Coach Mike Singletary suggested Thursday that the 49ers could target a running back in this year's draft.
"We can't count on Gore forever," said Singletary, adding that lightening his workhorse's load could help extend his career. The Niners are believed to be interested in a change-of-pace/returner as a complement, such as Clemson's C.J. Spiller or Ole Miss' Dexter McCluster.
Coach Mike Singletary stated unequivocally Thursday that Alex Smith is the 49ers' starting quarterback heading into the 2010 season.
Singletary hedged on Smith as the starter in his season-ending press conference in early January. Shaun Hill and Nate Davis won't pressure Smith, so the Niners would only change quarterbacks if an upgrade was acquired in trade.
