Athletics declined OF Chris Young's $11.0 million option for 2014.
He'll get a $1.5 million buyout instead. Young batted only .200/.280/.379 for the A's after being acquired last offseason and has seen his OPS dip for three straight years. He's just 30 years old, though, so someone will take a shot on him in hopes he can regain his 20/20 form.
Athletics declined C Kurt Suzuki's $8.5 million option for 2014.
Suzuki played well down the stretch for the A's when given a chance, but he hit only .232/.290/.337 overall this season. Still, he's well-regarded as a receiver and won't have trouble netting a nice deal from someone this winter.
Athletics exercised OF Coco Crisp's $7.5 million option for 2014.
It was a formality after Crisp posted his first ever 20/20 season and then batted .389/.455/.611 in the ALDS. Crisp's agent, Steve Comte, has spoken to the A's about a long-term deal, though it's not clear if there's any momentum toward an agreement. Oakland might have some trepidation given Crisp's age (34) and past injury issues.
Athletics exercised LHP Brett Anderson's $8 million option for 2014.
Anderson posted a 6.04 ERA over another injury-plagued 2013 campaign, but his upside makes him worthy of an $8 million gamble. There's been some speculation that the A's could trade him, but he'll be part of someone's rotation in 2014.
all smart moves, IMO
