Teenager receives $700,000 to settle suit over shooting by cop
published by Tom Sullivan on Sat, 2014-04-12 20:14

South suburban Country Club Hills will pay $700,000 to settle a federal lawsuit claiming a police officer wrongfully shot a teenager who then spent 14 months in jail before he was found not guilty of attempted murder.

Abeid Armour was 17 when a Country Club Hills police officer shot into a car Armour was driving on July 24, 2010, the lawsuit said. Armour was struck with two bullets.

The officer, John Silas, stopped to investigate a group of young men — including Armour — who were gathered in a parking lot near Pulaski and 183rd. Silas shot Armour when he tried to drive away in a Monte Carlo, said Armour’s attorney Brendan Shiller.

Silas falsely claimed Armour tried to run over him, Shiller said.

On Sept. 15, 2011, Armour was found not guilty of attempted murder of a police officer.

I am sure that there are some good cops out there but human nature leads me to believe that absolute power corrupts, absolutely. a man that has little to no accountability for their actions gon go buckwild, IMO

Was the cop from this story even punished in any way (beyond paid time off after the shooting)? prolly not. seems as if every fucking shooting ends up being justified....who investigates and justifies it? oh yeah, the police dept investigate themselves and clear the shooter...wtf?

all cop interactions need to be video taped. Citizens should have the absolute right to tape cops, whether they are being detained or as a bystander. on top of this, cops should also be subject to harsher penalties for their actions (in terms of abuse of power, terrorizing the community and abuse of public trust). all video errythng would help straiten out a lot of bs but we need to have them accountable for their actions.

citizens shouldn't have to live in fear of the govt servants that WE pay for!

Yeah, that doesn't work AT ALL. What happens is the police more often than not will be instructed to ignore petty crimes that have a high liability and little positive outcome when enforced. For instance hand to hand drug transactions and aggressive pan handling and loitering; where a person is arrested and back on the street in hours. The cops ignore it to prevent potential litigation and disciplinary punishment and petty crime increases exponentially. This is exactly what has happened in Seattle and many many cities across America.

Ask yourself, would you rather have a couple busted heads now and then and clean crime free commercial and residential communities. Or would you rather have a passive reactive police force who stand idly by as conditions deteriorate and its too late; you can no longer safely shop or go out in your neighborhood for fear of personal injury or property damage. Those are the two options as has been proven time and time again.

Either let the police force do their jobs, or let criminals have the advantage.

Totally unrelated but I once saw a dude get so angry right before a bar fight that he was screaming and crying the whole time and beat the living shit out of the other dude. Top 10 weirdest things I've ever witnessed. He was crying like someone just told him his mom died or something.
lmao ive seen that same type of shit happen lol

I refuse to go to the westlake core and pike pine areas until it is cleaned up. The westlake area is decimated
Who would shop there when you can shop in bellevue. Free parking and an infinitely better environment to be in.

Like seriously though, outside of Butcher's blatant attempt at trolling (that maybe has a smidgen of truth), while Seattle is a big city and shit happens in big cities even in the worst parts of the downtown area chances are nothing is going to happen to you even at 3am. I mean Seattle overall has always been a safe city and compared to the 80s through 90s crimes in general is way down. Anyone who tells you different doesn't know what the fuck they are talking about.

27 years of data: Seattle crime rate sharply declining « Social Capital Review

Murder is about the same because for as long as I can remember this city has always been in the ballpark range of mid 20s murders a year give or take a few. And lets be real, out here at least 1/2 of those are usually domestic or some crazy fucker stabbing some random person, we do not have a lot of gang/drug related murders like other comparable sized cities tend to.
