SERGIO MARTINEZ: "A FIGHT WITH MIGUEL...THE ONLY OUTCOME I COULD SEE WOULD BE A LATE KO OF COTTO"
By Percy Crawford | October 14, 2013
"I'm am interested in fighting only big fights and a fight with Miguel would be a grand event...I thought Cotto did what he was supposed to do and was completely dominant versus an opponent who was hand picked for him...It would be a very tough fight as Cotto always comes very prepared, but the only outcome I could see would be a late KO of Cotto," stated middleweight king Sergio Martinez, who shared his thoughts on a potential showdown with multi-division world champion Miguel Cotto. Check it out!
PC: How are you doing, Sergio? You getting better physically?
SM: I feel great. My rehab has been excellent and I have been going back to the gym to do light cardio and getting myself re-acclimated to getting back into working out daily.
PC: Obviously the talk of the boxing world is a Martinez/Cotto fight. Is that something that you are interested in?
SM: I'm am interested in fighting only big fights and a fight with Miguel would be a grand event.
PC: Did you have a chance to watch Miguel Cotto's fight against Delvin Rodriguez, and if so, what did you think of his performance?
SM: I thought Cotto did what he was supposed to do and was completely dominant versus an opponent who was hand picked for him.
PC: Do you think Freddie Roach made a difference in Cotto, or that he just had the right opponent in front of him?
SM: Freddie Roach is an amazing trainer, but I believe Cotto had the right opponent in front of him.
PC: Stylistically, how do you see a fight between you and Miguel Cotto playing out?
SM: It would be a very tough fight as Cotto always comes very prepared, but the only outcome I could see would be a late KO of Cotto.
PC: Would that be a fight contested at 160 if it were to happen?
SM: That would be up to my team to negotiate.
PC: Another guy you recently faced just got what some would consider a generous decision. Do you think Bryan Vera defeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.?
SM: I believe Bryan Vera did enough to win that fight. It is unfortunate what happened because that win could've been life changing for Vera.
PC: Obviously Chavez Jr. has dedication problems to the sport. At this point, do you think he could correct those problems or is it too late in your opinion?
SM: He can correct them and can be a future champion, but he needs the proper guidance and needs to take the sport seriously.
PC: When are you targeting your comeback, Sergio?
SM: My plan is to come back the earliest in April.
PC: Thanks for your time. I wish you a very speedy recovery and ring return. Is there anything else you want to add?
SM: I want to thank my fans for all of their continued support and next year will be a very big year for me, my company Maravillbox, and Team Maravilla. Thank you.
