War of Words Between Frank Shamrock and Dana White Continues

http://www.mmafighting.com/2010/10/25/war-of-words-between-frank-shamrock-and-dana-white-continues/

Cain Velasquez and Brock Lesnar teamed up to give UFC 121 a huge box office boost at UFC 121 this past Saturday, but it wasn't the only war that earned headlines around the MMA world.

It may be a feud that will never lead to an in-ring conclusion, but the ongoing verbal fireworks between UFC president Dana White and MMA legend Frank Shamrock has continued on. Just days prior to UFC 121, White had some choice words for Shamrock, and now Shamrock has fired back.

The two have not gotten along for years, but the most recent flare-up began during a recent edition of MMA Fighting's The MMA Hour, during which Shamrock laid some of the blame for the sport not being sanctioned in New York on White.

Shamrock explained that with White's brashness and a speaking style heavy on expletives, that perhaps he was not the best representative for the sport despite being its most famous.

"The face of our sport is Dana White and out here in conservative New York, the way people think, bald-headed, tattooed, swearing people are just not a good representative of our brand, and unfortunately people think that Dana White speaks for MMA, and they're confused," Shamrock said then. "They don't know he speaks for the UFC. They think he speaks for the entire sport and [they think] the entire sport is made up of Dana Whites."
We parted with nothing more than a clear understanding of our different views and brands. -- Frank Shamrock

At UFC 121, MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani gave White a chance to respond, and he did so, calling Shamrock an "irrelevant jackass," "two-faced" and a liar. White also divulged that Shamrock recently flew to Las Vegas to meet with him.

"What have you done for mixed martial arts in the last 10 years?" White said. "What have you done? You haven't done anything. You're just a liar and a guy that's trying to keep himself relevant."

In an e-mail sent to MMA Fighting, Shamrock rebutted White's criticisms and reaffirmed his belief that White is a bad frontman for the expanding MMA movement.

"Wow and false, is all that I can say about Dana's comments that I am a two-faced liar and further, what a bully and terrible example of combat sports meets corporate America," Shamrock wrote.

Shamrock explained that he visited White essentially to make peace.

"We parted with nothing more than a clear understanding of our different views and brands," said Shamrock, who recently retired and is in the process of moving to New York with plans to help lobby for MMA sanctioning.

"Dana's recent comments on AOL are ridiculous and insulting and I am sad to see them associated with our sport," he continued. "We will never be a true sport, or art for that matter, until we are free to speak our hearts and minds. I was being genuinely honest about my beliefs and dreams and did not attack, insult, curse or become angry with him in any way. And yet in return, I was attacked, ridiculed and bullied, and finally, my character questioned publically."

Shamrock went on to say that White is an example of the bullying epidemic that is a current topic of national attention.

"My comments in reply to Mr. White's insulting tirade is that mixed martial arts breeds confidence, builds character and creates strong diverse communities whose foundation is honor, respect and discipline, and Dana White, I refuse to be bullied by you, and further, I respect a man who truthfully stands up and fights for his family with honor," he wrote.

"Anytime you want to become a real man and not a bully, you let me know," he continued. "I would [be] happy to oblige you with [a] personal introduction to Shamrock MMA."

Former title challenger Patrick Cote confirms UFC release

Former title challenger, "The Ultimate Fighter 4" runner-up and veteran middleweight Patrick Cote is a free agent.

Following a loss to Tom Lawlor this past weekend at UFC 121, the Canadian today confirmed via Twitter his UFC release.

"I had a little hope but (I) finally got the release word from the UFC," wrote Cote, who suffered a unanimous-decision loss at the Oct. 23 event in California. "It's been [an] awesome experience. I'll be back."

The defeat to Lawlor was Cote's third straight under the UFC banner. He suffered a title loss to champion Anderson Silva at UFC 90, and after sitting out more than a year and a half to heal from a knee injury suffered in the fight, Alan Belcher submitted him at UFC 113 earlier this year.

Then came the loss to Lawlor.

Prior to the recent three-fight skid, Cote, who first debuted with the UFC more than six years ago at UFC 50, posted seven wins in an eight-fight span. Included was a four-fight win streak (three of which came in the UFC) that earned him the title shot with Silva.

Cote, a veteran of the once-popular TKO organization in Canada, was in his fourth stint in the UFC. It took him five tries to earn his first UFC win while he remained undefeated outside the world's top promotion.

The 30-year-old currently owns a 13-7 record, which includes a 4-7 mark in the UFC.

New UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo defends title at UFC 125

World Extreme Cagefighting's final featherweight champion, Jose Aldo (18-1 MMA, 8-0 WEC) will make his UFC debut on Jan. 1.

UFC president Dana White today announced that Aldo – who by virtue of the pending UFC and WEC merger is now the UFC's first featherweight champ – will defend his title against a yet to be named opponent at UFC 125.

Featuring a lightweight title fight between current UFC champion Frankie Edgar and top contender Gray Maynard, UFC 125 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The main card airs live on pay-per-view.

White says Aldo's opponent has yet to be determined, but he believes the Brazilian featherweight could use the new stage to become an MMA superstar.

"This kid could be a huge star," White said. "[WEC fighters] are finally on the biggest stage in the world now."

Potential opponents for Aldo include Canadian veteran Mark Hominick (19-8 MMA, 3-2 WEC), who recently picked up his third consecutive WEC win with a split-decision victory over Leonard Garcia at WEC 51, as well as Josh Grispi (14-1 MMA, 4-0 WEC), who takes a 10-fight win streak and perfect 4-0 WEC record into next month's WEC 52 meeting with Erik Koch (10-1 MMA, 2-1 WEC).

Former heavyweight contender Gabriel Gonzaga cut by UFC following loss

Gabriel Gonzaga (11-6 MMA, 7-5 UFC) is the latest one-time UFC contender to enter the free agency waters.

The heavyweight today announced via Twitter that the UFC has released him from his contract following a decision loss to Brendan Schaub at this past Saturday's UFC 121 event.

"Back to normal life and [Brazilian jiu-jitsu] forever," Gonzaga wrote today.

The 31-year-old Gonzaga was 3-4 inside the octagon since he vied for the heavyweight title against then-champion Randy Couture at UFC 74. Couture won the fight via third-round TKO.

Gonzaga suffered a badly broken nose in the first round of the August 2007 fight, though he managed to fracture Couture's left arm with a high kick.

That same weapon netted the Brazilian one of the most shocking highlights in UFC history when he took on Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic at UFC 70 and knocked the former PRIDE champion out cold with a kick in the first round. The win set up his title bid.

Gonzaga struggled to stay consistent following his meeting with Couture. Fabricio Werdum stopped him by second-round TKO at UFC 80, and though he racked up back-to-back wins over Justin McCully and Josh Hendricks, he was knocked out by Shane Carwin at UFC 96.

After rebounding again with a TKO of Chris Tuchscherer at UFC 102, he had a chance to stop the rise of now-contender Junior Dos Santos at UFC on Versus 2 in March. Instead, he found himself the victim of a first-round knockout.

Although he took Schaub the distance in this past Saturday's UFC 121, which took place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., he was frequently outclassed on his feet and eventually outpointed on all judges' scorecards.

damn, that sucks for him. he lost to couture (former HW champ & legend in the sport), carwin (title contender), werdum (beat fedor in less than 2 minutes of the 1st round), & dos santos (title contender) ..it could happen to anybody, really. he didnt impress me against schaub @ all though..

but he'll always have an important place in mma history as the man who led to mirko's downfall.

why hasn't tito been kicked out yet? its been 4 fuckin years since he's had his hand raised at the end of a fight lol
Dana probably thinks there's a few more dollars to be milked out of him. There's probably still a few people that want to see tito get his ass wooped some more. I say put him on the undercard for his next fight to add a little more humiliation before cutting him.
