49ers agreed to terms with S Madieu Williams on a one-year contract.
Last we heard, the Niners were battling the Raiders for FS Dashon Goldson. It's not clear if the Williams signing is a hedge against Goldson leaving or merely for depth. Williams' effectiveness has waned since a 2008 neck injury, and he has just one interception in his last 29 starts.

49ers TE Nate Byham will undergo surgery to repair a torn ACL suffered in a recent practice.
He'll placed on injured reserve, ending his season. A 2010 sixth-rounder, Byham caught five passes for 27 yards in 14 games last season. He was ticketed for a special teams role before the injury. Colin Cloherty and Konrad Reuland will compete for the third tight end job.

He only missed Thursday through Sunday. The 49ers didn't practice Monday, but Gore will hit the field Tuesday as well as speak to the media. He's expected to be fully recovered from last season's hip fracture. The injury is not a long-term concern, and Gore is ranked ninth among running backs in PPR leagues per the Rotoworld Draft Guide. He'll be the centerpiece of Jim Harbaugh's offense, especially with top wideout Michael Crabtree out indefinitely.
