Schaefer Plans Out 140 Tournament...this Actually Makes A Lot Of Sense

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has outlined an entire plan off attack for an internal mini-tournament of sorts with the biggest junior welterweights in his stable. In the first match, WBC/WBA champion Danny Garcia (25-0, 16KOs) would face Zab Judah (42-7, 29KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on April 27th. The second leg of the tourney would see Lamont Peterson (31-1-1, 16KOs) defend his IBF title against Lucas Matthysse (33-2, 31KOs) on May 18th.
The next step would have Golden Boy match the winners of Garcia-Judah and Peterson-Matthysse. And then the overall winner would face Amir Khan (27-3, 19KOs), who returns on April 27th against Julio Diaz in Sheffield.

Andre Ward Would Consider Facing Bernard Hopkins

NEW YORK — Andre Ward was very respectful of Bernard Hopkins following Hopkins’ historic victory Saturday night at Barclays Center.
The undefeated WBA/WBC super middleweight champion made it perfectly clear that, though, that he is open to fighting Hopkins, who is adamantly against the possibility.
“If that’s a fight that’s in demand,” Ward said, “and something that could set up both our families for a long time, then I think that’s something both of us would consider.”
The 48-year-old Hopkins (53-6-2, 32 KOs, 2 NC) said after defeating Tavoris Cloud (24-1, 19 KOs) for the IBF light heavyweight title that he would not fight Ward for any amount of money because he considers himself a mentor and a friend to Ward.
The Philadelphia native also said he could make 168 pounds for the right fight. A bout with Ward would be the most lucrative option for the former middleweight champion, however, and Ward would consider moving up to 175 pounds for a shot at Hopkins’ light heavyweight championship.
“That would be a great pay-per-view event and it would do a good number,” said Ward, who called the Hopkins-Cloud fight for HBO. “I think it would be a big event, but all parties have to be in and it has to make sense all the way around.”
The 29-year-old Ward wants to keep his options open as he recovers from shoulder surgery because there aren’t many attractive alternatives for him if the 2004 Olympic gold medalist remains at 168 pounds. Ward (26-0, 14 KOs) also has dismantled WBC light heavyweight title-holder Chad Dawson (31-2, 17 KOs, 2 NC), who decisively defeated Hopkins in their rematch nearly April 28 in Atlantic City, but Hopkins’ victory over Cloud has made him a more viable foe for Ward.
If Hopkins cannot be lured into fighting him, Ward understands he is in a predicament, despite his status as one of the three top pound-for-pound boxers in the world.
“I’m at a stage right now where I can’t allow myself to be penalized for beating the top guys in the 168-pound division,” Ward said. “I keep hearing people say there’s nobody to fight. That’s my team’s job, to find somebody for me to fight. I shouldn’t have to go up to [175 pounds] to get a viable opponent. Now if that’s the case, so be it. But right
now, I’m a super middleweight.”
Ward wants to become a pay-per-view headliner, but he won’t be able to make that transition without an established opponent.
“There’s some up-and-coming guys, but again, I’ve got to do myself right,” Ward said. “What I mean is, I’m trying to go to the next level. We fought [on] premium-network television. We’ve done that.

capturing an Olympic Bronze Medal in the heavyweight

BT: About a week or so before the fight was officially announced, you said you still hadn't officially decided who you would fight next. At one point, you even mentioned on Twitter that Devon Alexander was the frontrunner to land the fight. What made you finally decide on Guerrero?
FM: Just look at the scenario. The position I'm in now, I got here somehow, some way. I didn't just wake up and become pound-for-pound the number one fighter in the world. I didn't put myself there. I didn't write, "Floyd Mayweather, #1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world." I didn't do that. This is something I didn't do. All I did was beat whoever they put in front of me. I wasn't picking and choosing, but once again, it's about working smarter. Listen, I worked hard already early on in my career. Now, it's about being smart, so now I'm at a point to where I hold all the cards. I'm not picking and choosing. Guerrero is my mandatory. I'm the WBC champion, so he's my mandatory. Guerrero has a great story, you know, from what I heard. As far as the things dealing with his wife [cancer]. Now that's a blessing from God. What him and his wife and his family have been through, and for him to keep going strong, I mean, he has a great story, man. I'm happy that he's able to bounce back from what he's been through, but, you know, I'm just like anybody else. When I get up, I say my prayers. When I go to sleep at night, I get on my knees and say my prayers. I just pray to God that when I'm in the ring, make sure me and my opponent both be able to live to fight another day. FM: Man, listen, I mean, like I said before, saying prayers is not a bad thing, you know what I'm saying? Believing in God is not a bad thing at all, but they get to a point where these fighters be feeling like God got certain sides and things like that. That's not true. We're all equal under God's eyes. Like I said before, these fighters be killing me with all this S.O.G., man. I don't really know Andre Ward. I don't have anything negative or bad to say about Andre Ward. Nothing against him, and like I said before, anybody has a right to call themselves whatever name they want to call themselves. He calls himself S.O.G. If I'm not mistaken, that stands for Son of God. Last time I checked, we're all God's children. When one fighter is facing another fighter, God don't choose sides. What's going to happen in life is going to happen. Everything is already planned out. Listen man, if you're going to be a pastor, go to church. If you're going to be a reverend, go to church. FM: I mean, it's okay. If I remember correctly, I sold out an arena in the Bay Area maybe 12 or 13 years ago. Listen, I don't know how many people exactly live in Oakland, but I love the fans in Oakland. Not knocking Andre Ward, but he can't sell tickets nowhere. He can't sell tickets in Las Vegas. This is the only guy I know that's a gold medalist, but don't nobody know he's a gold medalist. He's a gold medalist, but he's making money like he don't even got a medal. Like I said before, Andre Ward, he's a good fighter, but who knows him? If you're not in Oakland, you don't even know who he is. He's getting older and time is ticking, so I mean, when is he going to ever leave Oakland and put assess in seats somewhere else? There's a difference when you say "Andre Ward". The only people that know him are in the boxing world. Floyd Mayweather is a worldwide celebrity; a worldwide mogul. You know, you got fighters, sometimes, they speak on certain situations where the thing is this, like I always tell you before, when you're a fighter getting a million dollars, a million dollar fighter like Andre Ward, if anything, you need to come to my camp so you can learn the blueprint on how to sell out arenas worldwide. Looks like Hopkins may have to fight Karo Murat next. He's the IBF's mandatory challenger who's been waiting for his shot at the title for some time, even received step aside money a couple times, and Hopkins new this going into the Cloud fight. Undefeated boxer Gary Russell Jr. has declined advances by rapper/promoter 50 Cent to join his SMS promotional boxing team.
Russell has this to say about his interactions with 50 Cent:
“Over the last few days, we’ve been getting a number of phone calls from 50 Cent. They want us to sign with their camp.”
“I don’t have anything against his team, but we are not interested. I have a manager, Al Haymon, and he is the only person I’m signed with.”
50 Cent has signed Yuriorkis Gamboa, Billy Dibs, Andre Dirrell, Luis Olivares, and Donte Strayhorn. The roster lacks the star power and high profile names that 50 cent was hoping for but it is only a year old and 50 Cent is showing how aggressive he is in expanding his team.
Russell Jr. seems extremely happy with his manager Al Haymon and benefits greatly from their relationship with Golden Boy Promotions. We should still keep an eye on 50 cent and the direction he takes SMS Promotions in the near future.
