Mayweather Guerrero Mayweather vs. Guerrero robert guerrero floyd mayweather jr adrien broner (Photo credit: Casino/Showtime) By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner, a close personal friend of Floyd Mayweather Jr., couldn’t help poking fun at the arrest of Mayweather’s next opponent Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, who earlier today was arrested for gun possession at the JFK airport in New York while preparing for a flight to Las Vegas, Nevada.

Broner, 23, said on his twitter: “Man, I really hope Robert “gotta gun” Guerrero [will] be OK. LOL.”

I imagine Guerrero will eventually be ok, but he’s got some serious charges hanging over his head as he prepares for his May 4th fight with Mayweather at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Guerrero was charged with illegally carrying with a firearm [pistol] in New York. That’s not all. Guerrero also had three, 15-round high capacity gun magazines with him in a case along with the pistol.

The good news it the Mayweather-Guerrero fight will still take place on May 4th. The bad news is Guerrero is going to have to untangle himself from this legal mess on May 15th.

Guerrero had a permit for the firearm, but the permit was for California, not New York. That’s a major problem, and perhaps he didn’t know the law. Of course, I’m not sure if ignorance of the law will work as a defense strategy. Who knows perhaps it will. Guerrero could get a slap on the hand for this.

Guerrero and Broner went at it on twitter last year when the two of them trash talked each other. Guerrero wanted to face Broner in a fight at welterweight. Broner, a lightweight, wasn’t willing to move up two divisions to take the fight.

Broner is moving up in weight now to take on WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi on June 22nd at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Maybe if Broner makes easy work of Malignaggi, he might be interested in staying at 147 and facing Guerrero. There’s really not too many other guys for Broner to fight at 147, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Golden Boy Promotions matches Guerrero and Broner up in 2013.

Khan thinks some of his critics are jealous of him

Khan Diaz Khan vs. Diaz julio diaz amir khan By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) thinks some of his critics are jealous of his talents, because he doesn’t understand how they can criticize him when he’s beaten guys like Zab Judah, Marcos Maidana and Paulie Malignaggi.

Khan said to thesun.co.uk “I don’t know why some fans and a few other fighters have a go at me. Jealously maybe? But I’ve learned to live with it and all that kind of sneaky criticism no longer bothers me.”

I bet. I think the criticism has to bother Khan, as it would anyone because it’s not just coming from a few fans. We’re talking massive amounts of fans are criticizing Khan, and that suggests that they see holes in his game.

I don’t think it’s jealously from fans. I think some of them are put off by Khan’s self-confidence and his bragging about his talent.

Khan has been knocked out by Breidis Prescott and Danny Garcia, and he was beaten by Lamont Peterson. He’s lost two out of his last three fights, and his promoters at Golden Boy have put him in the cushy situation where he only has to defeat the aging former IBF lightweight champion Julio Diaz (40-7-1, 29 KO’s) next month in their fight on April 27th in Sheffield to get to the finals of Golden Boy’s 6-fighter tournament in December.

The other fighters – Lucas Matthysse, Lamont Peterson, Danny Garcia and Zab Judah – will be facing off in elimination bouts with the winner of the tourney facing Khan. In other words, those guys have the hard work, while Khan only has to fight the non-top 15 ranked Diaz to get to the finals.

Golden Boy has basically put Khan in the finals by having him fight what amounts to be another tune-up fight for him. That kind of thing puts boxing fans off and causes them to criticize Khan. It looks like Golden Boy is playing favorites by giving Khan a free ride to the finals.

Khan never attempted to avenge his loss to Prescott, and instead said it wasn’t worth it after Prescott was beaten by fellow Brit Kevin Mitchell by a 12 round decision. I saw the same fight and had Prescott winning 9 rounds to 3 over Mitchell. I still think Prescott would have won the fight had it not taken place in the UK. But ignoring the Prescott-Mitchell fight, Khan never even attempted to avenge the loss, and you have to wonder why.

Then there’s the controversy about Khan’s win over Maidana in 2010 in a fight where Khan was out on his feet, and taking heavy punishment from Maidana. The referee kept getting in the way of Maidana while he was trying to finish Khan off, and even took a point away from Maidana for him throwing an elbow that hit no one except the referee accidentally.

You can make a strong argument that with a referee that didn’t get in the way of Maidana while he was attempting to finish Khan off, we’d have seen Khan knocked out. If you look at rounds 10, 11 and 12 in the Khan-Maidana fight, it’s hard to understand why the referee kept pulling Maidana off of Khan while he was looking to stop him.

The referee is supposed to let the fighters work on the inside, even if it’s one-way action like it was after Khan got hurt. I think Khan would have been knocked out had it been a referee that let’s fighters work on the inside. Golden Boy really lucked out when that referee was assigned to the fight.

There’s the perception there among some boxing fans that Khan has had things given to him on silver platter due to his popularity that other less popular fighters don’t get. This obviously is something that leads to Khan getting criticized.

Mayweather documentary “30 days in May” to air on Showtime on Wednesday, April 3rd

By Allan Fox: WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr’s documentary titled “30 days in May” will be televised next Wednesday, April 3rd on Showtime. Check out the trailer. The documentary chronicles some of the recent events in Mayweather’s life, including the build-up to his May 4th title defense against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather recently signed a six-fight contract with Showtime/CBS that will make him huge money, but the pressure is on him to win these pay-per-view fights. Mayweather can’t afford to lose any of them, especially his first fight if he wants to keep making big money on PPV. The worst thing that could happen for Mayweather is for him to lose to Guerrero, and the continue losing to in his subsequent fights.

In his last bout a year ago against Miguel Cotto, Mayweather took a lot of punishment in winning a 12 round decision. He says he purposely went toe-toe with boxing fans in order to make it exciting for them. However, there are some boxing fans who feel that Mayweather had no other choice but to go brawl with Cotto because he didn’t have the mobility to box him the way he would have done had he been a little younger.

Mayweather is 36 now, he’s not as mobile as he used to be. He never used to trade with his opponents earlier in his career the way he’s doing it now.

Guerrero doesn’t have much power, but he is good at putting pressure on his opponents and throwing lots of shots to wear them down. It’s been working thus far for Guerrero because he hasn’t fought anyone the ability to move around the ring to foil his high pressure tactics, and it’ll likely work against Mayweather as well.

That doesn’t mean Guerrero will win the fight because Mayweather is good picking off shots and fighting on the inside, but it’s probably going to be just as tough a fight for Mayweather as his fight with Cotto.

Peterson vs. Holt – Damn Peterson put an old school ass whipping on Holt. Peterson vs. Matthysse will be an all action fight and the winner of this fight will be the best at 140lb and future winner of the GBP 140lb tournament in my eyes.. That is if these two don’t kill each other



Gary Russell Jr vs. another bum- Russell needs to step it up against top rated guys. Mickey vs. Russell Jr. is a fight I want for 2014.



B-Hop vs. Cloud- The old man once again schools a young lion and the fight was actually exciting good job B-Hop.



Tim Bradley vs. Ruslan Provodnikov - had to fight like a mindless brawler and get beat up to get some respect from the fans. Bradley is a warrior and I want to see Bradley vs. Marquez. I would love to see Ruslan vs. Rios or Alvarado.



GGG vs. another 154lb bum- When will the over hyped GGG actually fight a 160lber?? I’m still not sold on dude until he beats someone good at 160lb.



Alvarado vs. Rios 2- Great fight Mike you out boxed and hurt Rios in the rematch to earn your soul back. Bum -Bum Rios or Margarito 2.0 as I call him is what I said he was 2 years ago. He’s a face first brawler that can’t hit a moving target and he has no plan B. All Rios had to do was jab his way inside and go to the body more and he would’ve KO’ed Mike again. Broner would KO Rios with no problem at all, Rios is more lips service then skilled fighter. He needs to do less talking and more work on his craft. Will Bob Arum still feed Rios to Manny in September??



HBO vs. Showtime- I’m actually happy because this will force both promoters/channels to put on great match ups. HBO only cares about mindless brawlers, standing in front of each other throwing punches with no defense like two drunks in a bar fight. I’m a boxing fan I love brawls, but I like fighters that actually have boxing skills and use defense. I’m sick of HBO hyping up every mindless brawler they can, brawlers always gets exposed by guys with boxing skills plus their careers are short. Showtime has a chance to be the number one boxing channel they better make good fights



Jim Lampley- This dude is a piece of shit for real. It’s funny how this guy and most so-called boxing fans called Mayweather a coward three years ago when he asked for USDA testing, but now this guys is riding Donarie dick like he’s the one that started the extra testing ball rolling. Donarie has only been getting randomly tested for 8 months now too, it’s just funny hearing everyone talking about PED in boxing now, but three years when Floyd told everyone that a lot of boxers were on PED he was coward, making excuses, and ducking?? Mayweather vs. Ward- Floyd made few comments about him which was the truth by the way and Ward got so butt hurt that he can’t stop talking about Floyd. Then J Prince jumps in talking about how when he was Mayweather manager Floyd was selling tickets, but J Prince only made Ward and himself look dumb, because after Mayweather left Prince he’s the number one guy in boxing. J Prince looks like a dumb ass that’s why he didn’t say another word after Mayweather’s reply. Now Ward wants Chavez Jr on May 5th 2014?? Lol.. More proof that Floyd told the truth about Ward now he copying the Mayweather blue print to try and get his money up..



Canelo vs. Trout- I think Trout will outbox Canelo to win the fight 7-5 or 115-113, but just like Pernell Whitaker vs. Chavez Sr Trout will be robbed at the Alamo dome in TX. Canelo is too worried about his next fight or his first PPV. He better be focused on Trout because after winning that fight against Cotto, Austin will be better mentally because now he believes in himself more after beating Cotto in NY. Canelo better be on his A game. I still can’t believe he wanted a guarantee win or lose against Trout to fight Mayweather. Lol Canelo haven’t fought anyone yet to be making demands to the big fish of boxing. Mayweather was undefeated, headlined his own PPV, multi-division champion, and the number 1 P4P boxer and he made no demands to the Oscar when they fought. Canelo needs to beat Trout then think about what’s next.

The question you should be asking is when will a top 160 pound fighter step up and fight Golovkin?

Here are the facts:

First, Ishida has been a MW for the past three years. He's never been KO'd, went the distance against Paul Williams, Dmitry Pirog and of course KO'd James Kirkland. Is it a great win? Nope. But it was impressive showcase of Golovkin's power, who brutally KO'd a very durable fighter in 3 rounds. Plus, it was a stay busy fight on Europe before his June date.

Let's look at the opponents that turned down Golovkin:

-Felix Sturm - shameless ducked his mandatory fighter in GGG for 2 years. This is very well documented. It's been revealed he payed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the WBA to not fight him. source

-Daniel Geale - was stripped of the WBA title for not fighting Golvokin. source

-Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam - was ordered to fight Golvokin, didn't show up for the pure bid. source

-Macklin - Refused Golvokin two times now. Just a few days ago says he will not fight Golovkin on HBO in June because he needs a tune up (go to his twitter).

-Peter Quillin - turned down offer to fight Golovkin few months ago. Now he'll likely never get a chance since he's Golden Boy and stuck on Showtime, Golovkin's next fight or two at least will be on HBO.

-Rubio - Turned down Golovkin source

-Brian Vera - was rejected by HBO. source

-Sergio Martinez - his promoter says "who the fuck is Golovkin?" but has Sergio fight unknown UK fighter Martin Murray source -[B]Chavez jr.[/B] - says he's fi...rker-mexico-city-june-2013-boxing-news]source

-Proksa - Golovkin already beat him.

So this leaves few options for Golovkin. The best opponents are likely guys like Osumanu Adama, Sebastian Zbik, David Lemieux and Max Bursak. Maybe, and I hope, Daniel Geale steps up the plate.

I've literally never seen a guy, with HBO offering good money, get turned down by so many fighters. So he fights who he can.

Also that's funny about HBO only promoting mindless brawlers. Jermain Taylor, Andre Berto, Chad Dawson and Broner have all been highly promoted and hyped up by HBO, just to name a few. In fact for years all Al Haymon fighters were hyped up big time on HBO and we were forced many fights that no one really cared about.

well Valero was banned in the US for a long time because of his brain injury he suffered from a motorcycle accident. Even his fight against DeMarco was in Mexico. He was eventually granted a license in Texas, where he fought one time, but then got a DUI and some other trouble and was kicked out of the country.

The crazy bastard even said he'd fight Bernard Hopkins in June source. I don't think that is likely now with Golden Boy only doing Showtime fights for the time being (fight makes zero sense anyways).

Golovkin vs. Macklin possible for June

Golovkin Macklin Golovkin vs. Macklin matthew macklin gennady golovkin By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) and #2 WBC, #11 WBA, #14 IBF Matthew Macklin (26-4, 23 KO’s) are being talked about for a fight that will take place in June, according to Steve Kim. Macklin has been given an offer for the fight.

The word is he’s concerned about inactivity because he hasn’t fought since last September when he blew out Joachim Alcine in one round in a mismatch. Macklin has since had nose surgery to repair a problem with his nose.

Before that, Macklin hadn’t fought since being stopped in the 11th round in March of last year. The fight against Alcine was a mismatch going in and it’s not surprising that Macklin stopped that guy because he was blown out by the slow as molasses Alfredo Angulo in 1 round a couple years earlier.

What this means is that Macklin will have only fought once in 15 months by the time he enters the ring to face Golovkin in June, if he agrees to take the fight and I have serious doubts that Macklin will accept the fight.

Let’s face it; Macklin is made to order to Golovkin even if he runs for 12 rounds and he probably won’t do that. Macklin is just too hittable and Golovkin will make easy work him. However, Golovkin won’t destroy Macklin simply because of his inactivity.

Heck, it doesn’t matter how active Macklin is. He could fight every day of the year and he’ll still be destroyed by Golovkin in four or five rounds tops. The problem is Golovkin is just too powerful, too talented and too highly skilled for a guy of Macklin’s class.

I just hope Macklin doesn’t turn the fight down because it looks like he’s already been passed over for a shot at former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for June with him looking at facing Darren Barker instead. Macklin might as well take the fight with Golovkin and get a nice payday and take his lumps.

Chavez Jr. targeting Barker for 6/22 fight on Mexico

Chavez Jr. vs. Barker Chavez Jr Barker julio cesar chavez jr darren barker By Scott Gilfoid: With limited options for his next fight on June 22nd in Mexico, former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) is kicking around the idea of fighting British middleweight Darren Barker (25-1, 16 KO’s). Chavez Jr. likes Barker’s talent and sees him as a top level fighter that he’d be interested in facing in his tune-up fight to get him ready for a much more important rematch with WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez later on this year.

Barker himself is making a comeback of sorts after having injured his hip a year ago. Barker has fought twice since the injury healed against weak opposition. This will be a big step up for Barker if he gets selected for the fight.

Chavez Jr. may not be a highly skilled fighter at 160, but he’s a cruiserweight sized fighter that somehow is still able to melt down to 160 to fight at middleweight. I expect Chavez Jr. to win this fight on his size advantage alone to get a knockout.

Irish fighter Andy Lee was stopped last year by Chavez Jr. in a 7th round stoppage in El Paso, Texas. Lee didn’t have the mobility to stay out of range of the much heavier Chavez Jr. and he eventually got trapped against the ropes and blasted out. I see the same thing happening with Barker, who doesn’t move well around the ring. Barker is one of those stiff fighters that likes to fight on the outside, but who can’t move to avoid guys that can cut off the ring on him.

Chavez Jr. says he was thinking of facing Brian Vera or Matthew Macklin, but he’s ruled them out as potential opponents for one reason or another. Chavez Jr. says he has some other guys in mind for his June 22nd fight as well, but currently Barker is at the No. 1 position at this time.

It could be that he’s considered the most affordable guy with the kind of style that Chavez Jr. can do well against. It’s no secret that Barker has no real inside fighting skills to speak of, and Chavez Jr. can definitely exploit a guy like Barker in a big way, especially if Barker doesn’t have the sense to move around to keep from getting knocked out.

If Barker had a set of wheels he might give Chavez Jr. some problems in this fight, but unfortunately Barker is too stiff on his feet and he moves like he’s got rusty joints in his knees and hips. To beat a fighter as huge as the 190 pound Chavez Jr., Barker is going to have to become mobile overnight.

Maybe if he can get Andre Dirrell to spar with him for the training camp, Barker can copy some of the things that Dirrell uses to move around the ring and use that against Chavez Jr. But I don’t think it’s possible because it seems like a physical thing rather than Barker not having the training to move around the ring. You either have good foot speed or you don’t. Barker fights like he’s got his feet stuck in a bunch of quick drying cement, and can’t break loose.

Who has had the greater success against Floyd Mayweather?

Mayweather Guerrero Mayweather vs. Guerrero robert guerrero floyd mayweather jr By Craig Hilton: It’s difficult for any trainer to devise a strategy for beating Floyd Mayweather Junior (43-0) as he adjusts to his opponents’ every move. Recently, I’ve taken time to watch the most competitive Mayweather fights. I’d like to discuss his opponents’ level of success under four key areas: Jab, Combinations and Hand Speed; Head Movement; Footwork and Endurance.

Jab, Combinations and Hand Speed

It has been well documented that Mayweather’s style requires opponents to mount attacks with the jab. The jab keeps a counter puncher like Mayweather occupied, denying him time to think and counter as easily.
Most significantly, it creates gaps for body shots. Oscar De La Hoya (39-6) pressed Mayweather against the ropes with the jab in their huge fight, straightening him up for a swift combination. In the recent Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto (37-4) super fight, Cotto caused significant damage with his sturdy jab. Despite landing a few hard rights to the body, Cotto had more success with his jab than any other shot.

Although Jose Luis Castillo (64-11-1) didn’t offer such an effective jab than Oscar or Miguel, I believe he used a better combination of punches. In my opinion, opponents need combinations of two and three punches against Mayweather. Although it’s difficult to land all the shots contained within a combination, the challenger needs to use feints, fakes and one or two punches to land weighty blows to the body.

Castillo and Cotto were limited by their incapability to launch rapid shots; Oscar De La Hoya had faster hands by comparison and therefore had greater success when landing his combinations against Mayweather. However, Oscar wasted more shots; this squandering slackened his pace and output in those later rounds.

Head Movement

In my opinion, Jose Luis Castillo used effective head movement to avoid Mayweather’s shots. A slight dip of his shoulders kept Mayweather occupied and made him miss. After watching the recent Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2) vs. Juan Manuel Marquez (55-6-1) fight, it seems Manny has adopted a similar style of head movement. By comparison, Cotto’s head was motionless against Mayweather; Miguel was one-paced and seemed satisfied to walk Floyd towards the ropes and corners of the ring where he could establish his strength advantage. However, his lack of dynamism was his shortcoming as Mayweather was able to stand and pick looping right hooks around Cotto’s weaker back hand whilst in the centre of the ring. Cotto was most effective when he had Mayweather penned into the corners of the ring: he crouched low, smothering Floyd whilst throwing colossal shots to the head and body.

Footwork

It is common knowledge among trainers that you need to set a furious pace against a counter puncher; Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto failed to do this. Ricky Hatton (43-3) had more success in manoeuvring Floyd into uncomfortable positions but he didn’t have a jab, limiting his effectiveness in putting shots together. Jose Luis Castillo kept Mayweather’s feet moving at a decent pace to create the angles for his attacks. In view of this, I believe that Castillo set the most effective pace when fighting Floyd.

Endurance

Floyd Mayweather is one of the best economisers in the sport but do opponents make him work as much as they should? How many times have we seen Floyd triumph in the later rounds? It seems that Floyd’s challengers have to possess tremendous stamina whilst landing punches to the body in order to grind him down. In my opinion, Jose Luis Castillo is the only opponent to have bullied Floyd effectively with this strategy.

After taking all of the above areas into account, I believe Jose Luis Castillo’s style has posed the most problems to Floyd Mayweather. It could be argued that Manny Pacquiao has, or had strengths, in all of the above departments – particularly hand speed, footwork and head movement – but I’m not sure that Mayweather has as bigger problem against southpaws as the public likes to think. It remains to be seen whether that mammoth encounter will ever happen but I hope that this article assists fans in deciding for themselves which fighter they feel has had the most success against Floyd Mayweather Junior.

Andre Ward Eyes Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Showdown

Andre “S.O.G.” Ward was in attendance at the Brandon Rios-Mike Alvarado II bout and was in amazement at the fight both combatants produced. Ward recently underwent shoulder surgery but has been back in the gym for a few weeks now and is looking to get back in the ring soon.
When Ward spoke to BoxingScene he informed that while he’s not chasing any opponent in particular, one name he would like to face next is Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

“I’m in a position where I don’t feel like I got to chase anybody. I’m open to any opportunity that’s the right opportunity. We want the biggest fights and we want a PPV type of situation and I think we’re right around the corner from getting that. But I will throw one name out: [Julio Cesar] Chavez Jr” Ward revealed to BoxingScene.

“That’s the fight that fans want to see. I don’t necessarily think they want to see him and [Sergio] Martinez again. It was a great 12th round but it’s pretty much going to be the same fight. [Chavez is] busting out of 160, he’s coming to 168. If he comes to 168 then I think we should see each other. I think that’s a mega, mega fight the fans will want to see.”

Ward has dominated the Super Middleweight division for some time now and some feel he may have run out of opponents to face given he’s beaten most of them already. The Chavez fight would give Ward a new opponent and the big name he’s been looking for to cross over to the mainstream market.

Even though Chavez is coming off a loss against Sergio Martinez, Ward still believes it would not be an easy fight for him.

“I think I get the tag as being a boxer and being cute but I fight. I’m very physical inside. I don’t run. But I’m going to tell you this: Chavez Jr is not an easy fight. A lot of people say [it’s easy] but that’s not an easy fight. He’s a big kid, he’s a strong kid and he can punch. And just like tonight’s [fight], he’s doing a lot of things on the inside that a lot of people don’t give him credit for. Chavez Jr is not an easy fight for me” said the Oakland native.

Ward is already back in the gym and says he feels great so far. He will be looking to secure an opponent soon.
