A Birmingham woman who was fired from her teaching job at a Madison Heights Catholic high school after authorities accused her of having sex with a 15-year-old male student is facing new charges.
Kathryn Ronk, 29, of Birmingham was charged last week by Madison Heights authorities with five counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct – each carrying a potential life sentence. The charges stemmed from a complaint filed by the 15-year-old’s parents and officials at Bishop Foley High School, where had been a Spanish teacher.
Macomb County authorities have tacked on new charges, and Ronk was arraigned Wednesday in two different courts – one in Shelby Township and the other in Sterling Heights, the Detroit Free Press reports.
The new allegations accuse Ronk of having sex with the student in her parked vehicle on a Sterling Heights street and in the teen’s home in Macomb Township. In addition to the Oakland County charges filed after the Madison Heights police investigation, Ronk now also faces:
• One count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct (Sterling Heights court)
• Two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct (Shelby Township court)
• Sexually abusive activity (Shelby Township court)
• Selling or furnishing alcohol to a minor (Shelby Township court)
A personal bond of $100,000 was set during the arraignments in district courts in Shelby Township and Sterling Heights. Attorney James Thom, who represents the former teacher, told The Oakland Press Ronk has been cooperative, is not a danger to the community and is not a flight risk.
In the initial Madison Heights investigation, police alleged Ronk engaged in sexual intercourse and other sexual acts with the student from early January to April 30, sometimes in her classroom during school days.
Bishop Foley High School fired Ronk, who was finishing her first year teaching at the school, shortly after the allegations were made public. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit, headquartered in Madison Heights, also issued a statement saying that “such allegations are disconcerting and are treated with the utmost seriousness.”
Ronk is married and has no children, Madison Heights authorities said.
