Seattle crime rates are also declining because a lot of crimes are going unreported as most people have learned that nothing will happen when they call to report the majority of non-violent crimes.
I will totally agree that Seattle is one of the least violent, safest big cities around.
However being a current resident of Downtown Seattle, and having traveled to dozens of different cities in the US I can say that some of the hotspots downtown like the Pike - Pine corridor or 3rd Yesler are some of the most squalid places I have seen in the country.
Yeah I live and work downtown too man, it's not bad. I'm going to have to disagree with your last sentence, I'd agree that compared to most of the rest of Seattle those spots and a few others are kinda run down, but as far as other big cities go and I've been to a lot too, nah not even close. I used to catch the bus on 3rd and Pine at 2-3am nightly when I lived in Interbay a few years back, never once felt unsafe or threatened. Usually just some knuckleheads hanging around and/or selling drugs. I'd see a few fights here and there between said groups of knuckleheads, that's about it.
I wouldn't disagree with your first paragraph at all but if it's like that in Seattle just think how bad it is in other big cities that actually have violent crime problems when it comes to non violent ones not being reported.

Exactly. The direct result of all the latest DOJ oversight and persecution of the SPD is the officers are being instructed to ignore these high liability high risk for litigation nonviolent crimes. That is why it goes unreported, and this free for all environment eventually leads to violent felonies and major crimes. Last year the city was crying for the area to be cleaned up.
Remember the concierge who was assaulted in westlake and the uproar? The publics frustration had reached the boiling point. People demanded westlake was cleaned up. It was temporarily cleaned up for christmas. Now the cycle continues once again.
You can't demand clean safe streets without allowing the officers to do their jobs. Its one or the other. The SPD is already the most undesirable force in western washington because all officers know this. Its no wonder the best officers choose to take higher paying jobs in the renton, kent, kirkland, redmond, bellevue etc areas.

I mean when I have been in other places around the country I have definitely felt way more at risk, but the type of crime that happens in those places is most often not really threatening in nature. I've head a few run ins where things escalated but I've learned to walk away so as to not catch the AIDS haha.
But I mean I've see everything from people having sex right up against a building, dudes just shitting on the sidewalk with not a care in the world (lots of dudes shitting really -that could be the worst problem lol), people openly using needles, countless drugs deals - all with cops literally yards away doing nothing. Even when I was in Camden, or Stockton, or Memphis, I certainly felt more at risk personally but i've never seen anything like the blatant lawless nature of 3rd and Yesler.
I'm not scared of downtown seattle, its pretty safe. But its an undesirable area to shop compared to bellevue which isnt out of the way at all. What I'm saying is let the police do their jobs. Putting cameras on cops, demanding they are punished more harshly than citizens, scrutinizing their every word and action is ridiculous and will only decay the downtown core rapidly as crime continuously escalates unabated.

It does go both ways though.
When I was younger I got jumped by this older guy after a road rage incident. After the police broke it up the cops were accusing me of being drunk, drinking and driving, obstructing, assault, etc.
I was trying to plead my case about being attacked and the cop told me to stop talking or he would arrest me. Meanwhile they were taking statements from guy who attacked me as the witness to my purported crimes. So I tried to get another cop on the scene to listen to my case and the asshole cop threw me to the ground and arrested me for assault.
If it wasn't for a concerned citizen who had been watching the whole event calling the police station on my behalf to check in I might have been charged for a bunch of shit made up by an asshole cop and corroborated by a punk ass old man.
That is one incident but the overwhelming majority of my interactions with cops have all been negative.
Most of that has to do with how lax Seattle is compared to other cities when it comes to the homeless and the such and I wouldn't disagree on that at all. Off top the only place I've seen worse than Seattle when it comes to that shit, literally and figuratively, is parts of SF and Skid Row in LA. NYC damn near as a whole was much, much worse with that type of stuff until the mid 90s when they more or less started locking up everyone for anything of that sorts but that will never happen in Seattle for various reasons.
Did you really just say Bellevue isn't out of the way at all? Maybe not for you because you work there. How many people do you know who go to Bellevue just for the fuck of it? I know lots of people from both up north and down south of Seattle that come here all the time to just hang out and go about the city for a day out. Shut the fuck up Butcher lol.

That area has been like that well before any of that dude lol.
And no, no amount of policing will ever make that area totally clean or crime free. That's just how big cities go and even if it did the element of all that will just move somewhere else in the city.

I fucking hate shopping in downtown Bellevue. I'd much rather deal with "aggressive pan handling" in Seattle then walking around rich snobs! I'll shop at a random Fred Meyer before Bellevue. Maybe Crossroads mall in Bellevue (haven't been there in hella long though).
There's some good food in Bellevue though. Outside of that, only go there for Overlake hospital (good doctors).
