ROSS GREENBURG REUNITES WITH MAYWEATHER AS SHOWTIME SPORTS SETS EXPANSIVE PROGRAMMING LINE UP FOR MAY DAY
By Press Release | March 19, 2013

SHOWTIME Sports has scheduled more than 100 hours of diverse boxing and documentary programming across broadcast television, cable television, premium television, and digital portals in advance of the upcoming SHOWTIME PPV presentation of MAY DAY-the mega-event headlined by boxing's No. 1 pound-for-pound titlist Floyd "Money" Mayweather's welterweight world championship defense against Four-Division World Champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero, Saturday, May 4 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The lineup features more than 20 hours of live, edited and exclusive content targeted for a general sports audience as well as the core boxing fans and includes two documentary films, a five-part documentary series, a 30-minute countdown show, two live SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® events and live coverage from multiple fight week events, all before the first bell of MAY DAY: Mayweather vs. Guerrero pay-per-view special.

SHOWTIME Sports has tapped renowned television executive Ross Greenburg, recipient of more than 50 Sports Emmy® Awards in his distinguished career, to serve as executive producer on two key pieces of programming. Working with SHOWTIME for the first time, Greenburg is uniquely qualified to guide the editorial on Mayweather, having executive produced multiple documentary series on the fighter since 2007.

"This is an aggressive and varied lineup of content, each element aimed at raising the anticipation for boxing's marquee event of the year," said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports. "The Mayweather appeal is unmistakable and warrants this type of unprecedented exposure. What viewers will find during this promotion, however, is that Robert Guerrero is one of the most compelling, interesting and talented fighters ever to step into the ring opposite Mayweather.

"I thank my colleagues at SHOWTIME and CBS for their support and enthusiasm since our agreement with Mayweather was announced. Our collective aim in the next seven weeks is to serve the insatiable appetite of the staunchest boxing fans as well as to expose a broad audience to the drama and the intensity that is sure to come on May 4th."

The programming blitz begins on Wednesday, April 3 with the premiere of an exclusive documentary film titled "30 DAYS IN MAY" (10 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME), a one-hour film which chronicles Mayweather's 2012 stint in prison. Created exclusively from never-before-seen footage, "30 DAYS IN MAY" features the only interviews Mayweather conducted about what he has called "a life-changing experience."

On Wednesday, April 10, SHOWTIME Sports will debut the latest chapter of its original documentary series ALL ACCESS (10 p.m. ET/PT, SHOWTIME). Greenburg will serve as an executive producer on ALL ACCESS: MAYWEATHER vs GUERRERO as the series takes viewers into the dramatic and unpredictable world of prize fighting. From gritty backstories to the sport's biggest stage, ALL ACCESS has a unique approach that allows its subjects to guide the narrative on real life terms. New episodes will debut every Wednesday through May 1 on SHOWTIME, with encore presentations airing on CBS SPORTS NETWORK. ALL ACCESS Epilogue, which will spotlight the intensity of fight week, taking viewers inside the ropes on fight night and into the rarely seen, uncelebrated aftermath of world championship boxing, will premiere on SHOWTIME on Saturday, May 18 at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT.

CBS Television will broadcast a special one-hour documentary titled "MAYWEATHER" on Saturday, April 27, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Greenburg will executive produce "MAYWEATHER", a film that reveals the life story of the charismatic character that is Floyd "Money" Mayweather. The program also examines the hard-working, humble approach taken by Four-Division World Champion Robert Guerrero, who has endured incredible challenges on the road to this May 4th mega fight.

LIVE PROGRAMMING

On the two Saturdays preceding the May 4 SHOWTIME PPV event, SHOWTIME will present two high profile world championship boxing events live on the premium network's acclaimed SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING series.

On Saturday, April 20, from the 30,000+ seat Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez will return to SHOWTIME to headline against Austin Trout in a super welterweight world championship unification bout. In separate fights in 2012, both men set ratings records for boxing on SHOWTIME. Now, they collide in what is by far the most significant and challenging fight in both of their careers.

On Saturday, April 27, live on SHOWTIME from Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., undefeated rising star Danny Garcia of Philadelphia risks his unified super lightweight world championship against former Two-Division and Four-Time World Champion Zab Judah of Brooklyn.

LIVE FROM LAS VEGAS

SHOWTIME will televise the official weigh-in live on Friday, May 3 and a pre-fight show on Saturday, May 4, immediately preceding the pay-per-view telecast. Each telecast will include live interviews, ALL ACCESS behind-the-scenes features from fight week and, on Saturday's program, live undercard fights.

MAY DAY FIGHT WEEK LINEUP

A fight week blitz will begin on Monday, April 29, with daily programming on SHOWTIME, SHOWTIME EXTREME and CBS SPORTS NETWORK leading up to May 4. Included in the lineup will be ALL ACCESS marathons, classic Mayweather and Guerrero fights, as well as the aforementioned live programming from Las Vegas.

CLASSIC FIGHTS

Encore presentations of classic bouts featuring Mayweather and Guerrero will air on SHOWTIME, SHOWTIME EXTREME and CBS SPORTS NETWORK. Fights, airing in their entirety, are Mayweather vs. Oscar De La Hoya, the most watched pay-per-view event in history; the controversial fight between Mayweather and Victor Ortiz; Mayweather vs. Ricky Hatton; Mayweather vs. Shane Mosley and Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel Marquez.

Full fights from the Guerrero archive include the southpaw's gutsy, breakthrough performances against Selcuk Aydin, Michael Katsidis, Gamaliel Diaz (rematch) as well as his first fight after learning of his wife's diagnosis of Leukemia in 2007, a first-round knockout win over Martin Honorio.

Shane Mosley isn't getting the sort of fight he wants, but he will return to the ring on May 18 against Pablo Cesar Cano in Cancun.

Shane Mosley will return to the ring on May 18, as the veteran former champion looks to pick up his first win since 2009 when he faces Pablo Cesar Cano in Cancun.

Mosley (46-8-1, 39 KO) hasn't won since beating Antonio Margarito over four years ago, going 0-3-1 since then with lopsided losses to Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, and Canelo Alvarez, plus an ugly draw with Sergio Mora.

Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer said recently that he'd encountered major resistance to getting Mosley back on Showtime or HBO (not that that's a concern anymore, if GBP is involved) and suggested to Mosley that he take something more in line with a tune-up fight to show network executives he can still compete.

Cano (26-2-1, 20 KO) isn't a bad fighter at all, having been very competitive with Paulie Malignaggi last October -- scores were split among fans and media on that one -- and giving Erik Morales a good test in 2011 before getting stopped on cuts.

This is really the perfect kind of fight for Shane if he's going to fight on, which he is for various reasons. If he can't beat Cano, then it's over. Cano is solid, but if Mosley is talking another world title run, this is a fight he has to win impressively.

Bradley-Provodnikov delivers 1.2 mil viewers on HBO + 274K on replay next day
March 19th, 2013 | Post Comment

Bradley Provodnikov Bradley vs. Provodnikov timothy bradley By Chris Williams: Bob Arum can’t say WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley (30-0, 12 KO’s) can’t draw good ratings now because his fight last Saturday night against Ruslan Provodnikov (22-2, 15 KO’s) delivered a huge 1.2 million viewers on HBO, according to RingTV. That’s not all.

The next day, Bradley vs. Provodnikov pulled in 274,000 fans to see it on replay on HBO, which outside the Bernard Hopkins vs. Tavorius Cloud fight on replay. The 1.2 million viewers that saw the Bradley-Provodnikov fight was identical to the numbers that the Hopkins vs. Cloud fight drew on HBO.

That’s pretty impressive because Bradley has never been considered to be a fighter that attracted high ratings, and the same goes for Provodnikov, who’s fights have been limited to ESPN2. But it could be that Bradley having had his last fight against the popular but aging Manny Pacquiao last year in June was enough to increase Bradley’s fan base or at least increase the amount of boxing fans that wanted to see Bradley fight.

Obviously, not all the people that wanted to see Bradley fight were fans of him. Like myself, I just was curious to see how he’d look after having beaten Pacquiao by a controversial decision in his previous fight on HBO.

Bradley didn’t escape controversy with the Provodnikov fight because he was knocked down in the 12th, and he appeared to be dropped in the 1st, and as badly hurt in that round, the 2nd and the 6th without any of those three rounds being ruled a 10-8 round.

Provodnikov won five rounds in the fight – 1st, 2nd, 6th, 11th and 12th rounds. However, one of the judges gave Bradley the 11th round despite that being a clear round for Provodnikov in the eyes of many boxing fans. The final judges’ scores were 115-112, 114-113 and 114-113.

Provodnikov’s promoter files protest, wants immediate rematch with Bradley
March 19th, 2013 | Post Comment

Rios Provodnikov Rios vs. Provodnikov brandon rios By Chris Williams: According to Steve Kim, Banner Promotions, the promoters for Ruslan Provodnikov (22-2, 15 KO’s), have filed a protest to the World Boxing Organization and presumably the California State Athletic Commission to get an immediate rematch against WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley (30-0, 12 KO’s) after losing by a 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday night at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

The reason for the protest is pretty obvious. Provodnikov badly hurt Bradley in the 1st round and knocked him down, but wasn’t given credit for the knockdown, as the referee ruled it a slip. Bradley was clearly hurt, and when he attempted to get back up, he back down again.

In the 2nd round, Bradley was hit with a huge right hand from Provodnikov that sent Bradley falling backwards against the ropes. It looked like the ropes stopped Bradley from falling his back, and normally an alert referee will rule that a knockdown. As it was, Bradley was staggering around the ring during the 2nd round and taking vicious punishment.

Even without Bradley falling against the ropes, you can make a strong case that the 2nd round should have been a 10-8 round. In the 6th, Bradley was once against staggered and falling against the ropes as he was out on his feet. As hurt as Bradley was, it was surprising that it wasn’t scored a 10-8 round.

The final judges’ scores were 115-112, 114-113, and 114-113. As you can see if Provodnikov was given credit for 10-8 rounds in the 1st, 2nd and 6th rounds, he would have won the fight. If he was given credit for a 10-8 round in just one of those rounds, the fight would have been ruled a draw and we might be seeing a rematch under those conditions.

I doubt Bradley would give Provodnikov a rematch if the fight were ruled a draw, but at least there would be pressure from boxing fans on him to fight him again.

It would be surprising if the Commission and sanctioning bodies do request for Bradley to give Provodnikov a rematch. I can’t see it happening, but I bet Bradley’s promoter Bob Arum won’t be happy if that’s what happens because he’s going to move Bradley forward to fights against his Top Rank fighters, and he’s not going to want Bradley being tied down facing a Banner Promotions guy like Provodnikov that could potentially ruin his unbeaten record in a second fight.

Wow Nevada needs to be more consistent. His TE ratio was over 30:1 and he's only getting a 3 month suspension and $1,000 fine. Meanwhile Chavez jr smokes some weed, is suspended for 9 months and millions of dollars in fines. This Bey guy simply said the doctor gave him some shit blah blah blah therefore its a light suspension. One of Mayweathers fighters btw.

Arum responds:

"If the Nevada Commission has one standard of punishment for Americans,
and one standard of punishment for Mexicans, then they should say that,"
said Arum.

"Because that is the only explanation. Because this sends a message, loud
and clear, to the Mexicans in Mexico, to Mexican fighters, and to Mexican
managers. Loud and clear."

Chavez had tested positive for a banned diuretic following his unanimous
decision victory over Troy Rowland in November, of 2009, at the MGM Grand
in Las Vegas. In the wake of the fight with Rowland, Chavez was fined
$10,000 and suspended for seven months by the NSAC.

Chavez was arrested in January of last year for driving drunk, just a week
before his fight with Marco Antonio Rubio in Texas. Chavez later struck a
plea deal in mid-June of last year, which granted him three years of
probation and ordered him to to attend 30 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings,
the latter of which he already had completed.

In spite of Chavez's previous transgressions, Arum still believes the NSAC
was to harsh on the 27-year-old Mexican son of the legendary champion.

"The disparity is absolutely unbelievable. One guy is juiced to the ceiling
with testosterone, and he could seriously hurt his competitor, and he gets
three months and a $1,000 fine," said Arum, "and the Mexican smoked a
joint 10 days before the fight, and he gets a fine of $900,000 plus a nine-month suspension. Just tell me where is the sanity in that? Or, as one might
expect, there is one standard that the Nevada Commission uses for
Americans and another standard for Mexicans."

Victor Conte Quits Team Donaire

By Gabriel Montoya

On Monday, famed nutritionist and anti-doping advocate Victor Conte informed Maxboxing.com that effectively immediately, he would no longer be working with 2012’s “Fighter of the Year” Nonito Donaire.

“I quit. I’m done working with Nonito. It was entirely my decision,” Conte informed Maxboxing.com. The normally outspoken Conte did not wish to elaborate.

When reached for comment, Donaire did not acknowledge the full extent of the split but made it clear he would continue his 24/7/365 anti-doping program with the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA).

“Regardless of the current standing of my relationship with Victor, I will still be actively enrolling myself in VADA and subjecting myself to 24/7/365 drug testing,” Donaire said via text.

Conte has routinely been providing Donaire with comprehensive blood testing, hypoxic training equipment and methods plus individualized nutritional supplementation. In addition to Conte leaving the team, this writer understands that world-class sprint coach Remi Korchemny has also decided to leave Team Donaire.

The loss of Conte and Korchemny is ill-timed as Donaire, 31-1 (20), is in the thick of training camp, preparing for his dangerous April 13 showdown with Guillermo Rigondeaux, 11-0 (8), a WBO and WBA super bantamweight unification bout on HBO. The move is a sudden shock. The two men have worked together over three years, winning multiple titles in two divisions including wins over Fernando Montiel and Wilfredo Vasquez Jr

George Foreman Returns To Boxing

ormer two-time world heavyweight champion, George Foreman, announced his return to boxing today. But this is no comeback as a fighter. It’s his professional debut as a boxing promoter! Foreman has teamed up with his sons to form Foreman Boys Promotions.

“I have worked for years with my sons in the business world and I am excited to introduce them to the boxing world, ” said the senior Foreman. Foreman Boys Promotions will team with Top Rank in a strategic alliance, including the Solo Boxeo Tecate series, bringing Foreman’s legacy and branding power to the promotional side of boxing. The Foremans also plan on promoting goodwill and unity to the sport of boxing.

“It was a privilege to promote George Foreman’s comeback fights which led to a world championship,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. “Now it is great we are working with George’s sons to continue the relationship and to promote boxing at a high level.”

Dirrell pulls out of April 12th fight on ESPN2
March 21st, 2013 | Post Comment

Dirrell Duran Dirrell vs. Duran andre dirrell By Scott Gilfoid: Dan Rafael is reporting that Andre Dirrell (21-1, 14 KO’s) has pulled out of his April 12th fight against Ossie Duran (28-10-2, 11 KO’s) on the ESPN2 telecast. Now let’s not rush to judgment. I’m sure Dirrell has a perfectly good excuse for pulling out of the fight. It might be an injury, it could be a management thing with SMS Promotions or they could simply be looking to put Dirrell in with a better known opponent around the same time.

Dirrell wouldn’t be pulling out of the fight card if it wasn’t for a good reason because that’s not the way the guy is. He’s a total professional.

It would be interesting if Eddie Hearn from Matchroom Sport were to have signed Dirrell to fight his guy George Groves a month later on the May 25th Carl Froch vs. Mikkel Kessler card in London, UK.
Would Hearn do that? Nah, are you kidding? He wouldn’t put Dirrell within 1000 miles of the green Groves because the outcome would be too obvious.

Dirrell already sparred with Groves not long ago, and he said he had to take it easy on him because he noted that Groves didn’t know how to move his head and was too easy to hit. Dirrell just toyed with him during the sparring session.

Dirrell will be fighting soon regardless of him pulling out of the Duran fight. He’s got to stay so that he can get a title shot by the end of 2013 or early 2014. He wants Frochs’ IBF belt, and the only way Dirrell can get that strap is to fight frequently so that he can get pushed up the rankings quickly. I don’t see Froch giving him a rematch, but at least the IBF can strip Froch if he fails to fight Dirrell. However, it’ll likely be Kessler as the strap holder if and when he gets past Froch in May. It’s anyone’s guess what Kessler will do with the IBF strap. I see him giving it up rather than defending it against Dirrell

San Antonio can expect more than 30,000 fans in the building come fight night, proving once again that Texas is a hot spot for boxing aficionados.

TEDDY ATLAS: "THERE WAS SOME OF BRADLEY AND SOME OF PROVODNIKOV LEFT IN THAT RING...THEY WILL NOT GET IT BACK"
By Percy Crawford | March 22, 2013

"Every time a fighter gets in that ring, they come out of that ring after a tough fight with less than they went in there with. That is a fact. That is a fact and that's why I take it very seriously when people rob these fighters and when we have no structure to protect these fighters and the system is not in place to do those things... there was some of Bradley and some of Provodnikov left in that ring after that fight the other night, and they will not get it back. Once it's gone, it's gone," stated ESPN commentator and world-class trainer Teddy Atlas, who shared his thoughts on last Saturday's war between WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley and challenger Ruslan Provodnikov. Having watched Provodnikov up-close and personal in several fights on ESPN, Atlas had a lot to say about the performances of both fighters. Check it out!

PC: When I see a fighter suffer the kind of damage that both Timothy Bradley and Ruslan Provodnikov suffered during their brutal fight, recent memory brings me to Trinidad/Vargas. Watching that fight, I knew Vargas would never be the same. Going back a little further, it was like Pryor/Arguello. Again, I just knew those guys wouldn't be the same. Do you feel that's what you witnessed last Saturday night?

TA: Is the question that he might not be the same again?

PC: Yes sir!

TA: Yeah, listen…this was a different point in their career. This was when they were older, but when Frazier and Ali left that ring in Manila, they didn't leave the person that they went into that ring as. They left with less of those people. Every time that a fighter gets in a tough fight…here is the reality people, so maybe they will understand it. And that's why I'm passionate and so strong and so thick-headed when I go after these people in boxing that rob fighters, these promoters that rob fighters, and the commissions that allow it to happen. These policies that are not in place to have structure to look out for the fighters, that's why I am such a pain in the neck for you fans out there that hear me screaming all of the time when I see something done wrong to a fighter because they only have so many fights. Every time they get in the ring, unlike the judges who sit at ringside with nothing but a pencil in their hand, they are not being dissipated by the fight. They are not being worn down. They don't have something taken out of their physicality. Every time a fighter gets in that ring, they come out of that ring after a tough fight with less than they went in there with. That is a fact. That is a fact and that's why I take it very seriously when people rob these fighters and when we have no structure to protect these fighters and the system is not in place to do those things. It's just like Frazier and Ali in Manila…I know they were older. I know they were dissipated already, I understand all of that, but there was a lot of them left in Manila.

And there was some of Bradley…I can't tell you how much, but there was some of Bradley and some of Provodnikov left in that ring after that fight the other night, and they will not get it back. Once it's gone, it's gone. Bradley, to me…what bothered me…and I love Bradley, his heart, the way he goes about preparing himself, the way he doesn't talk all kinds of crap; he just behaves like a fighter and acts like a fighter, he talks like a fighter and represents himself like a fighter. He acts like a champion. But I was concerned with the way he got affected. I know Provodnikov. He has fought 6, 7, or 8 times, I don't know how many times on ESPN. I've seen him on his way up. I've seen him through all of the developing stages of his career up front and up close on air, and he is not that kind of puncher. He is a decent puncher; he goes to the body and he's a tough son of a gun. I think he is a strong puncher, but my goodness, he looked like George Foreman. He looked like a wrecking ball the other night. Part of it is he caught him clean…I get it, but I'm concerned about how much of a part of it is something else. Is part of it some of the wear and tear during his career from amateur to pro? Or is part of it…see, I look at everything. Or is part of it the weight that he took off. I understand that he was heavy, the heaviest of his career, and he had to take off 30 to 40 pounds. I don't know what the exact number was, but I know he had to take a significant amount of weight off in camp, so that concerns me, because when I saw him touched, when I saw him hit with those punches, I saw Bradley affected in a bigger way than I have ever seen him affected. I seen him get off of the floor against Kendall Holt and hurt at times in other fights and he got up or shook it off and behaved like a champion, but I have never seen him affected and shaken the way he was against Provodnikov. And again, he made Provodnikov look like Joe Frazier and George Foreman all in one. And he is not that kind of puncher, so it concerns me. I'm in the business where you need to have answers. You can't just say, "Okay, let's go on to the next stage." No! You need to have answers if you care about this stuff and if you want the fighters properly looked out for. So one of the questions I ask is why was he so shaken up every time he got hit? Every time he got caught from the first round to the 12th round, he got badly hurt, and I'm just concerned as to why that was happening to the degree that it was happening.

PC: For his trainer Joel Diaz to come out and say that Bradley admitted to being hurt in every single round of a 12-round fight cannot be a good thing.

TA: I saw that and I agree and it was very apparent, very clear, and obvious that he was hurt in every round. Every time that he got caught, he was hurt. It was the kind of fight that you never felt comfortable that he would get through the fight because anytime he would get caught, there was a chance that he would get affected and affected very badly once again.

Bullshit. Is Tyson a fuckin mexican? Hell no. He got fined like $300k for having weed in his system.

Fuck Arum.

That was under Marc Ratner over 10 years so that doesn't apply. Obviously Arum is just looking out for his fighter but clearly there needs to be some consistency here. One fighter is juiced out of his fucking mind and he can fight as early as May. That's not right. His TE ratio makes MMA's Overeem's failed test look like he was taking Flintstones Vitamins in comparison!

I've always felt that the Nevada Commission and Floyd mayweather have a very close relationship, maybe cuz he holds his big fights there or something. So it makes sense that if said fighter has tested positive for drugs, something Mayweather is completely against, then he should drop him from his team. if not, then of course is fishy. Arum is attacking NC on race just to bring up a massive attention to an issue that a lot of people want answers to

How does it not apply when he twice said, "Nevada Commission?" Did he call out the current head of the NAC or any of it's guys? No, he called out the entire organization. To say they have different standards for mexican fighters is crazy when Tyson got fined 300k for smoking weed. Is Tyson a goddamn mexican? No. Is the sentencing/fines/punishment structure backwards? YES! But they aren't targeting mexican fighters or using a different standard for them, that's crazy.

They go by purse %. $300,000 for a Tyson fight was nothing. That was against Golota too I believe, so Tyson already had like a million rules he broke by then. Tyson was suspended 3 months, the same as Bey. Chavez 9 months. So yeah, clearly there are some double standards going on here. Do I think Nevada is racist against Mexicans? Lol hell no, that's just Bob overreacting. But for Bey who was absolutely juiced out of his mind, the second highest TE ratio in Nevada's history is a joke especially when compared to Julio's 9 month suspension for weed. No comparison. Nevada needs to be consistent and penalize these juices better than that.
