The A's have two years to decide whether to buy approximately five acres of downtown land for $7MM. First, however, MLB would have to approve a move from Oakland to San Jose.

The A's quietly moved forward in their quest for a new stadium in San Jose this week, as the San Jose City Council agreed to give the team a land-purchase option.

The resolution, decided by a 10-1 vote on Tuesday, extends to the A's exclusive rights to buy nearly five acres of downtown land near the San Jose Sharks' HP Pavilion for $6.9 million that are only to be utilized to build a ballpark.

The two-year option will cost the A's $50,000, with a possible third-year extension going for $25,000. It is within that time period the team can purchase the land, which won't happen until official word comes from Major League Baseball regarding the team's relocation request. Even then, the sale of the land for a ballpark must go to a public vote.

The A's have not commented on the arrangement with San Jose.

Commissioner Bud Selig's blue-ribbon panel has been at work analyzing the A's stadium options for nearly three years with no public recommendation. Though no recommendation has been made, general manager Billy Beane has said that he expects word "soon."

It's possible, though, that attention won't be on the A's situation until work on the sale of the Dodgers is completed. The issue potentially could be raised at January's owners' meetings.

Thats some dirt cheap land. Thats cuz they know they want the fuckin team there. San Jose is HUGE, and so is the bay area. Yes im not gonna go to as many games but i would pay big bucks to see them in a small, new stadium that fit their style. They need some life, they're not a minor league team and they shouldnt be treated as such. Fuck Bud Selig for not dealing with it.


Even worse is the A's offseason issues...Beane doesn't want to sign anyone until the stadium issue is addressed

In a public gesture it hopes will reverberate with Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, the San Jose City Council on Tuesday agreed to give the Oakland A's exclusive rights to buy almost 5 acres of downtown land for $6.9 million -- but only if the team agrees to build a ballpark on the site.

The 10 to 1 vote, with only City Councilman Pierluigi Oliverio opposed, granted the A's a two-year option for $50,000 that could be extended for a third year for $25,000.

City Councilman Sam Liccardo amended the motion to ensure that if the A's ultimately exercise their option, the sale of the land for a ballpark must go to a public vote.

But the A's are not expected to buy the land until they receive word from Selig about their request to relocate the team near San Jose's Diridon Station.

"Opportunities to get a Major League Baseball team don't come to a city very often,'' Mayor Chuck Reed told the council. "But this is not necessarily just about baseball. I pose the question: What's in it for San Jose?''

Reed then ticked off a list of benefits the estimated $500 million ballpark, privately financed by the A's, would bring to the city: about $1.5 million in annual revenue to the city's general fund; $1.7 million to San Jose's struggling redevelopment agency and affordable housing; and a few million to Santa Clara County, the water district and schools. Reed also touted the almost 1,000 permanent jobs that would be created by a ballpark.

I wonder what happens after 2012, since Selig said he was going to leave office for good after his term expires, with the ballpark situation. The super-slow pace of his "Blue Ribbon task force" that he keeps defending probably isnt going to have a decision by then, have to wonder how likely the next commissioner will be to come to a decision or leave it up to the task force still. Either way its impossible for the A's to make any progress without a decision.

The Athletics have been stuck in a bit of a holding pattern this offseason due to their stadium situation, but they may be drawing closer to a resolution. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that Bud Selig plans to meet with Giants executives within two weeks in an effort to accelerate a decision about whether the A's will be allowed to relocate to San Jose.

The Giants draw a significant portion of their fan base and corporate sponsorships from counties south of San Francisco, and they are adamantly opposed to relinquishing their territorial rights to the South Bay. A source tells Rosenthal that the Giants must draw at least 3.2MM fans to break even on their $130MM payroll next season after drawing 3.4MM fans this season. They can't afford much of a slip.

If the Giants refuse to yield their territorial rights, Rosenthal says one solution would be for MLB to purchase the Athletics, secure a stadium deal in Oakland, then resell the club. It would be similar to what they did with the Expos in 2002. The A's have agreed to expand the seating capacity (32K) of the proposed Cisco Field design as one condition of the move. Essentially, Selig has to balance the best interest of the Giants with the best interests of the game

Marlins Express Interest In Gio Gonzalez

The Marlins have expressed interest in left-hander Gio Gonzalez, according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro. The Marlins are willing to part with Major League players and top prospects to upgrade their rotation, but they aren't convinced the Athletics would deal Gonzalez.

Gonzalez is available, according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com, but the A’s aren’t motivated to move him. They’d like to obtain cheap, young hitters in trades this offseason, according to Knobler (Twitter links). David Villavicencio reported earlier today that the sides are discussing a deal and that Gonzalez is hoping to sign an extension if he's traded. Frisaro reported last week that the Marlins covet Gonzalez and James Shields, suggesting that Miami will likely trade for one starter and sign another.

Gonzalez, 26, posted a 3.12 ERA with 8.8 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 in 202 innings in 2011. He led the American League in walks and made his first All-Star team. MLBTR projects that Gonzalez will earn approximately $4.2MM through arbitration in 2012, but he's a super two player, so he won't become a free agent until after the 2015 season

4:43pm: The Mariners have inquired on Bailey, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney (on Twitter). Olney suggests the A's will definitely move the reliever this offseason.

12:48pm: The A's are very willing to trade Bailey, tweets Danny Knobler of CBS Sports. He notes that the Phillies had interest before they signed Jonathan Papelbon.

11:19am: A Reds source agrees that Alonso is way too much for Bailey, writes MLB.com's Mark Sheldon. Sheldon notes that starting pitching is a more pressing need for the Reds than a closer.

9:00am: The Reds are talking about a possible deal for Athletics closer Andrew Bailey, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney. The A's are interested in Yonder Alonso, tweets Jim Bowden of MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM and ESPN.com. The Reds have a need at the back end of their bullpen, with Francisco Cordero entertaining offers as a free agent. The Blue Jays are also known to have Bailey on the radar.

Bailey, 27, posted a 3.24 ERA, 8.9 K/9, 2.6 BB/9, 0.6 HR/9, and 37.1% groundball rate in 41 2/3 innings this year. He missed time with an oblique injury in 2010, and also had elbow surgery in September of that year. Effects of the procedure caused him to miss most of the first two months of the 2011 campaign.

Bailey is under team control through 2014, and we project him for a reasonable $3.5MM in 2012 as he'll be arbitration eligible for the first time.

A’s Wanted Morrison Or Stanton; Marlins Said No

The Marlins have pursued trades and free agents aggressively so far this offseason. Most recently, Gio Gonzalez has emerged as a possible trade target for the team. Here are the details on the Marlins’ offseason, via Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald:
•The A’s have demanded a package containing Logan Morrison or Mike Stanton for Gonzalez and the Marlins “flatly rejected” the possibility.
•C.J. Wilson will visit the Marlins after Thanksgiving. The free agent left-hander met with the Angels last night and has more visits scheduled.

•A’s GM Billy Beane accompanied owner Lew Wolff to meet commissioner Bud Selig and discuss the team’s stadium situation earlier in the month, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
•The A's lost money for the first time this century, Beane told Slusser. Though they obtain tens of millions in revenue sharing each season, the A's are expected to lose several million dollars in 2011.

lol, you Giants fans sure are sensitive when it comes to San Jose. Last i heard the A's now have the right to get a new stadium there although i personally wouldn't like it myself, way to far for me to go to a game

it has nothing to do with being a Giants fan.. its just the East Bay has been the A's home for a while.. and the East Bay is big, why come to the side where theres already a team? good ol battle of the bay, with a bridge in between.. not no Freeway Series like in LA. Plus San Jose Atheletics sounds wack or San Jose Atheletics of Oakland? WACK!

I like how its all spread right now.. Giants in SF, Earthquakes and Sharks in SJ, A's in Oakland, Warriors and Raiders too.. shit i'm all for another team in another city that has no teams.
