it really doesn't matter when the casinos are paying $20m or more in low taxed cash. Arum isn't dumb.
Furthermore they Top Rank were campaigning the $5.00 buys against the sheer population of China which they said would make Manny's foray into his then upcoming fight with Rios the highest paid athlete. What significant financial news came out of that...
Really has nothing to do with nothing but they probably didnt make a whole lot because the deal with that was it was only available through steam on smart phones and tablets. They don't have TV PPV set up in China. They couldn't even order it on a PC, it had to go through a special app in a phone/tablet, and as far as I know that was the first time anything like that has ever happened in China.
