Cesar Gracie open to Nick Diaz vs. "Mayhem" on Jan. 29, catchweight required

If trainer Cesar Gracie gets his way, Strikeforce welterweight champion and prized pupil Nick Diaz (23-7 MMA, 4-0 SF) finally will meet Jason "Mayhem" Miller (24-7 MMA, 1-1 SF) in early 2011.

The goal is for the fight to take place at a currently unannounced Jan. 29 Strikeforce event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

But as Gracie told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) on Monday, the champ won't move up a weight class to get the fight booked.

"I was talking to Strikeforce a little bit about it today," said Gracie, a finalist for "Trainer of the Year" in the 2010 World MMA Awards. "No opponent has been named or anything. But he's going to fight on that date, and hopefully Fedor (Emelianenko) will be part of it too. It could be a really exciting time."

What would make it even more exciting is Diaz vs. Miller. But Gracie said it's still a work in progress.

"That fight just hasn't been offered to us like in an official manner yet," he said. "I know 'Mayhem' goes on his websites and (says) Nick is ducking him and everything.

"It's kind of hard to duck someone when you haven't even been offered the fight. It's just 'Mayhem' talking about that. Until it's been offered, you can't say yes or no."

Gracie said he hadn't talked to Diaz about the fight but will in the next fight days. Besides, it hasn't even really been offered.

But Gracie said if it's a fight Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker wants, they'll take it. But it won't be in Miller's middleweight division.

"If that fight was offered, yeah, we'd probably take that fight," he said. "We'd just have to look at what weight class it's going to be in, and apparently, 'Mayhem' can't make 170. We're not going to accommodate going to 185. It doesn't really make that much sense to call someone out, and the champ has to ... go to your weight class."

Instead, Gracie prefers the fight to take place right in the middle – at 178 pounds, which is within a few pounds of where Diaz previously met Frank Shamrock and Scott Smith in Strikeforce catchweight bouts.

Currently, Diaz is training for marathons and keeping the weight off. And besides, though he's receptive to the bout, Gracie said Miller hasn't accomplished much in his recent bouts and really is in a win-win situation regardless of the outcome of a fight with Diaz, who's riding an eight-fight win streak.

"Being the champ of 'Bully Beatdown' doesn't really make you a contender," said Gracie, referring to Miller's MTV reality show. "It doesn't. If he were beating people that's important, yeah. But the champ doesn't need to move or down in weight because someone says, 'Don't be scared, homie.'"

The Diaz and Miller feud reached a boiling point back in April at the now-infamous "Strikeforce: Nashville" event. After teammate Jake Shields defeated Dan Henderson in the headliner, Miller, who picked up a win earlier in the night, entered the cage to demand a rematch with the then-middleweight champ.

The confrontation didn't go over well with Shields and his teammates, including Diaz, who soon were part of a wild in-cage melee that marred the CBS-televised event.

Diaz and Miller both have barked about a possible fight since then.

PAUL KELLY VS SAM STOUT TARGETED FOR UFC 126

A lightweight contest between hard hitting Canadian fighter Sam “Hands Of Stone” Stout (16-6-1 MMA, 5-5 UFC) and scrappy British figher Paul Kelly (11-3 MMA, 5-3 MMA) is being targeted for UFC 126 Feb. 5, 2011 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Sam Stout fights out of Canada and is known for his technical striking game and heavy hands; he last fought and defeated Paul Taylor by split decision at UFC 121 in October.
Prior to that he won three Fight of the Night awards for his wins over Matt Wiman at UFC 97, Joe lauzon at UFC 108 and a loss to Jeremy Stephens at UFC 113.

Paul Kelly is a British fighter who started training at the popular Wolfs Lair MMA Academy before moving to Team Kaobon which also is home to other British UFC fighters. Kelly last fought and defeated T.J. O’Brien by TKO (Elbows) at UFC 123, Nov. 20, 2010. VALENTIJN OVEREEM INJURED, OFF STRIKEFORCE EVENT

Valentijn Overeem (28-25 MMA) has suffered a undisclosed injury and was forced to withdraw from his Strikeforce Debut against top ten fighter Antonio “Big Foot” Silva (14-2 MMA) which was scheduled to take place Dec. 4 2010 at Strikeforce: Henderson vs Babalu in St. Louis. mmaweekly.com first broke the news.

Valentijn is the brother of Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem and has competed for a handful of different organizations like Pride Fighting Championships, K1 and Sengoku to name a few and holds victories over notable fighters such as Randy Couture, Ross Pointen and Renato “Babalu” Sobral.

Valentijin is currently riding a two fight win streak, both victories came by form of knockout in the first round over Tengiz Tedoradze (24-10-1 MMA) and Catalin Zmarandescu (5-2 MMA) earlier this year.

This is the third blow the Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu II card has received recently as it was reported that former NFL star and recent MMA import Herschel Walker had to pull out of his scheduled fight with Scott Carson with a deep cut and Jesse Finney also pulled out of his fight due to an eye injury which will require surgery.
Strikeforce: Henderson VS. Babalu II airs live on Showtime Dec. 4 2010 and features a light heavyweight rematch between Dan Henderson and Renato “Babalu” Sobral. Additionally Robbie Lawler takes on Matt “The Law” Lindland in a middleweight contest and hard hitting welterweights Paul Daley and Scott Smith square off.

With stalemate on Diaz vs. Miller, manager now wants Diaz vs. Daley in StrikeforceDon't tell Cesar Gracie that Nick Diaz is scared, homie.

Well, unless you're Jason "Mayhem" Miller (24-7 MMA, 1-1 SF), who's dedicated a website to the phrase, which is a Diaz (23-7 MMA, 4-0 SF) quip that he's borrowed to express frustration at a stalemate that's arisen in booking a grudge match between them for a Jan. 29 event in San Jose, Calif.

Diaz vs. Miller is a fight Strikeforce seriously has considered since October when the two nearly came to blows backstage at "Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons 2." (The rivalry was sparked six months prior when Miller and Diaz brawled on national television at 'Strikeforce: Nashville.')

But getting the camps to agree on terms has been a weighty issue.

Miller, a middleweight, wants to meet at 183 pounds and claims Diaz has already fought at that weight and even expressed interest in fighting at light heavyweight.

Gracie points out that Diaz, the Strikeforce welterweight champion, hasn't fought above a 180-pound catchweight fight he took against former UFC champion Frank Shamrock in April 2009.

"'Mayhem' is now saying he'll only cut down to 183," Gracie told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "Well, with a one-pound allowance, that's 184. He weighed in at 184 for the Jake Shields fight (at 'Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers'). So he's saying he won't cut anything."

Gracie said the heaviest Diaz will fight Miller at is 179 pounds, a mark that could expand to 180 pounds with a one-pound allowance granted to non-title fights.

Miller said it doesn't matter whether he gives a number or not – Diaz won't fight him.

Gracie on Sunday issued an announcement that Miller "opted out" of a proposed meeting in January at a catchweight of 178 pounds.

Miller scoffed at the claim and said he couldn't make that weight.

"It's ridiculous," he said. "Especially not in that timeframe. I would have to go do some homosexual triathlons to get to that weight. I'm not Lance Armstrong."

With a line apparently drawn in the sand, Gracie now said he wants Diaz to defend his title against Paul Daley (26-9-2 MMA, 1-0 SF), who this past Saturday delivered a blistering knockout of Scott Smith at "Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu II" and afterward surprised Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker by calling out K.J. Noons.

"I would take that fight right now for January," Gracie said of Diaz vs. Daley.

Coker said he'd like to revisit Diaz vs. Miller with both sides, but the fight promoter admitted there is only so much he can do.

"I'm not sure if we're going to be able to bridge the gap," he said. "We're going to have more conversations, but at the end of the day, if they don't want to make it happen for whatever reason, it's not going to happen. At some point, we're just going to move on."

As to a bout between Diaz and Daley, Coker likes the idea.

"After Paul's performance, it puts him right in the thick of things," he said. "Daley's name was brought up. I think that would be an amazing fight myself because styles make fights, and those two styles would be explosive. But in saying that, I would like to fully explore the 'Mayhem' situation before we commit to what we're going to do."

For Gracie, it's not an issue of whether Diaz has the desire to fight above his normal weight but what incentive he has to do so.

"Of course he would if it's a belt or fighting someone very significant," Gracie said. "Anderson Silva, for example. If somehow the stars aligned and Nick was offered that fight, Nick would take that fight at 185. But for him to fight at a weight class he's never fought at before against 'Mayhem' Miller – no disrespect to Miller, I think he's a great fighter – unfortunately he doesn't hold any ranking in the MMA community. There's no winning out of it.

"When people are getting paid, it's the fight business, not just fighting. In the fight business, if you call someone out, that means you better be able to move to their weight class or at least meet in the middle. He's refusing to meet in the middle."

Miller, meanwhile, believes there's a golden opportunity to capitalize on their grudge. Forget the weight - that's enough incentive.

"Maybe Nick isn't that bright, but Cesar Gracie seems to be very intelligent," he said. "He wants to protect his fighter. Nick is saying he's not scared, homie. So let's do the fight."

Kid Yamamoto In Talks With UFC

In its three-plus years under the umbrella of Zuffa LLC, the WEC aggressively has recruited talent from overseas, particularly among the ranks of Japanese fighters who've traditionally dominated the rankings in lighter weight classes.

They've been partially successful in doing so, nabbing competitors such as Takeya Mizugaki, Yoshiro Maeda and Akitoshi Tamura, among others.

One of the biggest prizes, Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto, seemed to elude their grasp even as posterboy Urijah Faber continued to call out the then-dominant fighter early in his featherweight title reign.

But with a merger already in motion between the WEC and UFC, those doors have opened again, and Yamamoto (18-3) is in active talks with the UFC, sources close to the organization confirmed with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

If signed, his debut could come as soon as February or March.

During a conference call Tuesday in support of the WEC's final event, WEC 53, MMAjunkie.com asked WEC General Manager Reed Harris whether the merger could set the stage for a new influx of Japanese talent.

"I know that we are actively working on that as we speak," Harris said.

Harris declined to mention any names who are under consideration.

UFC president Dana White, meanwhile, often has expressed interest in bringing Yamamoto aboard, though he hasn't addressed the possibility since the merger became a reality.

"I've been a 'Kid' Yamamoto fan for a long time," White said following UFC 94. "I'd love to get him over here.

"There's two fights left on [Yamamoto's] K-1 contract, and he told me his dream is to end his career over here with us. So I'd like to see it happen."

White's comments came just days after he was seen palling around with Yamamoto on a video blog in support of the January 2009 pay-per-view event. The appearance sparked intense speculation that the Japanese fighter could be Zuffa-bound, though nothing came of the meeting.

Yamamoto was due in May to make his U.S. debut in a fight against Federico Lopez at "Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery." But he subsequently was pulled off the card at the request of DREAM officials and instead fought Lopez at DREAM.14, where he delivered a first-round knockout. The win snapped a two-fight skid that included decision losses to Joe Warren (in the quarterfinals of the 2009 DREAM featherweight grand prix) and Masanori Kanehara (at DREAM "Dynamite!! 2009").

Once the top-ranked featherweight in the world, Yamamoto considered a run for the 2008 Olympic games in freestyle wrestling but was forced to abandon that goal by a serious elbow injury.

K-1/DREAM Dynamite!! 2010 Card Finally Taking Shape

You can’t stop rock’n'roll, and you cant stop JMMA either.

Even though they may be on the verge of death, lets hope that FEG plan on going down swinging. The Dynamite card has looked disastrous, with only one fight booked less than a month prior to the card. Now, the filler is being arranged around the FW title fight, and fingers crossed, it will be another memorable end of year card and a solid addition to what is actually my favourite event in all of fightsports.

K-1/Dream Dynamite 2010

Last year saw the anticipation of a Dream vs Sengoku head to head theme, at least on the Mixed Martial Arts side of the card. Aoki vs Hirota in particular drew much speculation, as some pondered whether or not the mercurial Dream champ had FINALLY met his kryptonite at lightweight, a powerful boxer-wrestler. While it was not to be, as Aoki promptly snapped Hirota’s arm in a copper-lock (it would be Aoki’s next fight against Gilbert Melendez that finally saw the JMMA juggernaut toppled), the anticipation for the card was fever pitch, despite Overeem and Mousasi booked in what were ostensibly “squash matches”… which proved to be the case.

This year, due to their obvious financial perils, the affair and build up seems a tad more subdued. But now, FINALLY, there seems to be some momentum and focus.

Surpassing what appeared to be main-event in Bibiano vs Takaya II – a rematch of the FW Grand Prix final, with the belt at stake – is the reported Welterweight title matchup, as returning Grand Prix winner Marius Zaromskis makes his first divisional defence of the title against former MW, LHW and Open Weight legend Kazushi Sakuraba, who drops down to welterweight for the first time, after a career that includes victories over UFC open weight, heavyweight and light heavyweight champions alike.

Zaromskis is on a two-fight skid, but always dangerous. Sakuraba is more removed from his prime than Hugh Heffner. But regardless, the Gracie Hunter is one of the most entertaining and talented fighters in the history of recorded fightsports, so it is not unfeasible that he could defeat the wounded Zaromskis; a man whose primary skill is striking anyway. A vintage Saku submission? It would take a hardcore Whitemare fan to not wish to see the triumphant goodbye of a legend of the game like Saku (WAR WHITEMARE -rj), who outside of his skills is truly one of the gutsiest bastards to ever step in a ring.

As I called on IronForgesIron over a month ago Tatsuya Kawajiri will face fellow top 10 ranked Strikeforce lightweight and former champion Josh Thomson, who is fresh from defeating former K-1 Hero’s LW champ JZ Cavalcante.

The annual minor K-1 tourney has been cancelled (delayed), but with the reported participation of JLB in an MMA rules bout (as ever – some things never change) and of course the usual suspects; no, not Todd Hackney, McManus, Fenster, Verbal Kint and Dean Keaton, but Alistair Overeem, Melvin Manhoef and Gegard Mousasi…. then perhaps, let us dare to DREAM that this Dynamite card – heavily rumoured to be the last FEG event before financial collapse – can live up to expectations and end the year 2010 on the best note posssible.

Banzai, JMMA fans. Dare to DREAM.

UFC Signs Top 10 Featherweight Michihiro Omigawa

Michihiro Omigawa (12-8-1 MMA, 0-2 UFC) is returning to the UFC. This time as a featherweight.

After resurrecting his career in his native Japan and emerging as one of the 145-pound division's top-ranked fighters, he's signed with the UFC and expected to fight Chad Mendes (9-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) in early 2011.

Versus.com first reported the signing, which MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has confirmed with a source close to the negotiations.

No specific date or event has been determined for the fight.

After just eight fights a meager 4-4 record, Omigawa signed with the UFC in 2007 and suffered decision losses to fellow lightweights Matt Wiman and Thiago Tavares. His stint barely registered as a blip on most fans' radar, and the judo specialist returned to Japan and continued to struggle.

But once signing with World Victory Road's Sengoku promotion and eventually DREAM, the 34-year-old found new life. He's now won eight of his past nine fights. The lone loss came in the finale of Sengoku's 2009 featherweight grand prix, where he suffered a split-decision defeat to Masanori Kanehara. But he's rebounded with recent wins over the likes of Hatsu Hioki, Hiroyuki Takaya and Micah Miller.

Mendes, meanwhile, heads to the UFC following the WEC's merger with its sister promotion. A two-time Division I national wrestling runner-up and Team Alpha Male fighter, Mendes is undefeated since his pro MMA debut in 2008. In the WEC, he's earned decision wins over Erik Koch, Cub Swanson and Javier Vazquez and a submission victory over Anthony Morrison.

Marlon Sandro (17-1 MMA) vs. Hatsu Hioki (22-4-2 MMA) featherweight championship bout has been added to World Victory Road’s year-end show “Sengoku: Soul of Fight.”
mmajunkie.com first reported the news.

Sandro, a top five featherweight, will be looking to defend his belt for the first time since a vicious 38-second KO victory over Masanori Kanehara at World Victory Road Presents: Sengoku Raiden Championships 13.

Sandro, a heavy handed striker, has defeated everyone he has faced in 18 fights except one; that lone loss came to Michihiro Omigawa at Sengoku 9 in a very close “must decision” since that loss he has won three straight fights all by knock out.

Hatsu Hioki is a top ten ranked featherweight riding a 10-1 run that includes seven stoppages. His lone loss in that run came at the hands of Michihiro Omigawa at World Victory Road Presents: Sengoku 11 by a close split decision.

Since his loss to Omigawa, he defeated Takeshi Inoue by split decision at Shooto: Like a Tiger, Like a Dragon 3 to win the lightweight championship and most recently he dominated Jeff Lawson and submitted him by triangle in the first round at World Victory Road Presents: Sengoku Raiden Championships 14.

SAKARA VS. FALCAO AT UFC ON VERUS 3

A middleweight fight between Alessio Sakara (15-7 MMA, 6-4 UFC) and Maiquel Falcao (26-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC) is expected to take place on the upcoming UFC on Versus 3 card, mmajunkie.com first reported the match up.

Sakara has not fought since a March victory of James Irvin by TKO because his last two scheduled fights against Jorge Rivera have fell through. First Rivera suffered a broken arm in training and the second fight was scrapped when Sakara got really sick the day of the fight.

Sakara a heavy handed fighter rides a three-fight win streak into this matchup with victories over Joe Vedepo by head kick, Thales Leites by split decision and a TKO victory over James Irvin.

Falcao made his UFC debut against Gerald Harris at UFC 123 and scored a unanimous decision over Harris but took criticism for playing it safe in the third round after dominating Harris early on. Falcao is riding a eight-fight win streak that includes seven stoppages.

UFC on versus 3 is rumored to take place March 3 at a city and venue to be determined.
