ok i just started using ebay n got a question...

a few days ago i placed a bid on an item that already had 1 bid...i placed my bid at $7.00... the auction ends in a few hours and i just noticed that the other bidder has placed 6 bids today all increasing by .50cents...but he only bid up to $7.00, my exact bid...

now my question is, why would he bid just up to my bid and not higher?
am i missing something?

also, for me to win will it be smart to place my highest bid at the last minute?

okay, that makes sense. but what would explain him matching my exact bid of $7.00..shouldnt it have incresed to atleast $7.50? or has it incresed to that and its just not showing me?

The auction started at a minimum amount. His highest bid was $6.50. you made your highest bid $7.00
If his highest bid was only $5.00 and you still bid $7.00, the current bid would be $5.50. What Im saying is its an automatic thing on ebays side.

As far as the last minute thing goes, you can definitely do that. Depending what it is, someone may still out bid you with the same strategy.

so your saying the bid would only increase .50 cents if he had outbid me with any amount?

then why is the bid still $7.00 after he placed 6 bids today all increasing by .50 cents but only up to the amount of $7.00

The other bidder could have just been upping his bid in small increments to see how much it would take to get near the highest big, without bidding too high.

He might be trying to put in a bid right at the end if he knows how high your current bid is.

yes thats a good theory but wouldnt he only be able to find out the highest bid if he outbid me first? it still says im winning... i havnt placed a bid in 5 days so im hoping he just thinks i forgot about it.

hmmm.. kinda weird... okay if i raise my bid to $9 in the last minute just to be sure, and i do end up winning, will i have to pay the 9 or just 7? that being if he doesnt raise his bid

This is exactly what happened.

He kept increasing his bid by 50 cents (which is probably the minimum increase for that price range) and stopped increasing at 7$. Because you were the first one to bid 7 you still have the highest bid.

Current bid, not your high bid. So say you'd put in a max bid of 10$, but the bidding has only advanced to 7, he would only know the current bid (7) not the max bid (10).
