Well, the name of the show IS Eastbound and DOWN.
Do you think he just snorts coke, smokes weed, and drinks like a fish because he is HAPPY? LOL...cmon man, the show is about a superstar that CRASHED. He was a fuckin middle school gym teacher last year for HAD's sake. The show is built ENTIRELY on depression. Without it, there would be no show and it wouldn't be nearly as good.
I like him better as a delusional gym teacher who snorts coke and fucks hookers because he doesn't give a fuck and it's funny.
Not a fallen superstar who does coke and fucks hookers because he is depressed and needs love.
Just my opinion though.
I have the same problem with Entourage. I tune in to see funny shit, fucking bitches, doing drugs, not any of that Vince locked up a by a pornstar spiraling into depression bullshit.
Life is full of enough BS, I don't need to re-watch it in ALL my entertainment.
I cant tell if you are being facetious or not, but whats the point of watching a show with NO development? This show is progressing at a very steady pace, and not for the worst. They developed Kenny LAST season as well. Not sure what the complaint is.
Because I feel like the character development is forced into the show and doesn't come naturally. Like the writers sit around and pow-wow about how they can create a more artistic and deeper show. Lord of the Flies bullshit.
HBO seems to have this problem with a lot of their popular shows. I mentioned Entourage above, but I have the same problem with Sopranos too. Shit was great until they tried to get too deep with Tony's character development. All that dream shit.
I just wanted to see him kill people, not figure out what sociological and psychological factors were contributing to his impulses and whether Tony was in fact just an analogy for a little bit of the characteristics we all share. I read psych books for that.
Seinfeld had great character development that came naturally to the show for example. We didn't have weird depressing George dream episodes where we got unnecessary insight into his traumatic childhood. That shit came naturally through comical interactions with his parents.
