Jahvid Best suing NFL, Riddell over concussions | ProFootballTalk

Former Lions running back Jahvid Best’s NFL career was a brief one after a series of concussions forced him off the field in November 2011.

Best was never able to get back to action, leading to his release last year and a role coaching at the University of California. There’s also been talk about reviving his career on the track, but Best’s not totally done with the NFL.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Best has filed suit against the league in Wayne County, Michigan alleging that the NFL was aware of the risks of head injuries suffered by players but didn’t do enough to protect players from getting them. Best also named helmet manufacturer Riddell as a defendant in the suit, which seeks unspecified “economic and noneconomic damages.”

“He was disabled from playing football due to the concussions. That’s all I’m really going to say,” Best’s attorney said, via Dave Birkett of the Free Press.

Birkett adds that the Lions are not part of the suit because Best, who also suffered concussions that caused him to miss his final games while he was playing for Cal, has a separate workman’s compensation claim pending against the team. The team declined to comment on either the suit or the claim.

maybe this should go into a new thread, but fuck making one over this shit

Missouri All-American edge rusher Michael Sam told teammates earlier this season he is gay, and he will become the first openly gay NFL player later this year.
ESPN's Adam Schefter spoke with one NFL executive who said "this young man is courageous." Obviously this is uncharted territory for the NFL level, but Sam apparently told his collegiate teammates in the summer of 2013 and they supported him, even keeping it a secret from the media. Sam was a very productive college player, but likely is a mid-to-late round selection due to his limitations and lack of multiple pass rush moves. "I’m not naïve," Sam said. "I know this is a huge deal and I know how important this is. But my role as of right now is to train for the combine and play in the N.F.L." The timing is important, as we are only two weeks away from the NFL Combine.

Eight NFL executives and coaches anticipate a "significant" draft-day plunge for Missouri OLB Michael Sam after revealing that he is homosexual.
The execs and coaches believe NFL locker rooms are "not prepared to deal with an openly gay player," and decision makers fear a "publicity circus" for the team that selects Sam. "At this point in time it's still a man's man game," said one player personnel assistant. "To call somebody a [gay slur] is still so commonplace." Rotoworld draft maven Josh Norris believes Sam has fourth- to seventh-round tape. "I just know with this going on this is going to drop him down," added one veteran scout. "There's no question about it. It's human nature. Do you want to be the team to quote-unquote 'break that barrier?'"

From watching his highlight tape, seems like a good player. If he's gay then he's gay but he should keep that to himself. I believe in don't ask don't tell. Admitting that he's sexually attracted to men and being in the locker room with naked men might not work out too well (see Kwame Harris, he admitted to looking at everyone's ding dong and comparing them).

Now he's going to lose dollars, drop in the draft, plus he has to think about all the attention he's going to bring to his team about being openly gay, then his teammates will have to answer millions of questions. N.F.L. teams may just go with another player so they don't have to deal with all the backlash with drafting an openly gay player.

In other words he's courageous and dumb at the sametime. Somethings are just better off kept to yourself.

M @mike SamFootball #respect bro. It takes guts to do what you did. I wish u nothing but the best
he won't face half the hardships that jackie robinson did back in the day. as long as his family accepts him and he can perform at the next level, he should be fine. somebody had to be first.
