Khan: I’m one fight away from Mayweather fight; I’m moving to 147
May 5th, 2013 | Post Comment

floyd mayweather jr boxing amir khan By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan has given up on his idea of trying to avenge his losses to Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson at 140. Instead, Khan is now moving up to welterweight straightaway and will be looking to fight IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander in his next fight provided that Alexander gets past British challenger Lee Purdy this month in their fight on May 18th at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Khan told BoxNation last night “I am getting big for the weight…I could be one fight away from the Mayweather fight if things go to plan. To beat Floyd you have to beat him at his own game…you have to use speed. Of all the fighters who can face him I would have a chance because of my speed. I have got the speed and the ability that can cope with him.”

This is hilarious. Khan barely scrapped by 2nd tier fighter Julio Diaz last Saturday night in winning a questionable 12 round decision in Khan’s home country of the UK, and now Khan is looking past a fight with Devon Alexander. Oh boy, talk about your deluded fighters.

Why does Khan do this to himself? He seems like he’s always looking into the future for fights that have little chance of ever taking place, and the Mayweather fight is a prime example of that.

Khan will probably get the Devon Alexander fight, because Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer was talking about that last night in an interview with BoxNation, but that’s probably about as far as it goes for Khan unless he suddenly develops a greater punch resistance.

Alexander is clearly a better puncher than Julio Diaz, and if he knows he has an opponent with a fragile chin like Khan facing him, he’s going to really go after him in a big way.

It looks like Golden Boy is trying to set up the Khan-Mayweather fight the easy way by having Khan bypass the dangerous rematches with Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia.

I guess I can’t blame them for doing that because if they throw Khan in with one of them in his next fight, they won’t be able to cash out with Khan in a Mayweather fight because Garcia would likely knock Khan out again, and Peterson would beat him too.

So by steering Khan around the dangerous threat in the form of Peterson and Garcia, Golden Boy seems to be pegging their hopes on Khan being able to get past Devon Alexander. Good luck. Alexander may not be the puncher that Danny Garcia is, but I think he’s a better fighter than him, and I think he’s better than Lamont Peterson too.

I see this backfiring on Golden Boy with Khan getting knocked out by Alexander or at the very least taking a real thrashing that he won’t soon forget. Alexander can flat out fight and I don’t think Khan is going to do well with him, even if they dragged Alexander over to the UK.

Mayweather: I’ve got several names I’m thinking about for next fight
May 5th, 2013 | Post Comment

Mayweather Guerrero Mayweather vs. Guerrero robert guerrero floyd mayweather jr boxing By Dan Ambrose: WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his father Floyd Sr. are saying there are several names they’re considering for his next fight in September.

They’re not saying who the guys are, but it does like WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez isn’t on the list due to his close, controversial decision win over WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout.

Mayweather said at the post-fight press conference last night that he saw the Canelo-Trout fight as very, very close and he didn’t agree with the lopsided scores that were given to Canelo for the in Texas.

In other words, one gets the impression that Mayweather feels that Canelo still has unfinished business against Trout before he’ll be looking for a fight with him.

Mayweather said “I’ve got several names I’m thinking about for my next fight…If I were to choose Canelo and then beat Canelo… I thought Canelo’s fight with Trout was a lot closer than they had it. If me and Canelo were to fight and he took a loss, they’re [the fans and media] are going to come up with another opponent.”

The judges’ lopsided scores given to Canelo for his win over Trout didn’t help him with getting the Mayweather fight because it looks as if Mayweather is invalidating the scoring of the fight by the judges, which you can’t blame him because it looked to a lot of fans like Trout had done enough to win or at the very least get a draw. So the judges gave Canelo the victory, but it’s really being recognized by Mayweather as a conclusive enough win for him to bother with him.

It’s a controversial win. If Golden Boy Promotions is smart, they’ll realize that Canelo has to fight Trout again and beat him without controversy in a fight held outside of Texas and without the open scoring if they want Mayweather to start showing interest in fighting him because he clearly doesn’t recognize Canelo’s win over Trout as being a conclusive one for him to want to fight him. That’s the thing about Mayweather. He doesn’t fight guys that are being followed around by the stench of a controversial decision like Canelo is with his win over Trout.

As far as who Mayweather will end up fighting in September, I see it coming down to one of the following guys:

Danny Garcia
Lucas Matthysse
Lamont Peterson
Devon Alexander
Miguel Cotto

It’s going to be one of those guys for sure. It won’t be Canelo, it won’t be Amir Khan, and it definitely won’t be Robert Guerrero.

Marquez: Mayweather too good for Canelo
May 5th, 2013 | Post Comment

Mayweather Guerrero Mayweather vs. Guerrero saul alvarez robert guerrero juan manuel marquez floyd mayweather jr boxing By Dan Ambrose: The great Mexican boxing warrior Juan Manuel Marquez doesn’t think WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has the skills or the experience to beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. right now, and thinks the 22-year-old Canelo needs more experience before he faces Mayweather.

Marquez said to esnewsporting.com “I think for Canelo it’s a tough fight because Mayweather is the best fighter in the world and he has got great defense and is a good, fast punch. I think Canelo needs more experience for a fight with Mayweather. I don’t like to fight [Mayweather] again because everyone knows what happened in 2009.”

The problem is if the fight were to happen, and I don’t think it will due to Canelo’s 25 pound weight advantage over the 147 pound Mayweather, it won’t take place in September against the Mexican.

Canelo would be walking into the fight off of his questionable win over former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout, a fight that took place in Texas with open scoring with a tired looking Canelo only fighting hard for about 1 minute of every 3-minute round. Canelo wouldn’t beat Mayweather fighting like that, and the fight WOULD NOT take place in Texas, and it the open scoring, which clearly helped Canelo in a huge way, wouldn’t be used.

If the WBC tried that garbage on Mayweather, he’d walk away from the fight. The WBC wouldn’t even try to pull that bit on Mayweather.

The 147 pound Mayweather isn’t going to fight the 172 pound Canelo if he knows he’s going to be out-weighed by 25 pounds. If Canelo and Golden Boy Promotions really want that fight they need to be talking about coming down to 147 to make it happen and with a strict rehydration limit of only 154 with the condition to where if Canelo can’t make the 154 pound limit on the night of the fight, the fight would be off.

The secondary weigh-in would have to be within one hour of the fight to ensure that Canelo doesn’t suddenly rehydrate at the last minute and still end up walking into the ring at 170+. If you have the secondary weigh-in the morning off the fight then it’s still possible to pump in 20 pounds of water weight very quickly, so that’s no good.

The secondary weigh-in would have to be within minutes of the fight so that there couldn’t be a quick pumping in of fluids. If Canelo wants to fight a guy that’s much lower in weight than him like Mayweather than he needs to boil down and fight Mayweather at the same weight on the night of the fight. He can’t be dehydrating down to 147 and then quickly rehydrating up to 172 or whatever the night of the fight. Mayweather doesn’t want to fight at light heavyweight and he shouldn’t have. I don’t see Canelo fighting guys 25 pounds heavier than him.

If mayweather fight on sep14th it will have to be against a mexican due to the date. Since its mexicos independence day weekend. If he doesn't fight a Mexican the Ppv numbers will be alot lower than expected since Marquez fights that night aswell.

Danny Garcia: Canelo is too big for Mayweather Jr.
May 6th, 2013 | Post Comment

Mayweather Canelo Mayweather vs. Canelo saul alvarez floyd mayweather jr danny garcia boxing By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia sees WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is being too big in terms of weight to be facing WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the near future.

Garcia points put that Mayweather fights at around 150, while Canelo rehydrates up to 171 lbs and more for his fights at junior middleweight. Garcia sees that as being too much weight for Mayweather to deal with.

The only way Garcia sees a possible Mayweather-Canelo fight as a possibility is if Canelo can dehydrate down to 147 to fight Mayweather at his weight instead of forcing Mayweather to come up in weight and then gaining a huge advantage in weight by rehydrating up to light heavyweight [170+] to bull Mayweather around the ring.

Garcia said to Fighthub.com “Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a welterweight. He fights at 150 lbs. [after rehydrating] He’s not a 154 pound fighter. Canelo rehydrates to around 171 lbs., but if Canelo can make 147, it would be good. I will take Floyd to win.”

That’s a big ask for Canelo to boil down to 147 lbs to fight Mayweather. I don’t think Canelo would ever agree to that. He would likely try and pull his weight and look to get Mayweather to fight him at a catchweight of 151 or 150, and then rehydrate up to 171 or 172.

The only way it would work is if Canelo came down to 147, not 150, and then agreed to a rehydration limit to keep him from rehydrating back up to 170+. That would be pointless for Mayweather to fight Canelo if he’s still able to rehydrate up to light heavyweight and walk into the ring weighing over 170.

There are weight classes for a reason. If Canelo wants to fight mostly welterweights then he needs to find a way to move back down in weight instead of dragging welterweights up in weight and then enjoying a tremendous weight advantage like the ones you see former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. enjoying for his fights.

If Canelo would mix in some of his fights against smaller guys with fights against guys in the super middleweight division, light heavyweight or cruiserweight divisions, then it wouldn’t such a big deal because he wouldn’t look like someone that is just looking for lighter guys. But we’re not seeing Canelo fight middleweights, super middleweights, light heavyweights or cruiserweights. He’s fighting light welterweights and welterweights.

Even if Canelo fought at 160, the guys he’d be facing still would be around the same weight as him, possibly smaller. WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin comes into his bouts less than 170 lbs, so Canelo would have a weight advantage over him but not much of one.

Khan Presents a Unique Challenge to Mayweather
May 6th, 2013 | Post Comment

Mayweather Khan Mayweather vs. Khan floyd mayweather jr boxing amir khan By Craig Hilton: A potential fight between Amir Khan and Floyd Mayweather has been subject to growing media attention and speculation. Amir Khan has elevated himself up the world rankings to a position where a fight between Floyd and himself is now becoming likely.

Amir seems to have been talking up a fight between the pair for a few years now and his dream contest is fast turning into reality. This clash of styles should be hyped over one significant factor: Amir Khan’s notoriously fast hand speed.

Floyd Mayweather has not contested fast puncher since his split decision victory over Oscar De La Hoya back in May 2007. Famed trainer, Freddie Roach, has often remarked upon Mayweather’s weakness against fighters with fast hands when promoting Amir Khan’s unique quickness. In the recent Mayweather vs. Guerrero All Access series, Robert Guerrero’s camp sought to threaten Mayweather by performing constant speed training on the double end bag in preparation for the fight. However, Guerrero did not deliver the degree of quickness required in order to make it a close encounter. In my opinion, Khan is one of the few fighters that endanger Mayweather with real mobility and rapidity.

Although Amir’s weak chin has been exposed on more than one occasion, Khan’s trainer, Virgil Hunter, is working with him to improve his defences in preparation for a move up in weight to one-hundred and forty-seven pounds. Khan was stunned by a few shots in his recent bout with Julio Diaz but showed a good automatic response by tying up when hurt and under pressure. Mayweather is not a big puncher in the Welterweight Division and often uses the full twelve rounds to dismantle his opposition. Therefore, Khan’s excellent stamina should allow him to express his skills against Floyd over the full scheduled distance.

Amir Khan is a swift mover with excellent footwork. This could hinder Floyd’s effectiveness at controlling the pace of the fight. Floyd Mayweather recently commented on his ability to make any fighter fight at his pace. However, he appeared to have some trouble controlling the dynamism of Ricky Hatton. Khan may be able to put Mayweather under a similar kind of pressure with speedy footwork and movement.

We all marvel at Mayweather’s defences – even at thirty-six years’ of age – but would they be so effective against a young, fast, volume puncher like Khan? Amir looks sensational when being the aggressor in fights, launching his charges from varied angles; would Mayweather’s Philly Shell defence and shoulder roll technique prove successful in thwarting such assaults? Mayweather would surely have to assume the role of aggressor in the bout as Khan has looked world class against counter-punchers that stand off him whilst on the back-foot. Amir dispatched Zab Judah in five rounds and stopped Paulie Malignaggi in eleven. It is also questionable whether Mayweather would be able to land sharp right hand leads and quick left hooks successfully against a tall, rangy mover like Khan.

I believe that a potential confrontation between Khan and Mayweather would prove highly entertaining. Although Amir Khan may not have all attributes necessary to beat Mayweather, his rapid hand speed and body movement surely present a unique challenge to him.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Brian Vera on August 3rd
May 5th, 2013 | Post Comment

Chavez Jr. vs. Vera Chavez Jr Vera julio cesar chavez jr boxing By Allan Fox: Middleweight contender Brian Vera (23-6, 14 KO’s) is saying he’ll be facing former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) on August 3rd in a venue still to be determined. The fight will be a catch-weight fight at 164 or 165 lbs.

Chavez Jr. says he’s going to be moving up to super middleweight and this is a fight that will get his feet wet to see how he does at this weight.

Whether he struggles or not, Chavez Jr. is going to have to make the move to 168 or 175 in the near future because boiling down from the 190s to get to 160 has got to be an incredibly difficult ordeal for Chavez Jr.

This isn’t really all that surprising that the 31-year-old Vera is getting the fight because we had recently heard that Chavez Jr’s team had decided not to face middleweight contender Darren Barker next.

Vera makes more sense because he’s arguably more suited to Chavez Jr’s brawling style compared to Barker, who has good boxing skills in addition to his excellent power.

Barker would no doubt have used Sergio Martinez’s recent win over Chavez Jr. as a blueprint in how to beat him. With Vera, he doesn’t have the ability to box even if he wanted to. He literally lives and dies by his ability to slug.

Vera said on his twitter: “Aug 3rd on HBO main event against Chavez jr #winning#shock the world.”

Vera has good power and he’s also a fighter that tends to put on a lot of weight after he rehydrates. However, he’s not going to be nearly as heavy as Chavez Jr. Depending on how Chavez Jr. handles the weight loss to get down to 165, this could be an easy for difficult fight for him.

Vera isn’t an easy out and he’s got a good right hand and he could give Chavez Jr. more problems than some of his past opponents like Andy Lee and Marco Antonio Rubio.

There u go Argentino. I told u Mayweather comes into the ring in the low to mid 150's dog. Most experts and other fighters in folks in boxing know that. We may not get the exact weight but obviously even Garcia knows that and i would take the word of a fellow boxer over some hating ass fan lol. Also like I been saying and now everyone is saying Canelo is way to big and needs to fight people his own size. Boxing needs to change their rules on that rehydration bullshit. Got Em!!

Fun fight, both coming off losses. Would be better if on regular HBO and not PPV though but the masses will buy.

Dan Rafael is reporting Pacquiao-Rios is good to go on November 24th in China.
Whoa not Alvarado?? Hmmm I like this fight better actually. This will be all out war and someone will be put to sleep. I am taking Rios on this one sorry. This on will probably retire Manny lol. Got Em!!
