Coach Mike Singletary suggested Thursday that the 49ers could target a running back in this year's draft.
"We can't count on Gore forever," said Singletary, adding that lightening his workhorse's load could help extend his career. The Niners are believed to be interested in a change-of-pace/returner as a complement, such as Clemson's C.J. Spiller or Ole Miss' Dexter McCluster.

Coach Mike Singletary stated unequivocally Thursday that Alex Smith is the 49ers' starting quarterback heading into the 2010 season.
Singletary hedged on Smith as the starter in his season-ending press conference in early January. Shaun Hill and Nate Davis won't pressure Smith, so the Niners would only change quarterbacks if an upgrade was acquired in trade.

if we do get sproles it frees up 1 of those first round picks

but spiller is a bigger and faster player who could turn into the featured back, sproles is obviously not a main back but still a threat.

pretty much we need 1 of these guys, sproles or spiller, they both have their ups and downs.

if we sign sproles, we can use that pick on secondary/d-line/or even a qb

there are a bunch of quality de-line guys in this draft, i'd like to get 1 since aubrayo and justin smith are getting older. and we need help there anyways.

whatever we do, i just want quality picks that wont bust.

i like spiller and know he will be a factor in the NFL.

8mill seems like a lot for someone like sproles, and thats why i think someone will overpay him. it could turn into more money if other teams are interested, teams like the redskins/raiders who dont give a shit about money.

Question: Why Sproles and not Spiller?

First, Sproles is a free agent; Spiller is not. Second, Spiller would require a first-round draft pick; Sproles would not. Third, if you're going to take a RB at No. 13, he better be an every-down back; the 49ers already have their every-down back. Lastly, even if the 49ers were willing to spend a first-round pick on a return specialist, there is no guarantee they'd get him in the draft. Then what? The 49ers would have an opportunity to erase a need before the draft even rolls around. --Matt M.

very well said from Matt Maiocco except for his third point is questionable about the every down back thing.
1. spiller could be an every down back
2. gore usually gets hurt every year, even if its only for 3-4 games

^^^^yea true, but we can use him to help gore and he is a solid punt returner..we can use are picks on o-line or d-line..spiller is hard tho i like him but wut if hes a bust? sproles we already knw wut he can do in the pro's.plus we in the nfc he was in the afc, also he is in his prime like gore there both gonna be 27 this yr.. i say get a solid ot like trent williams of oklahoma, s tayler mays of usc if hes still there or DE...

YEA I KNOW GORE GETS HURT BUT WE STILL GOT COFFEE.. if gore is out 4 weeks or 3 we still got are passing game sproles/coffee for the a mean time wont be that bad..thats why we need o-line to open up holes and pass protect we get that, are rb's wont have no trouble getting yards and td's..

nfc/afc doesnt matter, this isnt baseball.

spiller wont be a bust but the benefit to sproles is being sure to getting him, someone might take spiller before 13.

taylor mays isnt that good, he will drop to late first round at best. at this point i like earl thomas better from texas. berry and haden are the best 2 safeties tho that we wont have a chance at.

we need to def grab o-line, and either a backer/de-line/secondary if we get sproles first.

for now, we will have to wait for the combine results and then march 4th when free agency starts.

then we can have a better idea of where things stand.

i agree with that, and coffee/sproles would still be solid if gore goes down. but if we dont get sproles, we still need a return man and we still need someone to spell gore/coffee anyways. which is where spiller fits in.

i see spiller emerging as a maurice jones drew type of back, maybe faster tho.

i like his potential and unique combination of speed/strength.

we need these combine results to get a better idea of everything.

i also agree we need o-line help, but to me there will be more busts of o-line guys in the first round than any other position. mock drafts have all kinds of guys going all kinds of places, there are nearly 10 different o line guys picked all over the place. from the raiders number 8 to the colts number 30.

we also need to see what happens with all of free agency, sims was a great signing last year and we might be able to score another solid vet.

idk but afc is a better conference as i remember the chargers swept the hole nfc east one of the better divisions in the nfc..im not saying it was all sproles but he was part of it..plus this guys short and fast hides behind the o-line very hard to tackle..if we get him or not i hope we get great players not a balmer....tayler mays has hands thomas is a tackle machine, tayler mays had a PICK today at the senior bowl...thomas is just a micheal lewis younger version..a player we need to replace already...

^^^ "Some agents and NFL folks" reportedly believe that free agent Darren Sproles could command $5 million a year.
Just hours after predicting the 49ers would pursue Sproles, beat reporter Matt Maiocco no longer thinks they're in the mix. $5 million annually is a lot to pay a returner/third-down back who can't pass block or help in short yardage. San Francisco couldn't offer Sproles enough of an offensive role.

49ers beat writer Matt Maiocco guesses that San Francisco has Gerald McCoy rated No. 1 on its 2010 draft board.
McCoy would play five technique in the Niners' 3-4 system. Maiocco thinks Ndamukong Suh, Russell Okung, Joe Haden, and Eric Berry could round out the team's top five. San Francisco sits at Nos. 13 and 17 in the first round.
