A Big Hole in Team Mayweather's "No Negotiations" Claim

By Rick Reeno

Regardless of who you believe, there will be no fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao on November 13. For the last few weeks, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum and Team Pacquiao, told the entire boxing world they were negotiating a deal to fight Mayweather on November 13. A few weeks back, Arum told media members that an agreement was reached in principle, and the fight proposal was sent to Mayweather for his approval.

Mayweather was given a deadline of July 16 to accept, or reject, the proposal. The deadline passed last Friday without an answer from Mayweather or any member of his team. Once the deadline had passed, Arum scheduled a late night conference call with the press.

During the conference call, Arum disclosed that HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg was personally handling the negotiations between Top Rank and Mayweather's manager Al Haymon. Arum personally had never spoken to Haymon or any member of Team Mayweather.

This past weekend, Mayweather took part in a charity basketball event hosted in Miami by Dwyane Wade and Alonzo Mourning. When Mayweather was approached with questions pertaining to the Pacquiao negotiations, he issued a brief statement to the Associated Press. At no point did Mayweather deny the existence of the negotiations.

"I'm not interested in rushing to do anything," Mayweather said. "I'm not really thinking about boxing right now. I'm just relaxing. I fought about 60 days ago, so I'm just enjoying myself, enjoying life, enjoying my family and enjoying my vacation."

On Monday, Leonard Ellerbe, who is Mayweather's adviser, issued a statement to BoxingScene.com denying the existence of the Pacquiao negotiations. According to Ellerbe, there were never any negotiations taking place between Top Rank and Haymon, and there was never an agreement reached in principle for a November fight.

"Here are the facts. Al Haymon, Richard Schaefer and myself speak to each other on a regular basis and the truth is no negotiations have ever taken place nor was there ever a deal agreed upon by Team Mayweather or Floyd Mayweather to fight Manny Pacquiao on November 13. Either Ross Greenburg or Bob Arum is not telling the truth, but history tells us who is lying," Ellerbe said.

I'm not saying Ellerbe is lying or Arum is lying, I'm just presenting the facts as I see them. Based on Ellerbe's statement, there are several questions that need to be answered and immediately come to mind.

1.
While Arum and Team Pacquiao were actively discussing the existence of the Mayweather negotiations with the media, on a near daily basis, for the last few weeks - why did it take Team Mayweather several weeks to deny the existence of the negotiations?

During the entire "Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiations," Ellerbe and every other member of Mayweather's Team refused to answer any questions related to Pacquiao or the status of the "ongoing" negotiations.

2. Schaefer, the CEO for Golden Boy Promotions, told our very own Lem Satterfield on June 17, that he "really cannot comment" on the status of the Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiations because of a gag order agreement by both sides.

"As you can see, you don't see any quotes from me," said Schaefer. "There's absolutely no comment from my side."

3. On June 6, Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya made a televised appearance on Univision's Republica Deportiva. De La Hoya's statements on the program were translated by Ricardo Lois of The Boxing Truth, and later verfied by several third parties.

During the televised segment, De La Hoya said a "deal was very close" between both sides to make a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. If what Ellerbe says is true, then what in the world was De La Hoya talking about?

"Obviously it has been a difficult negotiation, for many reasons. But now, we are very, very close in finalizing these contracts. Its been complicated but both fighters realize that this fight needs to be made. It has to be made because the fans want this fight and it is the biggest fight in the world, for the boxing world. Its going to be a super big fight. I think we are really, really close in finalizing those contracts. I obviously cannot talk about the negotiations, but we are very close," De La Hoya said.

Let me break it down for the slow people no random drug test no fight. Pac-man didn't agree to it so no fight. Now after Pac-Man's next PPV falls flat at about 500,000 -700,000, then he will agree to the random test. And we will have a fight in May 2011.

apparently you haven't been following closely at all. Pacquiao agreed to random drug tests, he agreed to everything mayweather wanted. And floyd isn't interested in boxing at the moment or pacquiao. His words.

Donaire-Montiel is on for November

WBA super flyweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire will face WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando “Cochulito” Montiel in November in the United States although no site has been decided upon as yet.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum confirmed that Montiel “is fighting Donaire” after Vic Darchinyan who suffered an embarrassing 5th round knockout and lost his IBF/IBO flyweight titles to Donaire on July 7, 2007 challenged Montiel to avenge his brother Alejandro’s ten round defeat by him (Darchinyan) in August 2003 in Australia in an effort to land a lucrative fight.

Montiel was quoted by IBF official Ray Wheatley as saying “Fernando Montiel wants to be recognized as a great Mexican boxer but why won’t he fight me.” Boasting that when he fought Montiel’s brother he “kicked his ass in all of the ten rounds winning every round on points” the cocky Australian bragged that he would “do the same to Fernando Montiel if he has the guts to fight me.”

Arum said “they are all nuts. There are no professionals around. They are all totally crazy” referring to Darchinyan as well as Floyd Mayweather Jr’s adviser Leonard Ellerbe who claimed they had never discussed a megabuck fight between Mayweather and pound-for-pound king and “Fighter of the Decade” Manny Pacquiao.

Arum said the Donaire-Montiel title fight will be held in the US and that they would decide on a venue this week after meeting with the television people from Showtime on Tuesday.

Wheatley also reported that Darchinyan, the WBC/WBA super flyweight champion had stated that Donaire would never give him a rematch, alleging that “Donaire will never fight me. He refused to sign the contract he had for six weeks that would have made the fight happen. I have lost interest in that fight. I am now the IBO bantamweight champion and have focused on Fernando Montiel who is the WBC and WBO champion.”

However, we recall that Darchinyan’s promoter Gary Shaw in an interview with us some time ago had said that he and Arum had agreed on the terms for a Donaire-Darchinyan rematch and that he had been waiting for a response from Darchinyan’s handlers led by Elias Nassar only to tell us later that they wanted more money for the television rights especially since the fight was to be telecast in the Philippines by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN. Eventually the TV rights issue was given as the reason the fight didn’t push through although Donaire said it was Darchinyan’s way out since he was scared to fight him and get whipped the second time around.

Informed of Arum’s statement that the fight against Montiel would happen in November, Donaire said “it will be a helluva fight” and indicated he was “excited, because this is the fight I have been wanting. It’s the best match-up I could ever ask for.”

Donaire conceded that Montiel is “a very strong fighter and a good champion” but that he had “the speed, the height and I think I also have the power. But you never know until you get into that ring.”

Donaire who arrives in Manila on Thursday said he plans on spending one month in the Philippines.

If Floyd doesn't plan on fighting soon then why would there be any negotiations? I believe team Pacman finally agreed to take less than 50 and they also agreed to do the random blood testing. I think Team Pac and Golden Boy were negotiating but I don't believe Team Mayweather was involved, since he's taking a break from boxing.

I want to see some proof that Pac-Man agreed to random drug testing. You won't find any proof because he didn't agree to it. I'm telling you the fight will be made for 2011. Stop worrying about it. After Pac-man low PPV numbers. Nobody is scared other then Arum because his cash cow will be no more after Mayweather puts hands on him.

Maidana: "I Want You Tim Bradley, Now it's Personal!"

By John E. Brignone, notifight.com

It's official, Argentine knockout artist Marcos "El Chino" Maidana will defend his interim world super lightweight title against American challenger DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley on Saturday August 28 at Luna Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The official press conference took place late at night on Tuesday at headquarters of the Association of Dairy Industry Workers of Argentina. Maidana and the promoters of the event, Osvaldo Rivero and Stephen Livera, were present.

“I had thought about fighting at Luna Park for some time. But I am very happy to defend my title on that stage and that I've been given this opportunity," said Maidana to BoxingScene.com/Notifight.com

Maidana told BoxingScene/Notifight that he feels anger and personal resentment against WBO junior welterweight champon Timothy Bradley.

"After this fight, which I think I'm going to win, Bradley will come next in November. I want that fight. When they [former managers] made that fight [against Bradley], I was not aware of it and it didn't happen. Bradley said that I was afraid, that I was a "chicken." So now I want to show him that I'm not afraid. Now it's personal," Maidana said."

"I want to clarify that I am in perfect condition. I've only been away for two months. I never injured my back. I had some problems before, but for the alleged fight with Timothy Bradley I never had a problem. I will train in Cordoba and I will be in perfect condition for August 28."

While a future fight with Bradley is not a dona deal, Maidana saw the recent fight between Bradley and the Argentinean Luis Carlos Abregú and said:

"If he fights me in the same manner that he fought against Abregú, I will a lot of chances to beat him. Abregú perhaps was not aggressive enough, but I'm not going to miss. I'm going to win. I saw that there are ways to beat him and that's good," Maidana said. "I'm going to win by knockout (DeMarcus Corley), then go to Bradley and then unify with Amir Khan."

Tickets for Maidana-Corley will go on sale Monday July 26 with prices ranging from 60 pesos (overall) to 260 (Ringside). They can be purchased at the box office of Luna Park

HBO Won't Back Away From Williams-Martinez Rematch

By Lem Satterfield

HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg is not going to back away from the Paul Williams-Sergio Martinez rematch without a fight. HBO is psuhing to stage the rematch on October 2. Last December, Williams won a close majority decision over Martinez in a "Fight of The Year" contender.

Making the rematch has been tough. Williams (39-2, 27KOs) is planning to move down to welterweight, which is two weight divisions below Martinez (45-2-2, 24KOs), who is the WBC middleweight champion. Martinez is willing to take the rematch, while Williams has other plans at 147-pounds.

"I understand that HBO wants to see Sergio Martinez fight Paul Williams again. It was a great fight and a Fight of the Year candidate, and I can see why that's the fight that they want. It's their prerogative, but you know, you can't force a deal. You've seen that with Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao," said Lou DiBella, promoter of Martinez.

BoxingScene.com posted a statement from Martinez on Monday, where the middleweight champ said he was willing to move down to 154-pounds to fight Alfredo Angulo. DiBella has already received a call from an interested Gary Shaw, who promotes Angulo.

"Sergio has fought some very big fights lately, and I don't want to see him get penalized [for being so good,]" said DiBella. "I've heard from Gary Shaw, today, and he's willing to consider a fight with Sergio against Alfredo. Personally, I think that Martinez against Angulo is a great promotion. A young stud challenging a more established fighter is a definite crowd-pleaser of a fight."

Regardless, HBO won't consider any alternative opponents for Williams or Martinez, until the rematch is a dead issue without any possibility of taking place.

"There has been a lot of speculation and energy [on the part of HBO] put toward the rematch of Williams and Martinez," said Greenburg. "So I think that we're going to stick with that until we hear that it can't be made and then move on from there. So really, it's premature to start talking about Martinez-Angulo

Arum Responds To "Bizarre" Team Mayweather Claim

By Lem Satterfield

Last Friday, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum held a late night conference call with the press to discuss the details behind the ongoing negotiations to make a November fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. According to Arum, the negotiations had been ongoing for the past two months, with HBO President of Sports, Ross Greenburg, acting as the intermediary between himself and Mayweather's manager, Al Haymon.

On Monday, Mayweather's adviser, Leonard Ellerbe, issued a statement denying the existence of the negotiations and said "either Ross Greenburg or Bob Arum is not telling the truth but history tells us who is lying."

Initially, Arum thought Ellerbe's statement was a joke. Arum doesn't know the reasoning behind Ellerbe's statement. Greenburg called Arum on Monday to throw water on the fire before it got out of control between the two sides. Arum doesn't plan to lose his head - because he feels the Mayweather camp has gone crazy.

"This is Alice In Wonderland Time. This is preposterous. It's almost like dealing with people who have lost their minds. It's totally bizarre. I mean, how do you answer to something like that? Well, Richard Schaefer has said for seven weeks that there was a gag order in place when he was asked about the negotiations," Arum said. "If there are no negotiations, then why or how is there a gag order and where did it come from?"

"What Ross [Greenburg] told me is that he said, 'take it easy.' He said, 'don't go crazy. Take it easy,' and 'we're still trying to make the fight.' That's what he said to me, word, for word. I guess that he thought like I would go off at this kind of stupid thing."

Boxing fans want Pacquiao to fight Bradley, but instead we get Margarito or Cotto

By Chris Williams: Ever since WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (26-0, 11 KO’s) moved up in weight to easily defeat knockout artist and top welterweight contender Luis Carlos Abregu (29-1, 23 KO’s) last weekend, boxing fans have been asking why Manny Pacquiao won’t fight Bradley instead of who he will end up fighting Antonio Margarito or Miguel Cotto.

Bradley, 26, has been fighting on both Showtime and HBO, has built up quite a following among hardcore boxing fans. He still needs that one big fight to get him over the hurdle and make him a mega star in the mode of Floyd Mayweather Jr, and Pacquiao.

However, if Bradley is going to get there, and he surely will, it won’t be by fighting Pacquiao. Just last week, Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum said “No free rides,” meaning he’s not going to help out another non-Top Rank fighter make a name for himself by matching him against his biggest star Pacquiao.

However, I don’t know how Arum is going to avoid matching Pacquiao up with a non-Top Rank fighter sooner later, unless Pacquiao decides to hang up his gloves after he fights his next two fights against Top Rank fighters Cotto and Margarito. Arum wants to match Pacquiao against Mayweather, who isn’t a Top Rank fighter, but because of the huge money that fight will generate it won’t really matter. Arum will do really well regardless.

However, it’s too bad that Arum won’t match Pacquiao against Bradley while he waits on Mayweather to start showing some interest in a fight against Pacquiao. Bradley would make for exciting fight because he’s faster than both Margarito and Cotto, and would be able to move around the ring and hit and run against Pacquiao.

Perhaps for that very reason, Bradley might not get the shot against Pacquiao, because he would have a very real shot at beating the Filipino star. You can’t say the same thing about Margarito and Cotto. Few people think either of them have a chance. Besides the fact that Cotto and Margarito have no chance at beating Pacquiao, they’re not appealing fights that boxing fans want to see right now.

Cotto already got his chance in the Pacquiao lottery, and lost badly in a boring one-sided fight last November. Arum is pushing the rematch with a different angle, pointing out that Cotto is now trained by Emanuel Steward, and has the WBA junior middleweight title in his possession. Pacquiao will then be able to shoot for an 8th world title. This is something that only the most diehard of Pacquiao fans would even care about.

Mayweather Sr. – “Arum don’t call no f*cking shots”

By Eric Thomas: Floyd Mayweather Sr. was in his usual tell I like it is mood on East Side Boxing’s On the Ropes Boxing Radio program recently, giving his thoughts about why his son Floyd Mayweather Jr. didn’t elect to agree to a contract to fight World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather Sr. had this to say about it: “Bob Arum don’t call no f*cking shots. The fight can be made anytime they want the fight to be made. Little Floyd definitely ain’t scared of no Pacquiao. That’s the last thing in the world that little Floyd is scare of, a little Filipino midget.”

The Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiations went nowhere recently after Mayweather came out and said he’s not interested in fighting right now. He didn’t say that there was anything in the contract proposal from Top Rank promoter Bob Arum that he didn’t like. He just doesn’t want to fight right now. Arum plans on restarting the negotiations early next year in May. Before then, Arum is going to match Pacquiao up with either Miguel Cotto or Antonio Margarito in November.

Its unknown where that fight will take place because if it’s Margarito, it can’t happen in the United States because he doesn’t have a boxing license. More than likely it will wind up in Mexico where Margarito lives.

Mayweather Sr. thinks there was never an agreement for Mayweather Jr. to fight Pacquiao. Mayweather Sr. says “My son don’t want to be paid like Pacquiao. He’s [Mayweather] the big draw, not Pacquiao. He drew more numbers than Pacquiao, and he wants to get paid like he’s supposed to be, not no 50-50. He wants to get paid like he’s supposed to get paid and I don’t blame him. I would be the same way. Pacquiao claims he wants half, but it don’t go that way. He’s not the best fighter, anyway. He knows he ain’t the best fighter, and Bob Arum knows he ain’t the best fighter, too. So why should you belittle yourself and take less money than you’re supposed to?”

Mayweather Sr. does have a good point. If you’re considered the best fighter by boxing fans and most writers, and you make the bigger money on pay per view, why would you want to agree to a 50-50 deal with a fighter that makes less than you on PPV, and who has already been beaten three times and had two draws? You can’t blame Pacquiao and Arum for trying to get the same money as Mayweather, because this is, after all, negotiations. But it doesn’t look as if it’s going to work out the way they’ve been doing it.

Arum and Pacquiao had their chance at a 50-50 deal in January, and instead of taking the sweet offer, Pacquiao wouldn’t agree to the random blood testing 14 days before the fight. Pacquiao wanted no testing 24 days before the fight. That effectively spoiled the deal. Pacquiao then went on and beat the little known Joshua Clottey by a dull 12 round unanimous decision on March 13th at the Cowboy Stadium. In the meantime, Mayweather went on to get huge PPV numbers in a win over Shane Mosley on May 1st.

Mayweather Sr. thinks that Pacquiao should agree to the full random blood testing before he fights Mayweather. “There shouldn’t even be a fourteen day ting. It should be a random thing”

Mayweather Sr. isn’t exactly impressed with the idea that Pacquiao could wind up facing Miguel Cotto again, who Pacquiao easily beat last year in November in a 12th round knockout win. Mayweather Sr. says “Bob Arum is giving Cotto a title and then turning around and letting Pacman beat Cotto up again and take it again. That’s all it is.”

Cotto had to beat Yuri Foreman, another one of Arum’s fighters, in order to capture the WBA junior middleweight title. Pacquiao wants a chance at winning an 8th world title, and he could wind up going after Cotto, if only for the title. Other than that, there’s really no reason for Pacquiao to fight Cotto again.

LOL, that's probably why Floyd ain't taking the fight, they feel that Arum is calling the shots, ordering gag orders (then not following them) and then giving deadlines. And since they didn't negotiate in the media who knows what the terms of the contract were. Maybe Arum was still asking for a 50/50 split and that for sure would turn Mayweather away. Or maybe they're still asking for a cutoff date in regards to the drug testing. We don't know for sure but with the way Floyd Sr. is talking makes me wonder.

This is so bizzare. This is from Jeff Mayweather today. Again, I gotta side with Bob Arum on this when he said, "they are all crazy!"

"My Life is in Jeopardy...

This story began as a boxing story but now it has become something totally different. It is now about a real life situation, and I am hereby alerting the entire boxing world and the world in general, that should anything happen to me, I want you to know who did it before it happens.

A situation arose that involved someone very dear to me. I won't say that person's name but of course the police has been alerted and they do know the person's identity. This story has taken a turn in a dangerous direction, and my involvement as I tried to assist this person has put my life in jeopardy.

I have received text messages warning me that I am out of my league for being involved in this situation. The person I believe to be responsible for these threats is Bill Haney, owner of the newly opened Hit Factory. I want everyone in the world to know that if something happens to me, or to the person I can't mention in this article, it will have happened at the hands of Bill Haney himself or one of the many employees who are a part of his crew, all of which can be found working inside the Hit Factory.

I don't fear any man; it is not out of fear that I'm writing this piece. I'm doing it because should anything happen to me or the person who has to remain nameless for now, everyone who has read my story will know exactly who to look for.

Bill has a very charming approach; however, he is also extremely ruthless if he can't control you. I was hired by Bill Haney to be one of the faces of The Hit Factory. I soon found out that the environment at the Hit Factory made it difficult to feel comfortable because so much more than boxing was taking place. With all of Haney's guys working in the gym, the environment was completely controlled, which made most people uncomfortable. I felt it in my heart that something bad was going to happen in this place, and it did.

I can't disclose what actually happened, as this matter is under police investigation at the present time. Bill always said he wanted to be famous in the boxing world, well, now he is and I want all eyes to be on him. Something suddenly happens to Jeff Mayweather, look no further, you have already been told by me."

Floyd Sr really isn't in any position to talk since he's not invovled in negotiations or anything like that.

Further, if this fight wasn't happening because of drug testing, or money, why not say it? Why instead say, "I'm on vacation I'm not even thinking about boxing or pacquiao right now" ???

I think you had it right before when you said Floyd just doesn't want to fight right now, for whatever reasons.
