OAKLAND -- The A's outrighted shortstop Hiro Nakajima to Triple-A Sacramento — where the high-priced Japanese infielder already has been playing all season — and removed him from the 40-man roster Friday.
Nakajima had to be exposed to waivers to be outrighted, but it was a fairly safe move for Oakland, which signed the 30-year-old shortstop to a two-year, $6.5 million contract in the off-season. Nakajima, who suffered a hamstring injury in spring training and lost the starting shortstop job to Jed Lowrie, has yet to play in the major leagues.
The A's likely made the move to clear a roster spot for the purposes of improving their catching depth. With John Jaso to miss at least the next three weeks and possibly the rest of the regular season with concussion issues, the A's desperately need to improve their minor league catching depth.
Nakajima, who is hitting .282 with four home runs and 26 RBIs for Sacramento in 75 games, was not in the River Cats' lineup Friday night.
