They go by purse %. $300,000 for a Tyson fight was nothing. That was against Golota too I believe, so Tyson already had like a million rules he broke by then. Tyson was suspended 3 months, the same as Bey. Chavez 9 months. So yeah, clearly there are some double standards going on here. Do I think Nevada is racist against Mexicans? Lol hell no, that's just Bob overreacting. But for Bey who was absolutely juiced out of his mind, the second highest TE ratio in Nevada's history is a joke especially when compared to Julio's 9 month suspension for weed. No comparison. Nevada needs to be consistent and penalize these juices better than that.
What I'm saying is that mexican fighters aren't being targeted. What I'm saying is that if the penalize for weed it shouldn't be as severe as someone who is juicing/on peds. I'm not comparing it, Arum is the one comparing it and making it seem as if mexicans are being targeted. Again, is Tyson a fuckin mexican? No. So focus on the disparity between the punishment and how the system is broken in how it tests and punishes the fighters, not the race/ethnicity/nationality of the fighter.

This ain't about race.

Your Tyson example is actually helping Arums point.
Tyson - 3 month suspension for weed.
Chavez - 9 month suspension for weed.
Bey - 3 month suspension for historic PED use.

But like I said I'm not agreeing with Arum that the NSAC is racist against Mexicans that's just a retarded statement.

PETERSON VS. MATTHYSSEE SET FOR MAY 18 WITH ALEXANDER VS. BROOK
By Ben Thompson | March 22, 2013

Sources close to the information have informed us that a deal has been reached for IBF jr. welterweight champion Lamont Peterson to defend his title against hard-hitting top challenger Lucas Matthysse. The bout will take place in Atlantic City on May 18 as part of a Showtime card that will also feature IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander defending his title against mandatory challenger Kell Brook.

Peterson vs. Matthysse and Alexander vs. Brook is an intriguing doubleheader. A lot is on the line for all four fighters as they hope to catapult themselves into bigger matchups, like a potential showdown with undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather.

Deontay Wilder vs. Audley Harrison possible for Khan-Diaz undercard on April 27th
March 23rd, 2013 | Post Comment

Wilder Harrison Wilder vs. Harrison Khan Diaz Khan vs. Diaz julio diaz deontay wilder audley harrison amir khan By Scott Gilfoid: There’s talk of the talented American heavyweight contender/prospect Deontay Wilder (27-0, 27 KO’s) facing British heavyweight Audley Harrison (31-6, 23 KO’s) on the undercard of the Amir Khan vs. Julio Diaz fight on April 27th at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

Golden Boy promotions were hoping to get American Tony Thompson, the fighter that destroyed the UK’s best heavyweight David Price last February, but Thompson is reportedly not excited about getting in the ring with the knockout artist Wilder with his one-punch power.

Harrison, 6’6”, is almost as tall as Wilder, and recently has had a bit of luck in capturing the Prizefighter tournament last month in defeating Claus Bertino, Derric Rossy and Martin Rogan in three fights.
Harrison was slender for the tourney and perhaps in the best shape since he captured a gold medal in the 2000 Olympics.

If Harrison is able to go into a fight with Wilder in that kind of shape it could be interesting for a little while at least.

Given Wilder’s huge power, and Harrison’s glass chin, it’s hard to see the British heavyweight lasting more than 1 round against Wilder. The first big right hand that Wilder lands, we’ll likely see Harrison on the canvas badly hurt.

I just hope that Harrison doesn’t freeze up again like he did in his loss to David Price and David Haye. That was awful to look at how terrified Harrison seemed to be.

Harrison and Wilder are familiar with each having sparred while Wilder was getting Harrison ready for his fight against Price. There are rumors that Harrison dropped Wilder in sparring during one of the sessions, but that seems to be a nasty rumor started by one of the anti-Wilder critics trying to get some bad press for this talented fighter.

Harrison will be a good scalp for Wilder to add to his resume to keep him busy while Golden Boy Promotions, his American promoters, look to line Wilder up with a more talented top contender that can put Wilder in line for a title shot against one of the Klitschko brothers

Bob Arum Announces List of Possible Pacquiao Opponents
by Kel Dansby | Posted on Sunday, March 24th, 2013

bob_arum_pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao hasn’t fought since his stunning knock out loss to Juan Manuel Marquez in December. Many questioned whether Pacquiao would even fight again, but promoter Bob Arum has pretty much answered that question by revealing his list of possible oppnents for Pac-Man’s next fight.

Arum talked with Boxing Scene about the possible opponents for Manny’s next fight:

“I’ve got four guys and after the March 30 rematch between Rios and Mike Alvarado they will sit down with me and we’ll figure this thing out.”

“Manny might fight Rios if he beats Alvarado or he might fight Bradley in a rematch or Marquez in a fifth fight. I’ve got four attractive fighters and I’ll mix and match them.”

Tim Bradley really boosted himself into the realm of big prize fights with his latest slug fest against Ruslan Provodnikov. I can see both Manny and Marquez jumping at the opportunity to end his undefeated streak and win his title.

Arum touched on the style of fights that he’d like to put together and what the fans want to see:

“Fans want to see actions, Alvarado and Rios are action fighters. Bradley showed that he’s an action fighter. They don’t play around, they fight, that’s what the public wants to see. Marquez is an action fighter; Manny is an action fighter. We’ll mix and match as we go on because they are the big fights that people want to see.”

The winner of this round-robin format is probably in line for a big payout against P4P #1 fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Schaefer hoping Khan will stay at 140 long enough to fight tourney winner
March 24th, 2013 | Post Comment

Khan Diaz Khan vs. Diaz julio diaz amir khan By Scott Gilfoid: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is putting his fighter former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) in a position to where he’ll be able to capture three of the four 140 pound belts by beating the winner of the four-man light welterweight tournament in December.

Schaefer said to RingTV: “Amir wants to clean up the 140-pound weight class and, I think, what better way to do that than a big December fight against the winner of these other great matchups.”

Khan fights former IBF lightweight champion Julio Diaz (40-7-1, 29 KO’s) at a 143 pound catch-weight on April 27th at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom. Schaefer says he’s not sure if Khan will want to take the three pounds off after the fight to move back down to 140 or not to face the winner of the light welterweight tournament, but he thinks he Khan will in order to “Clean up the division.”

Even if Khan were to beat the winner of the tourney, he still wouldn’t actual have “cleaned up” the 140 pound division in the true sense of the word. For that to happen, Khan would have to beat every one of the four fighters in the tournament. He can’t just beat the winner of the tourney and then start crowing how he’s cleaned up the division because that’s not cleaning up the division.

Boxing is about match-ups, so even if he beats one of the four, it doesn’t mean he can beat all four. I mean, I don’t see Khan beating the winner of the tourney, if he even fights him, but I don’t think he will cleaned up anything if he beats the winner and then moves up to 147 after patting himself on the back for having cleaned up the division.

The only way Khan cleans up the 140 pound division is if he beats Lucas Matthysse, Danny Garcia, Lamont Peterson and Zab Judah. If he beats all four, then Khan can crow and move up to 147 having pretty much cleaned up the division. There would still be Mike Alvarado and Brandon Rios that he wouldn’t have fought, but those guys are with Top Rank, and it’s not possible for Khan to fight either of those guys. They’re like in a different boxing league now with the way the Top Rank, Golden Boy, Showtime and HBO have it set up.

FROM PILLAR TO POST: BUTE-PASCAL UNDERCARD, DAWSON-STEVENSON IN MONTREAL, AND KING'S LAST STAND
By Corey Quincy | March 25, 2013

As a fellow boxing observer, I manage to uphold strong insights into the fight game itself. I often discuss various minor regional news on social media. Covering it in full would be impossible, but doing nothing whatsoever would be an abomination, so I bring to you a new edition of "From Pillar To Post", featuring a little of this and a little of that from different angles of the Sweet Science. Enjoy!

Bute-Pascal undercard known, Pier Olivier Cote out with undisclosed illness

The well-anticipated bout between Canadian superstars Lucian Bute and Jean Pascal was announced last week, and FightHype.com has dug up some exclusive undercard information in a conversation with Interbox. First of all, it is now known that Pier-Olivier Cote's still undisclosed illness will keep him sidelined until "at least September or October." He will not participate in the showcasing opportunity that Bute-Pascal is sure to present.

Heavy-handed welterweight Kevin Bizier is set to provide chief support against an opponent to be named. He is coming off a lopsided victory to Nate Campbell. Sebastian Gauthier will also be featured on the bill. Local prospect Mikael Zewski is also being worked on for the earlier undercard. Tickets are on sale soon.

Donaire-Rigondeaux goes solo on HBO

Top Rank publicist Lee Samuels has informed us that no televised undercard will take place for the big WBA/WBO/Ring Magazine title fight between Nonito "Filipino Flash" Donaire and Guillermo Rigondeaux. Proud Irish-American Long Islander Seanie Monaghan and Jersey boy Glen Tapia are locked in for the Toprank.tv viewable undercard. More to be announced soon.

Fallout Fiasco: Dirrell off April 12th Friday Night Fights bill, Card reloaded with Rico Ramos Vs Oscar Gonzalez

Just days after Brandon Gonzalez waived the opportunity to face rising contender Will Rosinsky on April 12th with a torn hamstring, the replacement fight between talented boxer Andre Dirrell and exciting veteran Ossie Duran is cancelled also allegedly due to a Dirrell injury. ESPN has announced a replacement bout at the Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton, Washington between Feathweights Rico Ramos and Oscar Gonzalez.

A smorgasbord of other engaging scraps were released by ESPN's boxing correspondent Dan Rafael, including a May 3rd bout between exciting veterans Mauricio Herrera and Ji Hoon Kim at the Omega Productions center in Corona, California. Plus a Featherweight bout May 10th between Pinoy sensation Michael Farenas and American Eric Hunter.

Dawson to face Adonis Stevenson in Montreal on June 8th

After lopsidedly avenging his lone blemish last Friday in a 6th round knockout over upset artist Darnell Boone, Adonis Stevenson has announced he will face Light Heavyweight champion "Bad" Chad Dawson on June 8th at the Bell Center in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

We were aware this bout was on tap as Dawson's bout with Jean Pascal (who faces Lucian Bute) fell through, but just the other day, it was formally announced by GYM Promotions amongst other sources that Stevenson-Dawson was signed, sealed, and delivered.

King's last stand: April 12th Shobox card featuring Angelo Santana and Ryan Coyne

As you are likely aware, two weeks ago, controversial hall-of-fame promoter Don King's last world-class prizefighter went down the drain as Bernard Hopkins outclassed Tavoris Cloud to a 12-round unanimous decision defeat. King has now announced a big April 12 Shobox card featuring two of his final hopefuls in Ryan Coyne and Angelo Santana.

Coyne will face American compatriot and Don King stablemate Marcus Oliveira in a 12-round WBA sanctioned eliminator. The winner will be the mandatory opponent for the Light Heavyweight divisions weakest title prey, Kazakstani Beibut Shumenov.

The extraordinarily talented Cuban Santana will face lesser known Venezuelan Ismael Barroso over 10 rounds. Santana broke out on a November 2012 Shobox card, crushing Juan Garcia in five rounds. It is plausible Santana or Coyne may be the life support for Don King's promotional career.

Guillermo Jones finally set for mandatory bout against Denis Lebedev

On May 17th, Crusierweight adversaries Denis Lebedev of Russia and Guillermo Jones of Panama will finally collide for the WBA title belt in Myakinio, Russia. Jones defended his cherished WBA strap three times prior to an abysmal 19-month hiatus due to many protracting implications, including injuries and promotional difficulties. Now he is back and ready to reclaim what he feels is rightfully his.

Huck set for trilogy with Ola Afolabi on May 11th

Don King recently won the right to promote Marco Huck's mandatory WBO title defense against the always battle ready British boxer Ola Afolabi. It will take place at Tui Arena May 11th in Germany. We are currently unaware of how this bill will shape out, taking stage in Germany under King, who has no German fighters under his banner.

Kamegai-Soto Karass co-headlines Maidana-Lopez

It has become known that on June 8th at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, welterweight contenders Jesus Soto Karass and Yoshihiro Kamegai will go to battle for ten rounds, with national pride and of course big opportunities on the line. Karass is a high volume pressure fighter who is coming off a big win to Turkish contender Selcuk Aydin. Japan's Kamegai is a highly skilled rising star. This defines a crossroads battle.

Fan favorite Augustus set for return with Bad Chad Broussard's Boxncar promotions by his side

When Emmanuel Augustus bowed down after a competitive 2011 defeat to Vernon Paris, few expected he'd step back into the squared circle. But due to his vast dedication, and one can expect financial needs, he is stepping back into the ring for a new run imminently. Likely on Boxncar, Louisiana's premier promotional group's bill on May 11th. Like with all of his fighters, former professional boxer Chad Broussard hopes to slowly bring him back into contention - and if thing's don't go well, they will be handled properly. But with Emmanuel, it is always a show.

MICKEY BEY: "IT WAS THE DOCTOR'S WRONGDOING...I'M READY TO GET BACK IN THERE"
By Percy Crawford | March 26, 2013

"I'm ready to just get it back in. I'm nice with the hands, I'm a throwback fighter, and I got a great trainer and that's what I rely on, period. There ain't a pill you can swallow or a shot that you can take that will make you a good fighter, and that's what I have always relied on. It was proven that it was the doctor's wrongdoing, it was in writing, and that's why I won the judgment. The facts were put out on that. It's out now and I'm gonna try and put it behind me…I'm ready to get back in there and continue my legacy and continue on my path of being great," stated undefeated lightweight contender Mickey Bey, who talked about his fine and suspension, his future plans, and much more. Check it out!

PC: Everyone was asking why we didn't report on the positive test, but you know me, I like to get it from the horse's mouth. You had your hearing and the commission ruled in your favor. How does it feel to be justified in that aspect?

MB: I was victimized, period. People might not want to go back and admit it now because they put a lot of things out about me in the beginning, but it's in writing that I was the victim. I'm still not happy. No way I should be happy. I'm glad the commission did their job and saw all of the facts. We had the hearing and we had all of the facts laid out and the verdict was plain and simple. I was calm through it all because I knew that once they saw the facts, the truth was the truth. I knew it would be justified because you can't deny what the doctor writes down and the facts, and when we got that, I already knew what time it was. But I was highly aggravated and depressed and I'm still not all the way back to normal yet. I'm traumatized from that BS. You know me and we talk all of the time about life and the sport of boxing.

PC: Well, I know when I was around you last, you were sick and refused to take cold meds and relied on vitamin C drinks to get rid of it, so it was hard for me to believe that you would do this for sure.

MB: I'm not knocking doctors or nothing, but I don't deal with them at all. If I was trying to cheat, to be honest, more than likely, I wouldn't have failed the test because cheaters are good at cheating. I don't need to cheat. I have never had a problem. To this day, I never smoked or had a drink. I don't even know what liquor tastes like. We talking about ever! I don't take Tylenol or any of that stuff. I talked to you and you knew how sick I was for weeks, and my camp knew; everybody knew, I just couldn't come out because my lawyers told me not to say anything until after the hearing, but I was sick and depressed over this. I would have done an interview that day. I was in the gym when I heard the news. When I heard it was a positive test, I'm like, "Huh? How can that be?" By me telling you how my career has been as far as the blackballing, I had to be paranoid about that. I didn't know if somebody intentionally paid these people to do this or what. That's how crazy my career been; I had to put that into account. I ain't gonna lie, I was highly depressed and real irritated during the whole process of this for weeks.

PC: I can tell by the way you were texting me back that something was definitely bothering you. Mick, was the hardest part of this whole ordeal not being able to say anything when this first came out?

MB: Oh, it definitely was. To me, that was the worst thing that can be said about me because I'm so against drugs and supplements and sex enhancements or whatever that was supposed to be; whatever that bullshit was. That was the most frustrating part was not being able to come out. It was irritating that I got lied to by a doctor; that was the whole thing. I didn't know the reason for that. I was wondering how something like that could even happen.

PC: So just to confirm things, you went to your hearing and you won.

MB: Yeah, I won the verdict.

PC: And even though you were 30-1 [testosterone level], you feel it didn't help you at all?

MB: Oh no, this is the thing, all of that 30-1 and 100-1…number one, what is that? The funny thing to me is, the doctor was on the phone at the hearing, and I'm sure they had a ton of media people listening in. It would be nice for them to write what they heard. They played hard ball with me. They dug up everything that they could, but it was in writing and the facts were the facts. I clearly stated to the doctor, told him what profession I was in, and asked him if everything was natural because I can't take nothing that's not natural or anything that would make me test positive, and he said, "Yeah, it's all natural." I got him to document that and put it in writing. This wasn't me. I didn't put a gun to their head for them to write it down. So it was the doctor who called in to the hearing that actually said it. They asked why is my so-called levels or whatever it is was high because it was done fairly close to the fight. I only got 3 treatments of it. The guy said that ain't no way that that can increase any kind of power or anything with that little amount of treatment in that little amount of time. They said if I was trying to cheat, I would have been doing it for a lot longer and there would have been a lot more treatments done. This is not my words; this is the commission doctor's words. He also said the only slight advantage that I possibly could have had was a little bit more stamina. But it was a 2 ½ round fight. I'm quoting what one of the commissioners was saying when they were doing the ruling. This is what the doctor said, but it was also repeated by a commissioner. But I'm keeping it real, he did say I could have had a slight stamina advantage, but no strength or power advantage. The fight didn't go the distance, so stamina didn't come into play. So all of that shit is nonsense and it's overrated, and that's why I don't have all of these…I ain't one of these dudes that's hiring one of these fake strength trainers and all of this slick BS. I'm an old school fighter that believes in the old school methods. I got a trainer and an assistant trainer and a support team that's in the gym learning the Sweet Science. All of that other BS…there ain't no pill or none of that you can follow to get skills. You either can fight or you can't, period, but all of that stuff is nonsense.

I don't know what 3 treatments is, but you can get an advantage in as little as 3 days. Looks like the commission doctor got paid. No doctor is that dumb. 30-1 is peak level. I don't care how many treatments you have done or how long it took you to get to 30-1. You're basically Wolverine at that point.

HBO Begins Production for
'Legendary Nights: Gatti-Ward'

By Jake Donovan

A decade after featuring 12 of the most memorable boxing
stories it had to offer, HBO is prepared to go at least one more
round in resurrecting its Legendary Nights series.

The network issued a release Tuesday afternoon announcing
the start of production for a forthcoming edition surrounding
the unforgettable trilogy between the late Arturo Gatti and
friendly rival Micky Ward. Their three fights in 2002 and 2003
featured more than its share of drama, knockdowns, broken
bones and blood shed to the joy of audiences in attendance
and at home watching HBO.

A full decade will have passed by since the last entry. The
timing coincides with Gatti’s posthumous enshrinement into
the International Boxing Hall of Fame, marking the perfect
occasion for the self-proclaimed Network of Champions to
bring back its well-received series.

“With June 2013 marking the tenth anniversary of the third fight
of the landmark Gatti vs. Ward trilogy, we believe now is the
ideal moment to revisit this classic rivalry,” said Ken
Hershman, president, HBO Sports, in a statement. “This
retrospective will offer new perspectives and deliver revealing
insights on the two ring warriors who produced this all-time
great moment in boxing history.

“We plan to present the special on a night with a major fight on
HBO, ensuring a memorable night of boxing programming.”

‘Legendary Nights: The Tale of Gatti-Ward’ will feature HBO
Sports’ acclaimed blend of new interviews and thrilling fight
action, highlighted by previously unseen archival footage. All
three fights aired live on HBO and featured the ringside
commentary of Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant and the late
Emanuel Steward on the first and third fights. Lampley,
Merchant and George Foreman called the second bout.

Their first encounter in May 2002 – which took place at
Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. - was honored by many
entities, including the Boxing Writers Association of America,
as Fight of the Year.

Ward managed a body shot knockdown in a 9th round that
ranks among the very best in boxing history. His dominance in
the round paved the way for a disputed split decision win, his
only victory in the series and its only entry to have taken place
in New England (Ward hails from Lowell, Mass.).

The second and third fights went a long way towards defining
Gatti’s legacy and his impact on the Atlantic City boxing scene.
Gatti floored Ward in the second fight in Nov. 2002, the least
exciting or competitive of the three entries, but still well worth
repeat viewings.

Both the rematch and rubber match took place in front of sold
out crowds at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Gatti was
dominant in the third fight, save for a broken hand and a
knockdown to create for high drama, but did enough to take a
well-deserved decision and two out of three in the series.

Ward never fought again after the third fight, announcing his
retirement and resurfacing as part of Gatti’s entourage. He was
in the corner for Gatti’s next fight, a vacant 140 lb. title win over
Gianluca Branco in Jan. ’04. Ward assumed the same role for
the very last fight of Gatti’s career, a humbling knockout loss to
Alfonso Gomez in July ’07.

Gatti managed just four wins in his final seven fights following
the series tiebreaker against Ward. The three losses came in
the last four bouts of his wildly popular career, which ended
two years prior to his tragic death in July ’09.

Overall, Gatti appeared 21 times on HBO, while Ward enjoyed
six appearances – the three fights with Gatti, his dramatic
knockout win over Shea Neary, and losses to Antonio Diaz and
Jesse James Leija.

INSTANT REPLAY TO BE USED IN SERGIO MARTINEZ TITLE DEFENSE AGAINST MARTIN MURRAY
By Press Release | March 27, 2013

On April 27th, Middleweight kingpin Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez will make his much anticipated 'Homecoming' in his native country of Argentina, when he looks to defend his WBC middleweight title against England's undefeated interim WBA middleweight champion Martin Murray (25-0-1, 11KO's). Martinez-Murray will take place at the country's famed 50,000-seat Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield in Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina and will be shown live on HBO World Championship Boxing, beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT.

In the live televised co-feature, Martinez' fellow countryman, longtime welterweight contender Luis Carlos Abregu (34-1, 28KO's) takes on fellow top-rated contender Antonin Decarie (27-1, 8KO's) for the vacant WBC Silver welterweight world title.

"Boxing needs to step into the 21st century and use the technology that we have available to us, to make sure that justice prevails in this sport," stated the WBC's Mauricio Sulaiman. "Justice is not served in our sport when fouls or accidental actions occur, creating unjust results. The WBC has used Instant Replay for the last five years with great results, and we are very happy to be working together with the highly prestigious TV network, HBO, for this historic event."

"The WBC has always been at the forefront of advancing boxing either through medical safety standards and technology as well as the overall betterment of the sport. This is just another example of the WBC helping boxing take another step forward," stated DiBella Entertainment's V.P. Ron Rizzo.

"We are supportive of this initiative and happy to lend technical assistance so the officials can make their determinations," said Rick Bernstein, executive producer, HBO Sports. "Instant replay can be a valuable asset since everybody's goal is to have the correct call."

"I will never forget when everyone criticized Don Jose Sulaiman, President of the WBC, when he changed the distance of world championship fights from 15 rounds to 12 rounds. Now, every major sanctioning body follows that same rule for championship bouts. Hopefully for the good of boxing, everyone will follow him and use instant replay to avoid any more controversies in our beloved sport

OBSERVE AND FIGHT: HAYMON, BRONER, AND THE FUTURE OF HBO BOXING
By David Kassel | March 25, 2013

It's Monday. Welcome back for another edition of Observe and Fight, The Boxing Observer's compilation of observations and random thoughts from the week that was in boxing. Get caught up on some of the most recent events you may have missed out on including the possibility of Al Haymon starting his own promotional company, a preview of the rematch between last year's fight of the year contender, Adrien Broner's arrest, Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado, and much more. Without further ado, check out the latest observations from The Boxing Observer, David Kassel.

Is Al Haymon finally going to take the plunge and start his own promotional company? At this point, every boxing fan knows who Al Haymon is (even if you have never seen his face before), but only hardcore boxing fans know the kind of power he carries in the sport. He is so influential that he was voted as the #42 most influential man in sports (and the highest figure in the sport of boxing) by Sports Illustrated. To give you some perspective, he is 3 spots higher on the list than UFC President, Dana White (#45), 6 spots higher than Dallas Mavericks owner, and the much more well-known, Mark Cuban (#48), and 7 spots higher than the new Executive Vice President of Sports at Showtime Network (which, by all intents and purposes, has surpassed HBO in boxing viewership) Stephen Espinoza (#49). Haymon has very quietly and meticulously grown his stable of fighters over the past decade and now sports the deepest stable in boxing. He has been the biggest reason why HBO and Showtime have paid ridiculous prices to air talented fighters take on over-matched opposition while always seeming to leave people wanting more. This week's news that HBO has decided to take a stand against Golden Boy Promotions and Showtime has to make one think that Haymon will take his stable and do his own thing. Nobody, except the people behind the curtains, truly knows which fighters are signed exclusively to Haymon and not to a promotional company, but I'm willing to bet it's more than we think. If that is the case, Haymon has enough fighters in his repertoire to stage very entertaining shows. He currently represents: Floyd Mayweather, Adrien Broner, Devon Alexander, Danny Garcia, Austin Trout, Peter Quillin, Leo Santa Cruz, Josesito Lopez, Chris Arreola, Seth Mitchell, Gary Russell Jr., Keith Thurman, Andre Berto, Erislandy Lara, Sakio Bika, J'Leon Love, Omar Figueroa, and many more. That list looks like a lot of money coming through the door if you ask me. Will it finally be time for Haymon to unveil his master plan and monopolize boxing? Only time will tell, but don't forget that Haymon makes just as much, possibly more, money from his music endeavors, which means he has some serious bankroll.

I guess Adrien Broner truly is trying to follow in the footsteps of Floyd Mayweather. In case you missed the news, Broner was arrested in Miami last week for allegedly biting a security guard, who was trying to break up a fight and pulled Broner away from the scuffle. Maybe I shouldn't make the comparison to Floyd Mayweather. Maybe we should call Broner "Mini-Tyson." In all seriousness though, maybe Broner was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but his "Band Camp", whom I have been around, rolls at least 40 deep, and at some point, one of those leeches is going to cost Broner severely. It almost happened outside LIV night club last week. Broner needs to slow his roll with the antics because being an idiot will catch up with him at some point. I'm sure Mr. Haymon had a little chat with "The Problem" Broner, which caused Adrien to send out an apologetic Tweet after the incident. At only 23 years old, Broner likes to put on a show, and he should have people in his ear guiding him in certain situations, but those people should not be members of his "Band Camp." They should be business partners, legal advisors, and financial advisors. Those are the real people who keep athletes from going broke and staying out of trouble.

Shame on the Nevada State Athletic Commission for regulating fighters like the NCAA regulates schools. The problem with the NSAC, much like the NCAA, is there is no accountability, nor is there any precedent when an athlete does something he/she should not do. In boxing news that scraped the bottom of the barrel for the week, Cleveland-based fighter Mickey Bey, who now trains out of the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas, tested positive for elevated testerone levels, which were more than 5 times the amount the NSAC allows, after his most recent fight. Bey received a 3-month suspension, retroactive to the fight, and a $1,000 fine. I'm glad the NSAC took some action, but how in the hell can they hand down such a feeble punishment when Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. received a 9-month suspension and a $900,000 fine for testing positive for marijuana after his September fight with Sergio Martinez? Last time I checked, both steroids and marijuana were illegal (unless you live in the states of Colorado or Washington, where marijuana is legal) and only one of those two can help a fighter get stronger, which in essence can contribute to the death of another fighter. Weed does not help a fighter's performance, nor does it make them stronger. Testosterone (which is a steroid) allows fighters to gain an edge in punching power which can have a serious affect on an opponent's long-term health. This punishment seems like a no-brainer to me, but I guess since Chavez Jr. is a name fighter, and Bey is not widely recognized, Keith Kizer and company decided to take the cash and run. For those who think boxing promoters are the only ones who are corrupt, think again. State Athletic Commissions are just as bad, which is why we, as boxing fans, will never get what we truly believe is a fair sport.

One more note about steroids...I guess Floyd Mayweather believes in random drug testing for his opponents, but not for his fighters who train inside his gym. I'm not placing blame on Mayweather for Bey's actions, but if Floyd Mayweather truly wants to make a difference in boxing by regulating drug testing, he should be more aware of fighters signed to his promotional company and hold them to the same standard he holds his opposition. Boxing doesn't just need clean main event superstars, it needs clean boxing gyms.

If you aren't excited about this weekend's rematch between Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado, you aren't a fan of the Sweet Science. Make no mistake, there will be nothing scientific about Saturday night's main event. You are going to see two warriors engage in a battle in the ring that will make the Timothy Bradley-Ruslan Provodnikov fight from a couple weeks ago look like a pillow fight. In most cases, it is unrealistic to think that the rematch will be as good as the first fight because it usually isn't, but this isn't most cases, and these aren't ordinary fighters. Both Rios and Alvarado only know one way to fight...straight ahead. Neither guy is worried about taking a few punches as long as they give a few as well. Whether the fight goes 1 round or 12, I'll be on the edge of my seat the entire time with only the 1-minute rest period in between rounds to compose myself.

Is anyone really surprised that Juan Manuel Marquez said that Timothy Bradley is on his short list of potential opponents? As I mentioned in last week's Observe and Fight, after the beating Bradley took from Provodnikov, Marquez is probably itching to try and take Bradley's WBO welterweight championship belt.

Does anyone have a link for Gennady Golovkin's title defense Saturday night against Nobuhiro Ishida? It will be a mismatch, but watching GGG put another beatdown on someone should be fun. I'm glad Golovkin isn't sitting back and waiting for a payday. He is staying busy and improving his craft. A lot of young fighters can learn a little something about that.

PETER QUILLIN: "EVERYONE WILL SEE ME AT MY BEST ON APRIL 27TH"
By Press Release | March 26, 2013

World Boxing Organization (WBO) middleweight champion Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin (28-0, 20 KOs) puts his title belt and unbeaten record on the line April 27 in his much-anticipated first world title defense against challenger Fernando Guerrero (25-1, 19 KOs) at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Quillin was originally schedule to defend against Guerrero on February 9, however, the entire show was postponed due to an injury suffered by headliner Danny Garcia.

Fighting once again on Showtime Championship Boxing, Quillin vs. Guerrero could steal the thunder from Garcia and his challenger, Zab Judah, as Quillin did last October in the same venue against previously undefeated WBO title-holder Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam, who was floored six times and eventually lost a 12-round decision (115-107, 115-107, 115-107), as well as his WBO crown.

The powerful Quillin, who now lives in New York City (Manhattan) but trains for fights in Los Angeles, returns home to fight again in Brooklyn where he lived for several years. "I'm fortunate to have my fight shown around the world through Showtime and to be going back to fight in New York City where I built my name," Quillin said. "There's not too much else in my thought process other than working hard to defend my title belt. Everyone will see me at my best on April 27th because every camp is about getting better.

"I love to challenge myself. I look in the mirror and honestly believe nobody can beat me. I still have a lot to improve, though, and I've gotten this far fighting through a lot of BS. I take what I do very seriously and anybody can see just that by watching what I put myself through at the gym."

Cuban-American favorite Quillin has a clear advantage in quality opponents fought compared to the WBO No. 9-rated Guerrero, a southpaw from the Dominican Republic who lives in Salisbury, Maryland. Quillin has defeated world champions N'Jikam and Ronald "Winky" Wright, as well as Craig McEwan, Jesse Brinkley, Fernando Zuniga, Dionisio Miranda and Antwun Echols. Guerrero's victims include J.C. Candelo, Saul Duran, Ishe Smith, Ossie Duran and Gabriel Rosado. However, Guerrero's lone loss as a professional boxer was to a then 40-year-old with 12-losses, Grady Brewer, nearly two years ago by way of a fourth-round technical knockout for the vacant North American Boxing Federation (NABF).

"I'm expecting to fight the best Fernando Guerrero," the 29-year-old Quillin added. "He lost to Brewer but there may have been things going on I don't know about. I respect him (Guerrero) but, once we step in the ring, things will be different and I won't have any respect for him, like anybody else I fight. I know he's coming in the best of shape - he'd better - and we're going to give fans what they want to see.

"A lot of guys are told early in their careers that they'll be world champions. All I was ever called when I was young was a juvenile delinquent or criminal. We've both overcome struggles. I'm not saying mine were tougher than his. Struggles make better fighters. He has said that I have power and speed, but I have a lot more -- I'm good looking and tough with balls. I've got the whole package. I want to win this fight as much as my last one."
