this shit got the fiends out looking for this shit

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A powerful street drug that killed notable actor Philip Seymour Hoffman is making a comeback in Maryland and police say it’s contributing to a number of crimes in Anne Arundel County.

Rochelle Ritchie has the alarming details and how police are fighting back.

This new blend of heroin has killed 37 people across Maryland already this year and the number of violent crimes and drug use is only expected to get worse unless law enforcement officials find a way to stop it.

A deadly venom is making its way through the state of Maryland, taking dozens of lives as it goes.

“It’s a problem on many levels. We are experiencing it in Anne Arundel County and regionally,” said Lt. T.J. Smith.

It’s being called the killer heroin by the DEA. It’s mixed with a high level of fentanyl and has killed 37 people across the state.

“It’s been described as anywhere from 10-100 times as potent as regular heroin so you have people using this drug that aren’t used to this type of kick and it’s causing overdoses,” said Smith.

This new kind of heroin doesn’t have to be injected to give addicts the same high or even kill them. It’s absorbed through the skin so paramedics are now having to take extra caution when dealing with emergency drug calls.

Where the deals are getting the fentanyl is unclear. It’s often used to diminish the pain in cancer patients. In the last year, Anne Arundel County has been hit with four cases of heroin laced with fentanyl and the crave for a new high means a desperation to fund an addiction.

“We’ve talked about BGE, copper thefts at their sites, at Verizon sites, ATT sites,” said Smith. “These are heroin addicts.”

Police are certainly eager to take down the drug dealers but say this isn’t a problem you can arrest your way out of.

“We’re trying to prevent people from using it. We’re trying to educate people that are using it and arrest those that are bringing it into the communities,” said .

Heroin is capable of causing liver and heart disease. In 2006, hundreds of people from Chicago to Philadelphia died after injecting the drug.

Drug authorities say addicts often do not know the heroin is laced with fentanyl.

I blame pills. Namely oxys. It seems like everyone I know thats a few years younger than me (im 31) is either a recovering junkie or current one. I remember taking hydros and shit everyonce in a while but my age group never got deep into opiates. I swear the doctors started going crazy prescribing hard opiates. I shattered my wrist 10+ years ago and had to basically beg for hydros. But I know folks that got oxy scripts for way less. It's hard to afford enough pills to support your habit, so you move to heroin.

Also the "coolness" of lean and even pills has helped. This is all from an outsider looking in tho. I've never been deep into opiates and cut out friends that do.

it's about 200 a gram for heroin out in Toronto.
Ya I heard super high prices like that before but just am now realizing people shoot milligrams of it, so a gram of heroin cant really be compared to gram of powder price wise. i had no clue the amounts people use.

I think you (and GTS) hit it on the head with the oxys, when i was in grade 9 tonnes of kids were on that hillbilly heroin. I just always thought it was the other way around and oxys were cheaper.

Lean is pretty scarce out here despite so much shit being OTC. Up here you can mainly just OD on caffeinated T3s and 4s lmao

I wouldnt even mind trying some lean for the fuck of it, cant lie lol no oxys or heron tho that's for damn sure.

Hmmm I don't know, maybe it's just me but if a drug was actively killing that many people (more so than it usually does I guess) I wouldn't go looking for it, I'd be trying to avoid it personally.

Also stuff like this just makes it that much harder for people who actually need certain drugs, like fentanyl, to get it. Which is a shame. No need for people with end stage cancer, etc to be in extreme pain until the day they die because some dope heads are dropping dead from it left and right.

I think with your generation and the one below a lot of the stigma for heroin is gone because they don't shoot it up, at least for starters, and snort it. Snorting stuff has much less of a negative social cue than shooting stuff, even among people that do a lot of drugs.

That seems to be the case here in the Seattle area at least.

I can't even count the number of friends and people I know that have been addicted to oxy's and whatever else opioid, myself included at one time (not oxy's though). Shit is ridiculous.

But yeah when I was a teenager early 20s I never really seen heroine, these days it's common seeing people smoke that shit on a regular basis.

I've always been down to do drugs my whole life. Hella drugs. But there's three drugs I just never wanted to fuck with. Heroin, crack or meth. I always associated that shit with junkies. I'll stay up all night snorting coke tho lol.
